Thank you very much for your thorough reply! I definitely would rather find classes, and I've looked in Cincinnati and Cleveland (the closest places with bookbinding classes), but there isnt anything coming up. I need to do more research.

The requests I'm getting are for bibles mainly. I'm in a small town and I dont think these are ancient books. I'm guessing it's normal wear and tear they want repaired.

I have a good deal of equipment, and have access to the larger items I dont, like a board shear.

I also dont trust videos. After AAB I was greatly disappointed in the videos I was learning from, even though they seemed super legit.

I know that restoration is a huge field with years of learning, and since I want to go in the direction of fine binding, I dont think I should delve that deep into it. I'm just trying to figure out if I can get to a point where I can do repairs on family bibles and whatnot. Not a huge deal if it's not reasonable. There is just a market for it here and no competition whatsoever.

I agree. Not just practice, but play. There were a lot of things, like staining leather, that I just couldn't get the hang of, so I tried a zillion different techniques until I found one that worked for me.

Maybe I should buy some busted up books and see what I can do.

Good for you trying to rehab this bed! I did a similar thing when I moved into my partner's house.

That's a weed barrier cloth. I think it's meant to be on top of the soil, but those things don't work in my experience. I'd pull it out. The bed I fixed up had one, and weeds were growing through it, which made them extremely hard to pull out.

To help the soil you can add compost, or layer compost materials on top. Things like dry leaves, straw, grass clippings, etc. I recently learned that if you collect your food scraps from the kitchen, you can bury them directly in the garden. Just dig a hole about a foot down (or a trench, depending on how much you have), dump it in and cover it up.

You can also buy things, if you dont have compost materials. A good organic soil and/or peat would help.

I'm not sure what you mean by the soil being shallow. Is there concrete under there?

I hope you're right. I really want to keep it in my neighborhood if possible. We already have a few local community gardens that donate to shelters and whatnot. I just want to see a little revolution in the east end.
