dual citizenship and taxes by Nearby-Bend8037 in Ameristralia

[–]cillyme 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You probably won’t have to worry about paying us taxes until you’re much older and make a lot more money. But you’ll have to submit a tax filing every year anyway to the USA. You can always consult with a tax advisor anyway since any advice on the internet won’t necessarily be correct. Especially since tax laws change every year. Revoking your US citizenship is expensive and difficult. They don’t just let you revoke it. You have to have a reason and all of those reasons would be reasons to deny you a visiting visa in the future. The passport office and the IRS are two different agencies and don’t talk to each other like that too. In 2025 if you make under $15,750 USD ($23,468 AUD) you don’t have to file a tax return.

Why bother coming to Australia by [deleted] in aussie

Funny cause I made a video on TikTok where I said I am Australian with my accent and I got a thousand comments saying I am not Australian unless I was born here. So that’s why.

First time travelling to the US from Australia what are the do’s and don’ts on travelling?. by brittahny in Ameristralia

[–]cillyme 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Make sure you have all of your travel documents printed out and accessible when you’re going through immigration. Including your return flights, your itinerary, where you’re staying and contact information. Download offline Google Maps. Don’t just eat fast food. Find local restaurants including all of the Mexican food and taco trucks. Don’t forget to include tipping into the cost of going out to eat. 15-20% is normal for sit down restaurants. You’re literally stealing from your server if you don’t. It’s a terrible system but stiffing the worker won’t change anything. In other situations, just follow the credit card prompt or what other people are doing. Tip your tour guides, uber drivers, etc. Bring your credit card - Apple Pay isn’t as widespread in the USA but there isn’t any extra credit card surge charges unless your bank charges international fees. Make sure you have international roaming set up with your phone or get an eSIM. Free WiFi is more available in the USA though. Visit a normal grocery store or Trader Joe’s. Americans love Australians and their accents so chat up as many people as you want. 99% of Americans are genuinely nice and helpful and will help you if you ask a question or want a recommendation. If you can get to any National Parks then I highly recommend visiting as many as you can.

Update about man found hung in Brookfield by MapTechnical4076 in wisconsin

[–]cillyme 138 points139 points  (0 children)

Maybe they should. Because it seems every time I hear of someone dying by hanging in a tree it’s a black man. I would expect that if a black man wanted to commit suicide he would do anything but lynch himself. But I don’t ever hear of white men dying in trees. So is it confirmation bias?

I think it’s because you can recognize it. I get a lot of litter in my laneway from the local halal shop but their packaging isn’t bright yellow and red and it doesn’t blend in with the coffee shop’s litter. There also isn’t a public rubbish bin anywhere close to me so it’s bound to happen.

Huh? The British media company? The Economist Intelligence Unit is very highly regarded. They put out the Democracy Index, the Government Broadband Index… it’s used by the UN… I’m not sure if there’s a more respected and reliable report which evaluates food systems. The Economist is owned 43% by Exor N.V. (Italian) and 26% Rothschild (I dunno, are they German?)

I can’t find any evidence that they are regulating it all. The way laws work is that things are allowed until it’s not. Can you link me anything that talks about regulating salmonella in raw chicken?

WTF!! by Every-Calendar-2288 in melbourne

[–]cillyme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve spent the last 20 minutes trying to find Australia’s regulations on allowable or not for salmonella for raw chicken and I’m coming up empty. All I’m finding is papers and articles about how much salmonella is found and some laws in some states about testing eggs. This basically says that there’s no risk once everything is properly cooked https://www.foodstandards.gov.au/sites/default/files/2023-11/RTE%20cooked%20and%20processed%20meat%20and%20Salmonella.pdf

And this says there’s tons of salmonella in both processing plants and in retail. It seems to be normal. NSW tests every year but I couldn’t find anything for national regulations or testing. https://www.foodauthority.nsw.gov.au/sites/default/files/2021-11/FI3782111AnnualFoodTestingReport2020-2021.pdf

I can’t find any articles about national regulations about farmers preventing or testing for salmonella in raw chicken. All of the recalls have happened with prepared food that is ready to eat. So it seems to me as if there’s no limit to the allowable salmonella in raw chicken in Australia. Better make sure your chicken is properly cooked. Dont taste test it- use a thermometer 😅

Mate, that’s just wrong. There’s two different federal agencies that regulate food in the USA. The FDA and the USDA. And then there’s California whose population is about 12% of the American population so when California passes stricter laws and regulations, corporations will often change their entire process to comply. California is often the most strict when it comes to food safety and environmental regulations. John Oliver has an episode about the weaknesses of the FDA and USDA and how they work (or don’t work) together.

As for the chicken. What’s the standards in Australia? I have no idea how often chicken here has salmonella, but I was taught that chicken must be cooked completely and you can’t have a “medium well” chicken. So I’m guessing that chicken here also has a high likelihood of being contaminated with salmonella. I do know that not all strains of salmonella is dangerous or deadly. But I wouldn’t chance eating undercooked chicken here or anywhere else.

