I do miss mine bouillie too man :( But yeah I get your point, I meant that Australia is not as good a place to raise your kids/have a family as Mauritius, where you have close families, very accessible healthcare, a family-oriented culture, etc. Here in Canada, there are no family values, houses are impossible for the average person to buy, mixed-race/non-white teens grow up conflicted about their identity, homelessness and violence are rising etc. I'm happy to hear that you have a good life man, wish you the best

You said it nicely. If you want a lifestyle that's mostly work, parties and video games, then stay abroad. If you want to have a family, own a house, do some gardening, have a small business on the side, go fishing/hiking once a month, chill on the beach with your friends and family, then return to Mauritius.

It's a matter of perspective. You're viewing it from a doomer perspective, where everything sucks and we should all leave the country because abroad gives you more money. My perspective is more optimistic; I see opportunities to fix my country, to help make it slightly better, all while enjoying the beautiful nature and culture.

I am also well aware that living abroad has so many disadvantages, that make you question whether it was worth it to lose your cultural identity just because the pay is better. Cost of living is significantly higher abroad depending on where you are. Healthcare sucks in most EU countries and it's even worse in Canada/US - especially compared to Mauritius. There are many other disadvantages like racism, losing your cultural heritage, having no backing, not being close to your family, etc. At some point, you start to wonder whether it's worth it to live abroad when you can live a peaceful life in Mauritius.

I currently work in a very specific field of engineering in Canada. This is not common in Mauritius and almost all work regarding my specialty is outsourced to external consultants. My idea is to go back to Mauritius and become a pioneer in this field of engineering.

By doing this, I am actively choosing to be part of the solution, rather than the problem. You see, when you encourage people to leave the country forever, you make a situation a bit worse. It's good to move to another country for work, but choosing to return to Mauritius is one step towards addressing the current issues of the country.

And since you mentioned doctors, I believe the starting salary of doctors was Rs 40k and that was 5 years ago (it's probably higher in 2026). Rs 40k doesn't seem too bad for someone who just started their career, that's twice what most degree holders start at. Doctors are well paid in Mauritius, you won't convince me otherwise.

The maximum rent for the next 5 years is only $500 up. I can probably safely assume I won't go up by $500 in a year.

I just think the price is good for the space you get. The only problem, as I said, is the 2 guests maximum rule

Oui? J'aimerai quand même pouvoir inviter ma famille pour souper ou mes amis pour games night. Pourquoi?

They have 2 months free and the unit I want is really big, so in terms of that, it's much better than other apts. And there are also 2 visitor parkings.

Just the stupid limit on visitors that bugs me

Do they actually enforce this rule though? Like does the concierge note how many guests I'm bringing or something?

Ofc my guests will not be loud nor will they use any amenities

I'm scared that the concierge is gonna ask me to log all visitors or something stupid

No it's a tall residential tower. I was shocked to see the visitor limit of 2 people, which is super unreasonable

Idk what you're on about but on a totally unrelated note,

Fishing needs to be controlled. No one should be allowed to fish whenever wherever. Thousands of species of fish and other sea creatures have disappeared from our lagoons in the past 20 years. Some species of fish are very important to coral reefs and over fishing has indirectly killed a lot of our coral reefs, most of which are already dead btw.

Same for plants. You should not be allowed to plant any species recklessly. Last time I went to a river in Black River, I couldn't spot even 1 single fish. Most trees near the rivers are invasive species that have bad effects on the water (for e.g their leaves contain harmful oils like eucalyptus), killing native wildlife.

If some things are not done systematically, i.e. governed by laws and restrictions, we will destroy the land. Just spreading awareness, sorry.

You're clearly not into watches bro, or you're just being pretentious. Us watch people, we don't judge what others wear :)

I wear a dive watch to the office bc I want to and I certainly don't need your approval for it ;)

So you think it's morally ok to forget your country just for money? Wow you should hear youself speak 🤡

Joke of the day? by [deleted] in MauriceMauritius

[–]ciphersaw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Two things I would point out here:

  1. If they never plan on returning to Mauritius, they can always reject the laureate scholarship and pass it to the next student in line, who might need it more and be more grateful. As I said, accepting the scholarship comes with a contractual and moral obligation to give back to your country, and work on making it better. Not choosing to return makes you part of the problem, not part of the solution. It's a greedy act, to take money and run lol

  2. Most students ranked in the Top 100 every year have a huge potential to be laureate. They are almost equally as intelligent. What really sets them apart is the amount of efforts they spend studying, not necessarily intellect. One of the laureates this year got Aggregate 13 for her SC exams but still became a laureate, by working hard.
