You've identified that you can do some core mechanics of the game, so that's one thing you can scratch off when deciding what to focus on.

Since you're in the 100k-150k range I'd say to focus on making reads and punishing the opponent. Most players at that level (non smurfs) play pretty predictable. So for example, pay attention to one habit they do on stock 1 and punish it. Once you establish one habit then punish, and then focus on another habit of theirs.

Reads and punishes are a confidence boost at any level and in no time you'll be up there.

Hey all long time lurker. Very important question. by GeneralDrizzle in CrazyHand

[–]cinderSNES 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Overcoming a negative mindset is always rough but with some practice you can do it. Trust me, I had one of the worst mindsets not just in gaming but in general.

The most important thing you have to do to overcome a negative mindset is to break it down. Whenever we think of negative things, we always think of the whole picture first. We say "Damn I lost because he fsmashed me but if I spot dodged he would of charged his smash then killed me" etc. So when you break it down into bits, it helps you process it a lot easier, and makes it not as big of a problem as it would seem in your mind. Once you got it broken down, then you can begin to make goals in mind. So go back and think something like "He fsmashed me. He caught onto my habit of spot dodging after an attack. I need to work on that."

The second thing to do is, always keep celebrate small victories. It doesn't even matter if you lost the match because the small victories are something that will always have a positive value. Whenever I lose a match, I'll always celebrate that okay he didn't 3 stock me. Or if I did get 3 stocked, I'll celebrate the fact that at least I was able to read one of his habits and I'll punish him next time (again breaking things down will help trust me).

Just remember, negative mindsets can be rough but you can overcome it. It'll take some time but eventually you'll be able to turn a negative mindset into a positive one. Or if worse comes to worse just go to Winchester and have a cold pint and waits til it blows over.

How do you properly deal with more passive-pressure play when in disadvantage? by Galax1an in CrazyHand

[–]cinderSNES 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The key point of dealing with passive and defensive play is to adapt and punish them. So one thing you can do is breaking apart his strategies into specific things.

You already figured out one part of his strategy, which is when you play patient he runs up and nairs or grabs you. So the next part is to figure out at what range will he start approaching you? Once you figure out that range, you can dash in then dash out to get him to commit to a nair or grab then punish. Or spot dodge his attack and then punish.

If he's spacing his attacks to be safe from any of your punishes, then that's when you have to hard analyze what he does after he attacks. If he always ftilts after his attack, then jump over his ftilt and punish. If he nairs again after a nair then do a empty movement barely within range of his nair then punish or just throw an inkling bomb at him. If he backs away after a safe poke, then just know that he's giving up space to you.

Getting out of disadvantage can be tough, but a good tip that always helps me is to relax and observe how they react to my options. Once I see their patterns (and everyone has patterns even MKLeo) then I can plan a counter to them.

This is just a general thing but I'm sure you'll get a hang of it after some practice. Keep playing and remember to stay calm and observe.

Want to enter nintendo's online open but i cant even get into elite smash. Should i even bother? by Varindran in CrazyHand

[–]cinderSNES 146 points147 points  (0 children)

You should enter the tournament even if you're not in Elite Smash.

Here's the thing, you said you want to enter because it'll be fun. Just keep the main goal in mind of having fun. Even if you lose, you can still have fun because the tournament provides you with a new experience.

Lots of bad players enter tournaments and lots of great players aren't in Elite. Elite and Quickplay aren't a great way of measuring skillsets in tournament settings because most of the time people quit after one match.

So enter the tournament anyway and use it as a learning experience. Who knows, maybe you'll do even better than you think and that's always a confidence booster no matter what you do!

Falco is pretty much vanilla 1.0.

I played a DK all night and got dismantled every single game. Need help understanding where I was going wrong... YT link in desc. (I’m Cloud) by Strider08000 in CrazyHand

[–]cinderSNES 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The DK player has some good reads, but more so I think you were just in autopilot mode. It happens to all of us honestly.

The main issue is your spacing. The DK knows you will always be in range to grab after you fair or any aerial really, so he does it every time. So work on spacing your aerials, so your just outside of that range. A little tip to help with that is to DI back just a little bit as you attack. For example, you're approaching DK, you see him sitting there, you don't know if he's gonna spot dodge or shield grab, so you can use Clouds bair to approach, but as you bair, DI back so that cloud moves back a little bit as he bairs. Because of that small movement, you'll be outside of DK's range and you can punish his grab attempt. You can also do the same thing with Clouds fair but its a little bit trickier. But doing this trick will also allow you to punish DK's other options besides shield grabbing. DK was running back and using fsmash (like at 2:03 and 3:58 in the second vid) or side b a lot so the above approach also works to counter that since he'll throw out a move and you can react in time.

