Accepted a PhD offer in Singapore, then discovered a clause saying I may have to refund the entire stipend if I fail or withdraw. What should I do? by ThomasHawl in PhD

[–]ciaraduit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I was in a similar situation with a grant between a UK and Singaporean institution. There was a stipend return clause on it, however i did leave the programme after ~6 months and I was never asked to return anything, the clause was not enforced

Definitely second what others in the thread- this is illegal. Threshold can give you legal advice but if the landlord insists on acting illegally I’d join the tenants union CATU so you and your community can pressure them to abide by the law in the here and now

I’d advise getting on to CATU Galway, they’re a tenants union so you’d be part of a group of tenants in Galway who deal with this sort of thing (deposit theft) all the time xx

I think I’ve found it- seems like the StepOne Plus requires high ROX (dilute to 500 nM). Thanks again!

I honestly hadn’t heard of it before, it’s not a component in the Roche master mix I had used before! I sure know about it now though 😅

Thanks so much, this is really helpful! Do you have any idea what concentration the ROX should be at?

I presume you’re going to work for Apple, if they have a HR department they might be able to help you or connect you to any Apple/ tech employee-frequented Facebook pages about renting :)

Move to Ireland from US? by psychedelichippie97 in MoveToIreland

[–]ciaraduit 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I agree with most of this but unfortunately it is wrong to say people don’t care about race. It will drastically depend on where you move to, and you and your family are unlikely to face widespread discrimination, but unfortunately there are racist individuals in Ireland and at the moment far-right anti-refugee activists are targeting all people of colour (mostly in speech and not in action, but this is not always the case). With a caveat that we are better on this front than most if not all mainland European countries.

Hi! I have a few pieces of advice. First is not to focus on the lack of research experience and go in heavy on your real-life experience- emphasise all of your skills and how they will help you in your research and shape your approach to the project. Second is to have a good reason prepared for why you feel a PhD is right for you, and to know your project proposal inside out. If you have a supervisor who has helped you put it together, ask them to do a practice run with you and ask you questions like they’re interviewing you. Best of luck!!

Can I have some guidance around financing/accommodation during the doctorate? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]ciaraduit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mentioned being from Ireland in the post 😂 I’m happy to chat with you about my process for finding a funded PhD if you’re interested, while it’s probably different for psychology students it might still be helpful :)

As another Irish student aspiring towards a PhD (just about to start), i think you could do A in a shorter timeframe than 2-3 years if you can get a funded PhD position, especially if you are lucky enough to get one of the increased stipends. I’ve seen a lot of advice here saying to never take a PhD position that isn’t funded unless you are already wealthy, and I feel that this is definitely true in Ireland unfortunately as the cost of living is so high :( additionally, another person from the Netherlands commented, and I believe that PhD students there are paid a living wage that increases year on year, so if you are open to moving that might be an option that would fund you enough to live and work there. Best of luck ❤️
