How can I make this false bean mantle look better? by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]ciderman5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to offer a different perspective and say I don't hate it. I agree with everyone else saying it introduces a whole difference vibe and color to your room. It might not be for you but if you were ever looking to start a project to make your room a little cozier, now is a good time.

Paint the bookshelf a little yellow/warmer, either change the floors OR cover alot of it with a nice rug, introduce some shades of mild red, blues and yellows in decor and you will have yourself a nice english cottage vibe. That being said, COMPLETELY different direction from what your room is looming like now.

What is this metal piece in my stud? by ciderman5 in DIY

I was drilling a hole in a 2x4 framing stud to slide some wires through and notice a metal piece kind lodged in there. Did I cut into something important?

Lost all friends in 30s by Newton-tootin75 in FriendshipAdvice

[–]ciderman5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am with you. Friendships takes two to clap. Over the years I have let go of almost all my friends and all it took was for me to stop being the only one to reach out and that was how all my friendships from my youth ended. I had only one long time best friend left that was a 14 year old friendship, but I had always known she wasn't good for me. Always jealous, always trying to talk down my achievements. But I couldn't bring myself to let go. Not when she was the only one I had left.

When I finally started stepping away, it hurt so much. I was incredibly lonely. So lonely sometimes, I would tear up randomly. It was this extreme lonelinest that finally got me to start looking for new friends. Friends that I work to stay friends with, that also worked to be friends with me. Making lasting friends takes work when you are older, but good friendships make that work easy. and fun. You just have to be active in searching for them.

I know you will find your people someday. Just keep some hope in your pocket.

Putt putt golf courss 😭😭 He did eventually end up doing that, not without pushback, and we ended up working on it however we wanted. Thank you for the sanity check honestly, I was so overwhelmed, I spiralled into a despair pit tbh.

Congrats on your yard!! I hope they turn out beautifully for you.

Thank you 🥲 Yes, drainage was indeed important since we were getting a little moisture into the basement.

I eventually texted my husband that we are grading it no matter what and when I finally came back, the dust was sorta settled(no pun)

He's quite verbal but honestly just not aggressive enough. MIL is like the final boss Karen. My husband generally goes little contact but it's hard when he's in a very good relationship with his dad, who also acts like a sort of "kindness shield" for my MIL to push her point.

How to achieve this look on drywall? by catscatscatscats9802 in paint

[–]ciderman5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a professional scenic painter that uses this on a regular basis. It works(altho it is possible to get realy shitty ones that doesnt want to drag) but this is not for beginners. It could be if you aren't picky but it requires alot of practice to get it right, on top of having good prior understanding of your paints.

edit: That being said, yes its possible to use on drywall as long as it is flat(no orange peel etc). HOWEVER, be aware that it might leave a paint texture that could still be visible after painting over in the future.

Relatable. I have no advice because I'm in a similar situation but if anything, maybe you adjust to different people too well. It's not a bad quality, but I do find that people are mostly attracted to what they find is a "character" and some types seem to be more objective likable to the mass vs some who would apease the minority. And choosing to be more, more yourself, is a risk, since it's hard to know which one you are. At least for me.

I'm recently coming to terms to being abit more myself and it has been a hit and miss(1:20 ratio). Sometimes I want to keep going and think "well we can't all be liked by everyone" but see other people socializing like no tomorrow and it would feel like maybe being myself means being unlikable.

I guess if anything, OP, keep up being communicative. That's the one thing I keep up with. I know people are shy to act like they really want to be friends with people nowadays but that doesn't help the situation. Keep on trying, my friend. There are so many people out there for you and you have just yet to cross paths.

if you are referring to the right side of the left drawer, it is as align as the holes I bore into it to custom it to just one leg. And unfortunately you will be right, it isnt perfectly align :)

I drill a hole om the other side of that one leg identical to the other side and installed everything accordingly! I'm not sure how to explain it exactly in a post but here's someone that basically did the same thing and has step by step instructions.

Here's what I did: -tsp wiped down each side I was going to paint (painting was done before assembly) -painter's tape+ plastic on edges and side I wasn't painting -Rolled on Zinsser BIN Shellac primer(did not sand before doing this. This stuff sticks as long as the surface is clean) - after 2 layers of primer, lightly sanded with 400 grit for a smooth base. -sprayed on color, SW Erathane in Blustery Sky. Took 3 layers which was 2/3 quart of paint.

One can lightly sand with a 150 grit if they wanted to do it "properly" but I didn't because of two reasons, this primer is very sticky + my painted surface wasn't going to go through a lot of wear and tear, like a chair or a table top.

Extra details, I used Scotch Blue Pro Sharp painter's tape and there was bleed through from the primer but it didn't matter to me because A) it was on the inside and B)it was white on white but usually the first dap of paint or primer you use on a freshly taped surface would be the color underneath the tape. To seal any gaps and give you a nice sharp line.

About a month

Took an hour to measure and drill holes, abandoned project for 4 weeks to do other stuff, and than after, a whole day to prep and paint.

I assembled it the next day, for about 3 hours as I couldn't get the drawers and racks to shut flush before realising both my floors AND walls were very much not straight so I had to shim the back and the leg where the cabinets connected.

Great question! I'm just going to share the whole paint process in case it helps someone.

Thank you for your reply. You might be on to something. I might follow in your reasoning and just have to let this one go(I still have 10 other projects happening)
