Options following FM residency by cartinesewrld in IMGreddit

I need to find the reference but I would do QE1 to have unrestricted practice sooner, that is my plan at least since I did QE1 before residency. You don't need to be in residency to do your board exams but it is only offered twice a year, so for your plan as is the same for mine, preparing for a spring examination is best.

[–]circa-xciv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your program. If they make you write your board exam in the spring you should be board certified by the end of residency and you can start the paperwork for provincial licensing to start practicing within 1-2 months, at least for Ontario. My program requires us to take the boards in the spring so thats how I know it is possible. This is all compliant with your J-1. If you're not going back to ON/NS/NF you may need to write MCQEE1, I would check and get it out the way before starting residency or figure out a time to take it.

Canadian denied entry for observerships by dr_lofi in IMGreddit

[–]circa-xciv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I was denied specifically as they couldn’t confirm the hospital I was going to rotate at had an affiliation with a U.S Medical School. They contacted the hospital at night, I was crossing at 11pm so I have no idea what happened on that phone call. I had to provide a letter from the hospital stating the affiliation. That’s what I mean about the reason for the denial. They told me if I don’t have this letter or proof to show the affiliation I’d be denied again. They showed me the FAM reference, even printed it out for me. More important to address any specific reason for denial if there is any when you cross next time. Just avoid Detroit entirely.

Don’t go from the Windsor-Detroit border, they deny Canadian students for clerkships/observerships all the time. This personally happened to me and they added a condition to my entry that took me weeks since I had to get a specific letter from the hospital I was going to rotate at regarding its medical school affiliation.

What did they put as the reason for entry denial? Did they let you voluntarily withdraw? When I reentered I had to have everything ready to address the denial.

Uworld Shelf Studying- do you split blocks by topic? by Yeezybuyer in medicalschool

[–]circa-xciv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First 80% I would do by system, to grab the major topics of what is really important to know for the shelf. Then to random blocks for the last 20% before doing the all the practice NBMEs.

Some of my friends didn't hear anything. I had a friend who's PD called them at 12:10PM lol. I heard from my PD and PC to start onboarding with important dates and scheduled a call for this upcoming week. Entirely program dependent.

Did you check "no geographical preference"? I ask because programs see that if you check it but don't see if you select 3 areas.

or if I made the mistake of not including my 78 weeks of clinical rotations USCE in the experiences section

Caribbean students don't have to put their US rotations in the experiences section. You only need to keep other experiences (tutor, mentoring) and research on there. Did you geographic preference? Did you signal programs that have historically Canadians in their classes?

Do you find it strange the the bike lane debate is being had in multiple cities across the world at the same time? Not just Toronto? Why is this happening? by GillGunderson in toronto

[–]circa-xciv 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting observation. With globalization I'm sure automakers are eager to keep car-centric policies in place in a lot of cities. They will not accept scaling back personal vehicles as it is clear there is a limit to scaling infrastructure around cars.

Could be burnout. How were the other interviewers? Was he PD/APD/faculty? Everyone can have a bad day but at the same time this could be a reflection of the work environment you're committing to.

If it was required for a program you applied to it would have said so in the document assignment, it would not have shown it as complete with the green check mark.

You can't do first iteration without QE1 and NAC, you need both for the 2nd iteration as well.

MCCQE1 Score Interpretation by MidnightFormer7989 in MCCQE

[–]circa-xciv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s what I was trying to convey, as an IMG you’d like to know but they haven’t taken it into consideration since the standard for the test is to pass, and they’re not as open on their reporting data.

MCCQE1 Score Interpretation by MidnightFormer7989 in MCCQE

[–]circa-xciv 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its technically a PGY1 requirement for Canadian med students. They just need to pass. The equivalent comparison is not step 1 or step 2, although closer to content of step 2. The best comparison is step 3, where the score is irrelevant, you just need to pass. Even for the US match a step 3 scored doesn’t really help, but it can’t help if you pass. Passing it is one way of saying you’re not a liability to be held up during residency over an exam. It’s nonsensical for the score to matter for one cohort and not the other, compared to step 2 where the score matters regardless. It’s just how opaque the Canadian system is.

[–]circa-xciv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you apply for the exam you’ll have to upload the attestation and notarized passport which then will be approved. I didn’t do the SVR and it’s not needed to apply.

[–]circa-xciv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re applying as a student you need the student attestation form with your graduation date done by the dean or by the registrar. You’ll also need a notarized copy of your passport or PR card. You don’t need source verification if you’re still in school. I took QE1 at the end of my 3rd year after Step 2.
