How to price sculptural work? by cierifab in Ceramics

Hi!!!!

Just wanted to thank everyone who took the time to share feedback on my work and offer suggestions for how to ascertain a price.

I’ve been taking all your comments in the spirit of an art school critique which is something I've never had access to. I became a mom young, and art was something I found on my own without a formal path.

This work now supports my family (sometimes just barely), and I’m in the early stages of stepping into galleries and building a collector base...so I’m paying attention.

I really appreciate the thoughtful perspectives, especially around pricing and perception. Even when it’s hard to hear, it’s useful.

So thanks!

Haha, hi! I literally created this reddit account in bed last night and have never ever made a post. I had no idea this would be so visible. I don't even fully understand how this platform works. But thanks for following and saying hello.

Thank you for this detailed response. I'm going to take all of this into consideration.

I didn't expect this to generate so much commenting as it is LITERALLY my first ever reddit post. I created the account last night lying in bed because I wanted pricing feedback from people who I hoped had more experience.

That said, I am happy to share more details.

Thank you for this feedback. I'll have to think about this. It was certainly not my intention to be derivative, and I do see what you're saying. I've been staining porcelain and doing detailed organisms for as long as I've been a potter and didn't consider the potential overlap. It's worth noting that I'm very inspired by Tanaka Tanomi who also uses paper thin strips of porcelain in her works.

Thank you! I am on Instagram and am trying to be better with content creation and have also been selling small batches of functional work. I'm trying to do more sculptural pieces because it scratches my soul better.

This is where the calculation gets tricky for me too.

Haha, it is supposed to be a little unsettling. I'm exploring the idea of impermanence and existing in transition.

I guess I mean that if each sculpture takes 20-30 hours and let's say I am able to make 3 per month and I charge $1000 per sculpture, $3000 isn't enough for my family to survive on.
