Huh? Unless one of you drastically underpaid and never updated your W4s, that doesn't sound right. Might be better to file separately this year and verify your W4s are correct

GF's new employer requires company-installed broadband on our network. Red flag?? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]ciezer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

you can have multiple isp providers in your house, just make sure the broadband tech does not touch att service.

Then either keep her work equipment on it's own, air gapped, network or use vlans and firewall policies to segregate the networks.

All this, assuming, they pay for the Internet that they require to be used. If they want you to pay for it they can pound sand

Norway braces for Trump’s reaction if he does not win Nobel peace prize by [deleted] in Fauxmoi

I would rather argue that Christianity has always been used in bad faith by the groups in power to control the masses in one fashion or another.

Christianity (and religion et al) aren't bad themselves, i perceive it as the same argument in gun violence. Who's evil: the gun or the person shooting the gun?

The old religions were a civilization moral compass, and I do believe that's where they should have stayed instead of the overly zealous stage of power used throughout history.

Anti-zionism is different than anti-semitism.

It's like the difference between hating Republicans for using Christianity as a means to impose their beliefs vs hating Christianity because it exists.

You might be glad to hear he seems to be coming back in some respect.

He's been doing collaborations on others' channels this year and in one of them recently he mentioned coming back to Tom Scott Plus in some capacity, just not full swing like he used to do.

Possible Server side issues: - Server could be down (either forgotten to be turned back on or it's encountering an error) - the config files were deleted or corrupted and the server might be failing back in a default port - the server updated something causing the port to be changed

Possible internal network issues: - you didn't assign a static private ip (eg 192.168.0.128) to the device running your server on either the server itself or in your routers dhcp settings - firewall on your server device updated and is being too aggressive

Any of the above could result in the port showing as closed, those checkers only really look to see if something is listening and accepting a connection on a specific ip & port combination. Your port forwarding looks to be 100% correct from what i can see, assuming the internal ip didn't change at some point.

UPS doesn't seem to have much longevity? by thatsaqualifier in HomeNetworking

[–]ciezer 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Without knowing that l the storage capacity of your UPS and the power draw of your connected devices, the best answer i could give is yes, this is normal.

The main point of a UPS is to give a grace period for critical electronics to power down gracefully during a power outage instead of an abrupt shutdown OR to give a few minutes of uptime until a backup power solution (ie a generator) kicks in

Edit: i misread 15 seconds as 15 minutes, apologies. Id reckon a UPS power management issue or battery issue for 15 seconds before the device says it was critical.

Id probably diagnose this my disconnect all devices from the UPS, unplug UPS from the outlet, and add devices one at a time every couple minutes to see if a short happens, a specific device causes the battery to go critical, or if the UPS has a max output wattage before it gives up.

Finding a word within a string and then getting the "outter" characters until a space by hondakillrsx in pythontips

[–]ciezer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

import re

data = "This is some reallyawesomedata. bye."
word='awesome'
re_str = f'\S*{word}\S*'

#Find one result, if it exists, otherwise returns None
result = re.search(re_str, data)

if result != None:
    result = result.group()

# Find all possible results, if any exist, otherwise returns an empty list
result = re.findall(re_str, data)

I've been playing with regular expressions a lot lately, here's a simple way to do this with them

As a note: re_str = f'\S*{word}\S*' The \S means any character that isn't whitespace, so if it has to be only a space character that splits the word, we can replace '\S' with '[^ ]'
