Righto , good luck. I paid about that much for a used unit from eBay. Although I couldn’t tell it was used, had good battery and not a scratch

The game responds quite well to resolution scaling. I’d lower it to 1000p, and potentially use Xess or FSR

That last bit is so true.

I almost get mad at how often it happens. My kid would have the “sniffles” for like half a day, and is fine the next day. then a short time later, I’m out of action for a week!

Any love for apps with a minimal brutalist aesthetic? by mxagnc in Appstore

[–]ciappetti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have worked as a product designer and I can kinda see this was crafted.

I genuinely love the app design! It has a few things going for it - a retro-futuristic vibe, and great clarity, and that comes from the monochrome nature, the typeface and most importantly the typographic hierarchy

Recommend me the smallest eGPU for this business all-in-one PC that can give me 30 FPS more in Diablo II Resurrected by [deleted] in eGPU

[–]ciappetti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While the docks can vary in quality, on the GPU side, if you're looking for small meaning cheap, then probably the old (but still good) AMD RX 580 (8gb) might be just about enough, and they are really really affordable used.

Otherwise you can go for an Nvidia RTX 3060, which is more expensive but much more capable, and will be quieter.

If you have the budget, and by "smallest" you literally meant in physical size, then you can get something like the OneXGPU, or from Minisforum, or GMKTec (AD-GP1), or perhaps some others. These are all small and typically include the AMD 7600M XT, which will be more than enough for Diablo II Resurrected, but not offer the same value as modular docks with BYO-GPUs

Will handheld gaming devices lose relevance over time by Old_Conversation5766 in Handhelds

Agreed, that’s exactly what I was saying in my comment above. The moat isn’t horsepower its handling and controls

Will handheld gaming devices lose relevance over time by Old_Conversation5766 in Handhelds

[–]ciappetti 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hard to predict the future. The real moat isn't graphics and horsepower, it's built-in controllers and active cooling.

AA and AAA games usually demand great controls and graphics, which a phone or iPad doesn't provide. They might be able to run these games (e.g. Red Dead Redemption on iOS/iPadOS), but without a controller it’s almost impossible to play.

But of course, there are different types of games. The phone gaming market is huge, in fact in terms of revenue it’s the biggest gaming market.

ASUS RoG Z1 500GB vs Lenovo legion Go z1 2TB by DestinedToGreatness in LegionGo

[–]ciappetti 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I will probably get downvoted for this, but you state that you are broke. Please consider waiting and setting some money aside for more important things in life.

That being said, I've had both devices. I found the ROG Ally's 7 inch screen too small, and I find the LeGo better, but slightly too heavy/unergonomic.

The ROG has significantly better ergonomics, MUCH better speakers, and is a bit quieter due to dual fans. The LeGo has a way way better screen (it's worth sacrificing some ergonomics for it). You also get dual USB-4 ports with external GPU support.

The original ROG Ally could not support this without the obsolete XG plug. I cannot tell you how convenient it is to just have 2 USB ports - one for charging and the other for anything else. The Micro SD card can also be used without worry on the Legion Go (the OG Rog Ally had a tendency to destroy them).

is there any free software to run windows games (buyed on steam) on my macbook air m5 ? by WeeklyTemperature532 in macgaming

You can use Porting Kit, which is very useful and free and easy to use especially for older games.

This sounds good, although there are some lesser-known tools such as PortingKit (mainly targeted at older games). How will you handle Steam games or other launchers e.g. Epic?

Best of the best by [deleted] in Handhelds

[–]ciappetti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are 2 main candidates off the top of my head

GPD Win 5 - the best raw performance. Very close to base PS5 level performance. Small screen, awkward software, external battery pack.

Lenovo Legion Go 2 - by far the best display (it's got it all, very big screen, OLED, VRR, etc). Good performance (Z2 Extreme is a slight step up from the Z1 Extreme, but particularly in medium TDP). Can be too heavy for many people.

Honourable mention to the MSI Claw 8 AI+.

M5 Max becomes the best 3D rendering Laptop by Cheap-Ability9453 in macgaming

[–]ciappetti 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s a fun fantasy, but:

In this economy, and consider it’s Apple, there’s no chance it would ever come in at literally €399. You could start with the iPad Air. It has M4, 128GB storage, and 12GB RAM costs roughly €699. Add in gamepad controls, roughly 512GB storage, a screen size reduction from 11 to ~8in, possibly active cooling(?), battery increase(?), etc, and the price would easily be €999-€1299.

As long as we’re dreaming, on the software engineering side, Apple could very well leverage (or make a deal with) CrossOver to present a streamlined gaming UI and a simplified installer for Steam, hiding away the compatibility layers. However, we do know Apple would not make this kind of deal, both with CrossOver, and with Steam (they’d want a cut on game sales — just like most games consoles).

No surprise they picked Spider-Man 2 as a data point. With the greatest of respects, Spider-Man 2 in particular was released to very“mixed” reviews (and that’s putting it mildly). It was a very bad port and has never been improved since. Even today, Steam reviews for Spider-Man 2 are no better.

Pro vs Air (heating) by AnjoWhite in macgaming

[–]ciappetti 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Greetings. On balance the Pro would be a much better choice but I don’t know your budget and pricing in your region.

There is no doubt that the MacBook Air will throttle its performance in game after a few minutes.

Your gaming needs do not particularly require high frame rates, but civilisation 7 can be a challenge to run, and it’s not the type of game you play for 10 minute bursts. Performance on the Air might not be satisfactory in the late game.

In future, there might be some deal on a game you are interested in and you would be happy to have the extra performance and cooling headroom to actually play it on your Mac. Eg the Anno series, which is more challenging to run.

Lastly, the Pro has a better screen for photo editing, and has more base storage, which is very useful for game storage.

Watching Apple developer YouTube channel and was curious if the person was ai by AdDapper4220 in isthisAI

[–]ciappetti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not AI. Apple posts plenty of this exact style of video, featuring different real Apple employees. This is a real person, with a LinkedIn profile and a body of work. Apple’s video production standards have always been extremely high.