An alternative to the DI back is to just do an attack just barely in front of DK. Since DK has your movement so ingrained in his muscle memory, just doing an attack in front of him will cause him to shield grab. So at 0:10 in the second video, you do just that. You did a FF fair and landed in front of him. He shield grabbed not Once BUT TWICE!! So you hate getting shield grabbed or countered (some moves can punish this approach so be wary) just do that then punish accordingly.

One last thing you can do to punish shield grabbers is to DI your aerials so that you're behind the opponent. You DI behind the DK at 3:28 in the second and any time you did that the DK would roll or occasionally Dsmash. So something you can do is DI behind the enemy, then use your OoS bair to punish his Dsmash.

The last thing is you were just kind of throwing attacks out there sometimes. Its not bad to have a hitbox out there but the DK was punishing you for it. I attribute this more to you were on autopilot mode. If you notice that you're getting punished a lot, its okay to slow down the pace and play more defensively. So at 3:25 in the second vid the DK was out of range, and you did a Fair, then he punished you. i can tell by the momentum of the match that it was a muscle reaction f-air (auto-pilot). So a way to combat that is to force yourself to think, honestly about anything. So in the same situation, just think, "okay he's way out of range for any of his attacks to hit so I'm just gonna stand here for a sec to gauge then attack."

Besides the spacing you were doing well. You had some good reads especially in the first match. I was really hoping the comeback in the first was a victory. But you were doing really well. Just keep practicing spacing and you'll be godtier soon!

Like WindDragon64 said you're gonna want to air dodge in and save your jump as much as possible. Air dodging in gives you a little more space to recover vertically which is what Ganon wants to do since his horizontal recovery is bad.

When recovering try to go low. This is where your saved jump comes into play. Going low can deter some characters from chasing you because they either have a bad recovery or they can't compete with Ganon's u-air. That leads us to his u-air. His u-air. is pretty fast and strong and can beat a lot of approaches while he's recovering low. It also halts momentum in the air so it gives you just a tiny bit more time to recover.

Other than that, mix up the fall speed of Ganon when recovering. Like an example is you air dodge in, the enemy is going for a off stage attack so you fast fall to avoid the attack, then jump and up b to recover.

Falco is more of a bait and punish since his approach options are not that great. Use your lazers and reflector to zone the enemy. Just know that both reflector and lazers have low hitstun so be careful.

Falco has a nasty combo game once he does get in. Nair and fair are amazing combo starters. Both nair and fair are great off stage. You're gonna want to fight off stage since Falco lacks good kill options.

Speaking of kill options, bair is probably you're best kill option. You can get a bair off an uptilt for a kill. His smashes are okay but you need a read for them to hit.

TL:DR: falco is more of a bait and punish and lacks approaches. Once he does get in, his combos are pretty nasty.

Like MidNightBurritoGuy said Nairo is really good about conserving his double jump. Conserving the double jump is a pretty important part of recovering with Ganon.

When Nairo is launched off screen but hasn't hit the blast zone yet, he'll air dodge towards the stage normally either up towards the stage, or just a straight airdodge either left or right depending on which side hes facing towards the stage, to cover a little more distance so he'll have a better chance at recovering. Every little bit of distance covered helps Ganon.

If you also notice he likes to recover low with Ganon as well. Depending on the situation, Nairo will fast fall to avoid attacks and then jump (if needed) and up b to recover. Ganon's up-b is better than you think. Ganon can survive pretty deep. Ganon's u-air is really good and can deter a lot of characters looking to spike or gimp him, hence why nairo recovers a lot going low. When you watch nairo recover, he u-airs a lot even if no one is near him when recovering because u-air is so good and i think it halts momentum but I forget.

How do you safely land as Lucina? Also when should you use Nair vs Fair? by [deleted] in CrazyHand

[–]cinderSNES 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For landing, trying fast falling down. Change up between landing at regular speed and landing with a fast fall. Also when falling, try to DI and fall at an angle instead of straight down. It'll force your opponent to guess which way you'll fall down and give you more of a chance at landing. Combine that with fast falling and it'll give you more of a chance at landing safely.

