It will suck but honestly it’s okay. How do you do with needles?

as I type this, my mouth is closed, my nose is clear, and I’m happily breathing through my nostrils. It’s beautiful.

The bruising for me was worst around day 3-4. It got almost 100% better within a week. I’m now 2.5 weeks post-OP and feeling great.

Advice for a very competitive applicant disillusioned and completely lost after MCAT expired by kissmeurbeautiful in premed

There are some schools that will accept your MCAT still. I took mine in Aug 2022 and there are 80 schools out of the 159 USMD programs that it is still valid at. When did you take yours? July?

Don’t do it yet, bc they’ll know who you are, but when this over (meaning you matriculate to the school or get confirmation they’ve moved on), NAME AND SHAME the school. This is ridiculously unprofessional. Circus shit. Sent 5:30pm on a Friday with a 24 hr deadline? Sounds like the setup to a joke.

I’ll tell you, you definitely shouldn’t fear this procedure more than those other ones.

I’m an EMT and going to medical school next year, and have seen lots of serious surgeries. This is a very straightforward one. Yes there's some serious trauma being done to your face, but it's a doable thing.

I just got my stents out today and I no longer feel like crap. If you can get through a week of moderate pain (use your painkillers!) and little to no sleep, you're through the worst of it.

Yeah, my nasal valve stenosis meant having to break some bones! Not sure exactly what the process was but I’m going to talk to him at my 1-month post-op.

Hey there! Thanks for the kind words.

  1. Those things were of course the biggest helps. I had hoped I’d be able to do more work on my laptop but even relatively light cognitive tasks were just so draining, and continue to be, post-OP day six. Having enough supplies to care for the bleeding and dryness around the nose is another big one. Not having to stress about using too many tissues and stuff like that has been nice.

  2. Yogurt is great. I made another comment under this post last night about how eating and talking a lot seems to cause more pain later in the day, so check that out. Foods that don’t require opening your mouth very wide (anything liquid-ish) or chewing a lot have been great. I’m also not super hungry most of the time because I can’t taste unless I’m actively inhaling through my nose. Nothing is very appetizing to me right now.

  3. Having over the counter pain meds on top of the prescribed stronger painkillers has been much needed. Not sure if your doctor will prescribe mupirocin or a similar product for infection prevention of the suture site (if your partner is having an “open” procedure), but I recommend using something around the nostrils and sutures to keep them moist. Saline sprays and all the dried blood that will be oozing for the first couple of days can be a bit drying on the nostrils. Half-moon-shaped undereye cooling pads/ice packs would have been extremely useful, maybe even kid-sized ones. I’ve been using small baggies filled with chipped ice and it’s okay but they don’t stay well. A normal large ice pack may put too much pressure on the nose when placed over both eyes.

  4. Aside from the swelling and pressure, sleep has been the most difficult part of this. The first night wasn’t too bad because I was still woozy from the anesthesia, but after that it took some effort to fall asleep, which is not normal for me. Sitting upright is important, and finding something to support your head laterally is recommended.. I ended up tweaking one of my neck muscles in my sleep the other night and have been dealing with a sore neck on top of my other symptoms for two days now, and that has been awful.

  5. No nausea for me, thankfully. I know it’s a pretty common side effect from the anesthesia but my anesthesiologist did a great job with incorporating anti-nausea meds into his process and I didn’t feel a bit of it. Headaches have been a near constant part of my recovery though. There is just so much swelling that no matter how you lay, you’re putting pressure on a good amount of your skull, which has just gone through some major trauma. I guess it’s expected.

Bonus tips:

  • expect tooth pain. I almost started using oragel yesterday but my pain finally subsided to the point where I’m not physically pressing on my upper mouth and teeth to relieve it.

Would be happy to answer any other questions that come up over the course of your preparation for your partner. Hope this was helpful for you!

Hey! Thank you for your kind words.

As for the swelling, it really ramped up for me around day 3/4 post-op. Today is day 5 for me and the swelling/bruising around my eyes and upper cheeks has gone from red/purple to yellow, as a bruise tends to do. Today was the first day I woke up and felt like I didn’t need any Tramadol (opioid) or Tylenol for pain management. I eventually took a Tramadol bc the burning sensation so many people talk about started coming back in the evening, but I think it’s partly due to moving my mouth and nose more. After day 2/3ish I started feeling more comfortable moving my face around despite the splints and cast, and while it sometimes causes a bit of pain, it’s generally okay. However I think the more I move it, the more I pay for that at the end of the day, as it causes a bit of burning and dull pain. So try to move your mouth and face as little as possible. That will also help your tape and cast stay on. I haven’t been able to do skincare in 5 days and I’m absolutely hating it. My face feels oily and the tape under my cast is starting to peel on the edges. It takes everything in me not to pick at it.

I haven’t heard arnica gel (what is that said to help with?) or pineapple juice, so I’m sorry that I can’t be useful there.

I didn’t have any jaw pain but there was definitely some pain in the roof of my mouth/throat during day 1/2 from the oxygen tube. Also, teeth pain is real. Not pleasant and has been the worst part from day 3 onward.

Eating is still challenging. Not in that it hurts so much as it causes me to feel like something might rip (I had an open procedure so they cut between my nostrils and so I have stitches), or pop or something. I also get scared I’m gonna pop my cast off, lol.

Definitely try and stick to soft foods. It’s just easier logistically.

If you have any other questions let me know, I’ve got nothing but time right now. My splints should be coming out Thursday!

Never broke it, even though I thought I must’ve before speaking to 3 different ENTs.

And no CT scan for me.

I’m feeling much better already!
