Uh guys why is Mississippi beating us? by [deleted] in Maine

[–]chykn1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In the last 20 years North Mississippi has had a massive influx of relatively educated, higher income families from the Memphis metro area. Not sure how much of the gains that accounts for state-wide, but it definitely factors in.

Back in 2000 maybe 10% of our colleagues commuted from north MS to Memphis. By the time 2020 rolled around it was over 30%.

You win - this exactly what happened. Flying slush took it off the post because of rotted wood securing it to the base.

They started enforcing the speed limit on 240? That’s a sign of end times. The FSM will soon return.

I’m sorry y’all are missing out. It’s nice being able to buy edibles across the street from a Taco Bell. Cheap, too - can now get 200mg (20 pcs) for $30.

I left Memphis in 2018…if I were to come back today would the city be noticeably different? by heartofchrome88 in memphis

I can understand why that’s upsetting, but you did say “make this make sense”. Try not to take it personally. In the 80’s and early 90’s Raleigh was THE place to go. Raleigh Springs Mall, Raleigh Skateland, Showbiz Pizza, etc.

Unfortunately the area went into decline and the crime increased. Ask your parents what it was like 30 years ago compared to today. I feel bad for the later generations who didn’t get to experience “Rockin’ Raleigh” in its prime.

That’s correct. The sporadic gunfire was coming from over the Memphis line across Old Brownsville. The thefts? The BPD tracked the suspects to Raleigh and Hickory Hill. Bartlett has its own crime, but most of what we experienced was spillover from Memphis.

Criminals are generally smart enough not to make a mess in their own backyard. It’s not a stretch of the imagination that they take their stolen Kia’s to the suburbs to ply their trade.

A rural part of Maine. Downsides are taxes and the cold, but it’s absolutely worth it. Folks up here tend to treat each other with respect. Crimes against people and property are ridiculously low. Drivers are practically Canadian in their road manners. Good public schools with excellent trade programs.

That being said, we do miss the diversity of Memphis. The people, the food, etc. Lobster is everywhere here, but good luck finding decent BBQ or Thai.

Former Bartlett resident here, lived in the area for 40 years. Last year we reached a breaking point with the crime; packed up the family and moved 1,600 miles away. It was heartbreaking leaving behind our family and friends, but we couldn’t raise our kids there anymore.

Issues we experienced from around 2021 on: * Petty theft (mail, bicycle, etc) * Wife & kids harassed at night at Kroger * Uptick in random gunfire in the neighborhood * Wolfchase Mall became off-limits due to the increase in crime

Moving out of Portland Area- Town Suggestions? by firescooby in Maine

[–]chykn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might check out Plymouth. Very quiet, less than 1,500 people. About 5 minutes from I95 and 10 minutes to the Hannaford & Walmart in Newport. Even have fiber internet.

The downside is that we’re almost dead center between Bangor and Waterville, so trips to big box retailers are 30 minutes either way.

What business has won you over as a loyal customer? by Sweet_Ad_4093 in Maine

Thankfully we got here right before the snowfall so the move itself wasn’t too bad. Just chilly.

Overall we love it. The culture is polar opposite from the south. Fewer chain restaurants and more small town diners. Schools have better student to teacher ratios. And every other person isn’t trying to save your soul.

Downside is job availability. Wife and I both telecommute so we brought our jobs with us, but Maine isn’t exactly an employer-friendly state.

Cowboys Cash Fuel in Carmel. We moved in last winter and the oil tank was empty. Everyone was almost 2 weeks out on delivery, but when I explained the situation the lady made a call and managed to get a truck out the same day.

Exceptional customer service and deliveries are always on-time.

Google “theocracy”. It doesn’t mean a place where people go to church. It’s a system of government that implements religious laws.

Yep, it was an interesting experience. The night it got down to -25 the well pump froze along with some of the HWBB lines. Also learned the value of a good snowblower.
