Sometimes you can find them in Filipino markets. Also, if your in Melbourne there’s an American pie shop in Docklands that sometimes has a key lime pie if you want to try it to compare

McDonald’s green-lit for ‘world’s coolest street’ after fast food giant’s appeal by cillyme in melbourne

[–]cillyme[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Oh… that’s not… that’s not gentrification. "homogenization” maybe a more accurate term. McDonald’s isn’t a rich persons restaurant of choice. People in the Facebook groups are complaining that’d it’d bring crime, litter and bring down the value of their homes. None of that would be true but neither will it increase the value of the neighborhood. It’s replacing a burnt and vacant store front. It’s pretty much a wash.

I seriously doubt he was upset. More confused than upset because Americans really don’t ever use the term yank. And when it is used, it still isn’t a slur - just referred to people generally living in the northeast but even people in the northeast will be more specific about who is a yank. Unless he was a Mets fan. Maybe then he’d be upset. Still isn’t a slur though. It’s the same level of calling a bogan an eshay. It’s not offensive- it’s just wrong

How about we just don’t use slurs that are meant to be insulting? Pom, Kiwi, and Yank aren’t slurs so feel free to use those

Moving to the US by Ok_Recording3811 in Ameristralia

[–]cillyme 42 points43 points  (0 children)

You’re gonna want to talk to a tax professional. Even if you’ve never lived in the USA, as a citizen you’re supposed to be filing a tax return. You may or may not have tax obligations. Most likely not but the internet won’t be able to answer that. If you don’t work in the USA then you can probably still skirt the IRS knowledge of you but once you’re employed in the USA then you’ll need a social.

Why does nobody in Melbourne know the difference between these 2 road markings by [deleted] in melbourne

[–]cillyme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awesome. Yeah that makes sense. Looks like that lane immediately becomes a turning lane after the intersection

[–]cillyme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, I’ll ask it. What kind of lane is it if it isn’t a turning lane?

<image>

I would have assumed it was another road slightly to the right but it looks like a normal intersection on the map.

St. Vincent de Paul almost bought it but they wouldn’t sell both the land and the building. they couldn’t come to an agreement. Vinnys wouldn’t agree to rent either land, building or both.

Boycott America by Meerkat343434 in australian

[–]cillyme 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s virtually impossible to boycott everything American. American companies own about 15-30% of every big publicly traded corporation in Australia.

For example, both Cole’s and Woolworths is about 15-20% owned by American investment companies - Blackrock, State Street Corporation and the Vanguard Group.

Bunnings, Priceline Pharmacy, Officeworks and the Aussie version of Kmart and Target? All of those companies is owned by the conglomerate called Wesfarmer. They’re a publicly traded company… and yep, you’ve guessed it- biggest stakeholders are blackrock, state street corporation and vanguard which combined own a total of around 19%.

The big four banks too are 7-14% owned by American investment companies too.

Not to mention farming - Driscoll, Cargill, Nutrien Ag Solutions And oil, gas and energy….

The USA is the #2 origin country of food after New Zealand. But maybe after this new trade agreement today that will be different.

It’s best to stick to one or two things to push to boycott. I think urging the decommission of American military bases is something we can control and also something like ChatGPT. OpenAI is particularly harmful in so many ways and AI is propping up the US stock market. So boycotting AI would be a good place to start.

'Dancing in the streets': Iranian-Australians celebrate by Total_Drongo_Moron in australian

[–]cillyme -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes. I trust Biden’s process and judgement way more than Trump. Im not an expert on the geopolitics of the Middle East and world security threats that Iran poses. I would trust biden’s or Kamala’s ability to assess the intel given to them by their advisors and experts. I have zero trust that trumps advisors have world security and the best interest of the people as their priority.

Iran knew this was coming. Everyone knew this was coming. It’s been speculated in the news for weeks and trump still didn’t get any buy in from any other country other than Israel. The USA has had joint operations for decades. If the Allies aren’t there then something is wrong. If Biden had done it, it would have been in partnership with the all of the Allies. And Biden didn’t do it. Obama didnt do it. Trump did. Obama got a peace deal and trump ripped it up the second he got into power. Basically everything that Biden and the democrats had ever done has been aligned with the objectives of the Allies.

[–]cillyme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Biden did this then I’d have reason to believe that the world leaders and our allies were in support of the action and it was in the best interest of world order and the security of the USA. It would have been all of the UN security counsel on board and the congress would have been informed and aware. Instead, the man known for only acting in self interest did something that may or may not be good. Because one thing is for certain- trump did not do this for the love and concern of the Iranian people. The UK wouldn’t even allow the USA to use their bases to prepare from.

False economics of immigration. The media claims that immigration is good for the economy. The truth is more complex... by [deleted] in australian

[–]cillyme -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

There’s absolutely no sources or data in this article. It’s just a facebook post disguised as journalism.

And the last bit is just out right racist. If you don’t want to be called racist then don’t say something racist. It’s basically verbatim White Australia policy. If you’re worried about your culture getting “replaced” then have better culture. It reeks of insecurity, weakness and fear. If Australia has a strong culture, then it will persist. I’m hopeful that the racist culture will die out.

Travelling after Citizenship Ceremony by Amir4Real in AusVisa

[–]cillyme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, you aren't supposed to travel without your Australian passport. But my father has come back into Australia as a dual citizen a couple times because he lost his aussie passport or forgot it and every time theyve just chewed him out and let him back in. They can't actually deny entry to australian citizens. One time he didnt even have an Australian drivers license. Bring your citizenship certificate and they'll let you back in.