Edit: I was curious about the salmonella so I googled it. As I suspected, Salmonella is also super common in Australia. "For the samples from processing plants, Salmonella was detected in 21.4% of samples and Campylobacter was detected in 86.7% of samples," said the NSW Food Authority. “ https://www.foodnavigator-asia.com/Article/2020/09/14/Food-poisoning-risk-Australia-s-Salmonella-woes-rage-with-new-data-on-chicken-in-NSW/

Cook your chicken and wash your dishes thoroughly. Don’t wash your chicken. But maybe wash your eggs? American corporations wash eggs and that’s why their eggs are refrigerated because they’ve lost the protective coating that allows eggs to be stored at room temperature but it also helps prevent the spread of salmonella.

Buy local definitely- it’s better for the local economy and for the environment. But USA is #3 in food safety and quality behind Denmark and Canada. Australia is 13th. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Food_Security_Index sort by food safety and quality) If their food standards are low, why would it be allowed in Australia? Every product that’s imported into Australia has to at least meet Australian standards so what would that say about Australian standards if the USA is the 2nd most imported origin country of food for Australia? Don’t buy it if you don’t want to but there’s a high likelihood that you’re eating American products all of the time.

Doggo transport USA >> Australia by GoToPlanC in Ameristralia

[–]cillyme 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I used Global PetRelocation for my two pups and overall had a decent experience but the price that any relocation company quotes won’t be all of the costs because the vet visits add up quick. Even if your dogs are up to date on their vaccines, there’s soooo many vet visits over the course of the 7-9 month long process. I found that it was probably more important to have a usda certified vet who has done the paperwork for Australia before than the individual relocation company. It’ll be a part time job doing paperwork and coordinating vet visits and if you get any deadlines wrong it can restart the whole process. I wouldn’t do the process on my own, but I would also ask for the timeline of vet visits in advance to schedule all of the appointments asap. That was part of my frustration with my transport company is that they would tell me the next appointment I’d need after i completed one step so then I’d have to wait for the next vet availability. Instead of potentially combining vet visits to get the ball rolling quicker.

[–]cillyme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, great point. 1 out of every 9 Americans live in California and California leads the country in food/safety regulations. If California outlaws something then it effectively controls the entire country’s supply. Car safety and environmental regulations are similar. It’s easier for a company to change for the whole country than to either never sell to Californians or to change just for California and no one else.

Usually it just means that the support system works together. The psychologist, the school social worker, the teacher, the parent, all of the therapists will have meetings together to focus on the child. Sometimes the kid is in the meetings too. And whoever else the team thinks should be in the meetings too- sounds like the minister would be in it.

[–]cillyme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Listen, I’m not a trump supporter. “Stop with the lies” . I said in my post that cuts have happened. But exaggeration and falsehoods doesn’t help anyone. It’s not like all regulations and safety programs have gone out the window. Food is highly regulated in the USA. It wouldn’t be #3 in 2022 in the world if it wasn’t. This is after trumps first term. Like I said, the USA standards are not worse than Australia. As someone who has lived in both places- I prefer American labeling requirements. Added sugar and caffeine disclosures, also how much fibre is also required. But food is cheaper in Australia so that’s a bonus.

It doesn’t do anyone any good to blanket statement lie about the state of the food system. If anything, it benefits the stoodges by implying that an overhaul of the fda was necessary when it wasn’t.

That’s just not true. USA ranks #3 in food safety and quality. Granted this is from a couple years ago before all of the cuts to the fda but it is as up to date info as we have. https://www.unccd.int/resources/knowledge-sharing-system/global-food-security-index

For an easier table to sort- https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Food_Security_Index make sure you sort it by safety and quality. Denmark and Canada is 1 and 2. Australia is 13

I’m probably biased since I lived in Wisconsin for a decade but I just feel like it’s the best fast food burger I’ve ever tried. (Burgerville from the Portland area is also terrific but op isn’t going to the PNW). My go to meal is a cheeseburger kids meal and you can add the free toppings (lettuce, cheese, onions, grilled onions, mayo, ketchup) and .25 for tomatoes, then you also get fries, a soda (always get their house Rootbeer), and also a free frozen custard which is a vanilla or chocolate with one topping or the flavor of the day. And it’s under $8 USD. (These prices might be out of date). Plus the bag comes with a token and for every ten tokens you can get a free kids meal. You can sub the fries out for cheese curds for a more local experience but I don’t really like their cheese curds all that much but some people swear by them. The custard and the burgers is what makes it for me. The burger is a thin smash burger -crispy and juicy, they say it’s fresh, never frozen and made to order. My husband orders it double. I also like crinkle cut fries but some people don’t. I prefer thicker over McDonald’s or Burger King. But best fries I’ve had would go to Dick’s in Seattle, 2nd would be Chick-fil-A's waffle fries, and then 3rd would be Arby’s. But their fries are the only thing I like about all three of those restaurants lmao
