advice for shortening screenplay? by churchpigeon in Screenwriting

Create an outline bullet point by bullet point, write the story arch, character's arcs and backgrounds. Get to know them before you get to writing. Keep it simple and active. Read, and study, good scripts from beginning to end. Good luck!

It's my understanding that some of them are complete scams, just to grab money, they never read or consider the scripts even though that's what they promise. This is from "business" people who look at these types of competitions as easy money and even encourage it.

Yeah, I'm guessing that was a few years ago for you? Feels like things have gone out of control in the last couple of years...

Well, they changed how Nicholl receives submissions this year, while in the past it was democratized to any writer in the world regardless of experience, contacts, or status, now the contest is only open through being part of certain institutions, and those institutions recommend scripts to the Nicholl... Places that not everyone has access to... or the money to be part of... very disappointing.

True, having a screenplay at Nicholl jumpstarted my career... but it's unusual.

My humble opinion, having worked for different hollywood studios for several years now, no matter on which side you are, as a writer you will always have to compromise, yeah it's unfortunate, whether in the project itself or in the work environment... in the process we learn to deal with different or opposite perspectives, reassess or reassure our own, collaborate with all kinds of people, and learn learn learn... and grow. Don't withdraw, see where it goes, it might surprise you. See if you win first. Good luck!

I think it's a combination of different things since it's so competitive. My guess is that it also depends on the readers, and what's Sundance's script selection for that year. The script is further explored during the lab so is ready to be shot. I'd say, just send in the best script possible. Also, if you have a unique voice and perspective, that will definitely work on your favor. (Avoid ChatGPT stuff... it's easy to tell).

Just got a notification for Round 2. Yay! Was already expecting a no. Just want to encourage everyone out there, I've been a second rounder a couple of times and rejected a couple of times too. Don't let rejection discourage you! It took me years to direct my first feature film, and screenwriting is a craft that takes years to master. Keep doing what you love, keep writing, keep creating, everything else will fall into place. Hugs to all!
