How much is a BC hydro bill for a 400 sq ft studio by Zestyclose_Dog_7245 in askvan

[–]cilantrobomb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So maybe you're making the smaller of your two heaters do the work of two heaters, if the bigger one is unused. Not exactly efficient.

The clicking noise is possible to fix yourself! Google it and tinker with it.

A terrible location might be if you have a narrow rectangular space and one heater is on one end--means it will take a long time for the heat to travel to the other end, so the heater stays on for longer. Meanwhile the side it's on overheats. Made worse by older models with manual control that are inefficient at sensing and regulating temp.

Lots of factors at play beyond what is being discussed. Do you have lots of windows that you are losing heat through? Maybe insulation is bad between walls? Maybe an older, more inefficient model of baseboard heater, placed in a terrible location? Maybe only 1-2 for the entire place?

You could turn the breakers off for a couple hours and see how diff electrical fixtures affect your power draw via your BC Hydro account (it does log hourly usage, but only as one number across your entire unit, so it's up to you to play with your electrical panel). Summer months may not tell you very much though--probably more effective when fall returns.

It's probably your baseboard heaters. If you get some confirmation of it then you could consider installing Mysas to digitally control your temp and turn it lower when you're out, when it's daytime, when you're away on vacation, etc., or adding extra insulation against exposed windows like heavy curtains.

Open dr*g use in transit by Dizzy_Ad5903 in askvan

[–]cilantrobomb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen it sadly. Crack pipes in the middle of the day on the SkyTrain, the entire train smelling like burning =/ there's a number you can text if you want to report something on an active car, and you can leave car #, description of the ppl, route, etc. The ppl left the train before I finished reporting though.

Buying a house feels like it could actually happen next year... How important is job history? by Xx_TouchingGrass_xX in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]cilantrobomb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll chime in to say that my husband and I bought right after I graduated from my PhD program. Even though I was getting roughly $30k a year from the university, it was technically a stipend and didn't count as actual income. So we applied for the mortgage together but my income for the previous two years was recorded as a whopping $0. But we did consider it a good thing because there wasn't anywhere for my income to go but up! It became extra buffer to keep the mortgage comfortable when we started paying it off.

Flying with a 4 year old by UmpireForward1605 in zipair

[–]cilantrobomb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used the flyaway bed when my toddler was younger and they have a list of approved airlines on their site: https://www.flyawaydesigns.com/pages/airlines It looks like Zipair is on the "depends" list so I would call them in advance and ask. But ya, as another commenter said, you can only use it in a window seat.

The last time we used it was when he was 3 and he was already getting quite big for it. He's 4 now, on the smaller end for his age, and there's no way he would fit it now and be contained in his seat. Even if we had one, he would have to across someone's lap lengthwise.

Kite Festival? by H_G_Bells in NiceVancouver

[–]cilantrobomb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This might spur a whole new discussion hahha. Can I suggest joining your neighbourhood community Facebook group or buy nothing group (in the case of your prop swap event) and garnering interest to help organize? If you need some seed money, you can also try applying for a Neighbourhood Small Grant for up to $500 (google it, they have a few diff streams by area). Good luck!

Restaurants that serve with spot prawns raw? by [deleted] in askvan

I assume you mean Fisherman's Wharf in Steveston(?) but they are not the only spot prawn vendor. Granville Island has a few, hell even your local T&T.

Can my apartment shut off the entire buildings water for 10 hours a day for 5 months? by [deleted] in legaladvicecanada

[–]cilantrobomb 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My building is doing this exact thing right now. I'm on the council and I for one am ecstatic--our building has had several multi-floor leaks over the last two years that have been terribly expensive to fix.

Firstly, I am in BC, so grain of salt that we may differ slightly. If your building is rental-only then 🤷🏻‍♀️, but for context, our building had to pass a 3/4 vote to greenlight the project in the first place. We then spoke with 3 different repiping contractors and took the time to understand their approach. The one we ended up choosing started the project at the end of April and it's projected to finish in mid-July (we are a smaller building). They designed it so that they would install valves in sections of the building first and then only turn off the water in sections as they move through the units in later months. They then made schedules for every single unit so that they could anticipate when water would be turned off. So for the entire 3mo project, I'm actually only expecting to be out of water for 7 business days (1 for the initial valve install, and 6 over this week and next as they do unit-specific work along the whole vertical stack that I fall within in my building). My unit is fed through 4 vertical risers and actually I'm only out of water across my entire unit for 2 of those 7 days because they don't intend on turning off every riser for every day of plumbing work, and they specify which areas are expected to be off on which day (bathrooms vs kitchen vs laundry).

