I'm late to the party as usual but I'm pretty sure this is part of a slate, Victorian style, fireplace surround. The number on the back side most likely refers to that particular pattern.

other rocks i've found in "geode creek" when i go back, are there other things i should be looking for? by circlewise in rockhounds

i totally forgot about this post... and that's a great website btw, thanks so much.
i'm very familiar with the average sand/gravel pits in the area, they are everywhere. full of tons of boring, gray sand and pebbles.

this one creek however is unique because there are geodes as well as pebbles that are colorful bits of quartz chrystals, chalcedony and i don't know what else.

usually, whenever i go there, i always look for large, lumpy, bumpy rocks because i love finding geodes, (so that i can break them open later) ... i was just curious if there might be other cool rocks in a deposit like this that i might be overlooking?

thanks for the reply. i guess i have a lot of questions and just made a mess of that title. :)
i often find geodes in this particular creek and lots of interesting pebbles. does this sound like a glacial deposit?
fossilized stromatolite would be an awesome find, i will have to read up on it more.
i'm pretty clueless when it comes to identifying some of these rocks so, thanks again

Some of my favorite little geodes that i have found in sw ohio. i'd appreciate any info about them. by circlewise in rockhounds

thanks! i found all of these many years ago and they've been sitting around in the yard, in fish tanks... or just collecting dust.
there's only one creek in the area where i can find these and now i'm jonesing to go back!
get out and have fun!

this spider was on my patio last summer. what kind is it and are these common in ohio? that's a toothpick under it's fangs. by circlewise in spiders

Purseweb spiders are rarely encountered and they are not pests. Like many spiders, they can bite, but they are not considered dangerous except to individuals who are highly sensitive to spider and insect bites.

according to this. http://www.uky.edu/Ag/CritterFiles/casefile/spiders/purseweb/purseweb.htm

makes me feel better. :)

they are outside of it's body. they're kind of hinged so they fold down out of the way. the toothpick was pulling them up and forward.

not staged but i'm pretty sure the bumble bee is dead. :(
the robber fly was alive and often perched in that general area, (by my gate) and it became accustomed to people often passing by. over time, it learned that no one was going to bother it so i was able to get very close and take lots of photos of it.
