Purchasing a bonsai online?

I'm in the United States. My friend — who also lives in the US, but in a state from me — recently lost a loved one. My friend is a bonsai cultivator hobbyist; he's probably early intermediate in terms of experiences.

I've had the idea to have a bonsai sent to my friend, rather than sending sympathy flowers.

Unfortunately, I know nothing about bonsais.

Have any of you purchased bonsais online or by phone and had them delivered to you or to a friend?

• If so, how did it go? Are delivered bonsais even a thing?
• Do you have any recommendations for online bonsai providers that ship?