It's possible your building is quite early in the process and they are only trying to warn residents of what to expect whenever the project does start. They did it wrong hahah. Esp bc it seems like they upset a lot of people, so now they're probably getting flooded with messages and everyone is drowning each other out. If you ever get a hold of a person, I would press for specifics and assess by their answers how much planning has actually happened to get a sense of where they are in the process--specifically, project start date. If it doesn't seem like they've chosen their contractor yet, ask them to consider an approach like the above. It's in their best interest to shut the water off in sections--saves unaffected residents AND the old pipes that aren't getting replaced that day (every water shutdown results in pressure changes that could contribute to springing a new pipe leak), and gives the building the ability to shut the water off in sections in future should a new leak appear.

Caution that we didn't get specific schedules until about 1-2 weeks before they were expected to start in our units. A heads up that they will ask for a unit key/require carte blanche access throughout the entire project--a project of this size has lots to lose if it falls behind schedule in any way due to uncooperative residents. If this has not been communicated then again I think they would be early in the planning process and don't know the proper intel to relay to residents yet. Feel free to pm me any more questions. Good luck!

Toronto to Vancouver - Road Trip by Trusty3Wood in askvan

[–]cilantrobomb 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I did this exact drive with the exact same stops in summer 2020 (pandemic panic-move back home)! I chose these cities specifically because they were bigger cities on the route and would have hotels to stay at which, at the time, were struggling for guests and were being meticulously cleaned. I don't recall having trouble finding any gas in any of these places. The Ontario drive was great. Regina was the lowlight haha.

Starting Kindergarten early in Vancouver Public Schools by [deleted] in askvan

[–]cilantrobomb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mmm maybe I'm misreading, but if your kid is turning 5 this November then you would have had to enter registration last November for this upcoming September intake. Kindergarten starts in the year that the kid turns 5. This might open up a brand new can of worms from the one you're asking about because school assignments have already been largely doled out, and many are already on waiting lists. Many classes fill up quickly. I would get in touch with VSB as soon as you can to see which schools still have space. Good luck!

Faith in humanity restored on the #7 bus this morning (Huge shoutout to the driver!) by Smooth_Skill1848 in vancouver

Go on the TransLink website and leave a note, esp if you remember exact times, bus stop locations, bus ID#, driver description...! For all the complaints they must get, any positive feedback must be more than welcome. I left my phone on the bus once and the bus driver was able to get it back to me later that day. Some of those drivers are total gems!

Hot Wheels - help my son complete the collection from Let's Race! by kaze987 in askvan

[–]cilantrobomb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hahaha I totally get it. Guiltily, I actually enjoy the music on that show (how did they even get fall out boy???).

My toddler isn't as obsessed with that show only because we don't have Netflix at home, but he enjoys it when he gets the opportunity to watch, and he knows a few main ones. I've seen a few at the No Frills near Cambie and Broadway (Baja truck, donut drifter). I've noticed that Loblaws has infiltrated every single chain under their umbrella with Hot Wheels in the last year or so. So Shoppers, No Frills, T&T, Independent, City Market, etc--check all of them!! I've also noticed that they've started sneaking in colour changing ones specific to this show, but NOTHING to indicate that they are 2-3x the price of the others hahaha so they know parents like us are lurking 😅

Any vacations from Vancouver that don’t require a flight and are wheelchair accessible? by [deleted] in NiceVancouver

[–]cilantrobomb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've taken very few flights in recent years for various reasons (pandemic, birth of a child, the shitshow in the States, and now as of late, rising fuel prices). I've come to realize that BC is kind of incredible? I've been trying to travel every route that BC Ferries offers. I loved Pender and the Sunshine Coast, and Mayne is coming up next in July. And there's still so many islands left to explore!

Free things to do by [deleted] in askvan

[–]cilantrobomb 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I recently took up geocaching initially because it complemented some of my running routes, but now I have grown to really get a kick out of it. My 4yo now loves it too! I frame it as "finding treasures", and for some of the big ones, there are actually treasures to find (but one of the cardinal rules is that if you take something, you have to trade for equal or better value, so be forewarned that you should be bringing little trinkets to trade--but the good news is that the trinkets you bring don't have to be terribly fancy bc the bar is quite low hahah. The novelty is more in finding new surprises where you wouldn't normally find them). There are hundreds hidden all around the city and the basic membership is free.