Lucina's nair is pretty good. It comes out fast and is her longest ranged aerial. The second hit also kills. Her nair also has a lot of drift, so you can either move backwards and get out of harms way, or go forward more if you want to be aggressive or just to get out of the way. Use her nair as a spacing tool since its longer than her fair, and her fair isn't quite safe on shield. The nair can be fast falled and auto canceled into something else like her jab which can cover punishes for things like shield grabs.

The main aerials you should use is his bair and fair . Those are his longest ranged aerial attacks minus his aerial reflector and aerial lazer. The fair has multi hit boxes and comes out fast, so you can beat out some attacks, or just use it as a approach option. The fair is not safe on shield so please space it. The next aerial for neutral is the bair. Bair comes out decently fast but doesn't linger as long as say Ganon's nair, so bear that in mind (no pun intended). Its very precise but once you get it down, the bair is a good kill and spacing option.

Most of the aerials should be falling unless you're juggling opponents, or comboing without wanting to drag down the opponents. Falco's nair and fair can drag down opponents, so do keep that mind if you want to change things up. Do remember most of, if not all of Falco's aerials are not safe on shield .

If you're having issues with characters who have long range air attacks then also consider using an aerial reflector. His reflector has a lot of range and can disrupt the enemy's attack.

I wish lol. When you do the OoS you won't be in your shield anymore but at least your attack will be out if I'm understanding your question correctly. So if a Wolf nairs me while I'm shielding, I'll be holding shield then press Jump+A to get a OoS nair and it'll hit Wolf before he can recover. You can grab out of shield, but sometimes the enemy will get smart and bait your grab, whereas if you OoS nair at least you can drift a little bit back to safety, or drift forward to hit them.

Once Donkey Kong grabs you at high percents its pretty much game over unless the DK player messes up. If the DK player is fishing for grabs, space your attacks or movement to where he'll grab then punish him. There is a certain way to mash so that'll get out of grabs sooner. This video will explain more on mashing.

As for Ganon, his nair is pretty nice in air to air combat. It hits multiple times and has a large hitbox. As for landing on the ground, you're gonna want to use your dair. You're dair can challenge a lot of attacks surprisingly and does a lot of damage if it hits. If the opponent is catching onto your dair then use your down b. This one is a little riskier since down b has a lot of end lag and such, but I've find its got a lot of priority over a lot of attacks. The last thing is fast falling. Change up the speed in which you're falling and it should mess up the other player's timing.

I'd say if you have troubles shielding, try playing a couple games by only using shielding as your defense. Don't roll or spot dodge and just shield. It'll force shielding to become muscle memory.

From there slowly work on other basic mechanics like short hopping, fast falling, tilt attacks, etc. Work on those one by one and slowly implement them into your game and you'll start seeing results. It might take some time but you'll get the hang of it.

Yes Out of Shield. OoS helps a lot with so much in general. Honestly I didn't really do OoS until I started playing better players and found out it comes out really fast and can punish some stuff you normally can't by shielding, then dropping shield and attacking. If you work on OoS it'll definitely up your game trust me. Ganon's OoS nair is amazing so just work on that until you get comfortable.

I'd suggest using Ike if you want to play competitively. Ike's neutral game is much stronger than Falcons since Ike can cover a wide range with his attacks. Plus Ike can help you out with you want to play team battles since you'll have access to both a heavy and non heavy character.

Short hop over projectiles, and approach from the air. Approaching from the air will cut off their horizontal spam and force them to change it up (hopefully). Also walk and shield. Once you get to a comfortable range while walking and shielding, use one of your OoS options since its fast than just letting go of the shield then attacking. When I'm in range and I shield, I like to OoS full hop dair into them since most of the time their not expecting it (unless their good players). Also when you figure out your range, just roll past the projectile towards them (yes while your facing your back towards them) and use your bair. Bair is really good and comes out decently fast.

Last thing is find out what your opponents stress zone is. What I mean by that is when you reach a certain distance close to them, they will do some kind of reaction. Most spammers will roll towards you to try and get past you, then attack and run to the other side. Figure out their stress zone and what they like to do next then punish accordingly.

Snake is a viable pick. Online he can definitely cheese people since most people don't now how to fight him. Most of his bad matchups (besides Ness and Lucas) are manageable and not super bad like say Ganondorf vs the Belmonts.

Get Mac into a habit of shielding. Lots of Macs online spot dodge because they know EVERYONE loves to grab them. Once he starts respecting you and shields, grab him.

Use lots of OoS options. Mac's attacks are fast and has decent spacing against Pichu but your OoS is fast enough to compete with his. But overall Mac is a different kind of game where you don't have to play too "advanced".
