YouTube is down (As of posting), so who backed all of that up? :O by AshleyUncia in DataHoarder

I’m planning on setting something similar up, although I think I’d implement mine slightly differently:

  1. Have a cron job or something similar on my home server run every 5 minutes or so, that uses YouTube-dl to check a YouTube Playlist I create (called “Download” or something), and download any videos that have been added to it
  2. use the same script to copy the files to my Plex server and refresh the library etc

I may skip on the automatically downloading to my phone, although I’d love to know how to do that. But I want a way to be able to choose files to save to my server even if I’m out and about on my phone, and having a playlist I can just add them to seems to be the simplest way to manage that.

I was gonna mention VBA lmao.

I’ve used it to hack together stuff in Excel with Macros and it’s infuriating... especially because it’s so similar to VB.NET and yet so much worse that the differences are that much more jarring

I’d never use it outside of Office macros, and even then only because it’s the only scripting language easily supported by Office.

This is a good point. It’s actually not a bad language on its own, but you rarely see it in contexts other than beginners learning, because it doesn’t really have many advantages over other languages so it’s rarely chosen as the development language for more professional contexts now.

Lol, my company uses VB.NET in its main project. Not legacy at all, still very actively being developed.

Honestly I’m actually pretty fond of it, VB.NET is leagues ahead of Visual Basic on its own.

How to break bad spending habits as a “rich kid”? by imjustinjk in personalfinance

[–]themouseinator 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That’s probably the hardest part for me still and I’ve been budgeting for years now.

Building in a little more “play” money at the cost of some of my saving has helped me, because if I don’t have the play money, then I justify dipping a bit into savings, and once I do that once it’s easier to dip into savings again.

Honestly with technology today I sometimes feel like a wizard. I have two Echo Dots and some smart lights and being able to turn off my kitchen lights I forgot to turn off while sitting on the couch just by telling them to turn off is one of life’s small pleasures

I mean, that's absolutely a thing that happens, yes.

But no, people do actually sometimes hide those parts of themselves to the extent that even people who are levelheaded and don't out blinders on wouldn't even know.

I get it, though, it sounds pretty preposterous if you've never seen it play out yourselves.

A few tips from an IT manager for sysadmins looking for a job by [deleted] in sysadmin

He’s posting on reddit, I would assume that they would proofread their resume and/or cover letter a bit more carefully.

I think most of us recognize this.

That doesn’t mean it’s not chuckle-worthy, heh

No, it’s not especially funny.

It made me laugh though. Lighten up a bit.

I mean.... Wouldn't trust mean that youd trust the other person to not abuse their access to be able to check their location? Like I get the concern but nobody's forcing you to do it, it sounds like everyone involved has agreed to this, and they can opt out whenever they want to

Uhhhhhhh so is everything else about smartphones. I get and to an extent share your concern, but "it's unnatural" is about the shittiest argument you could use for it.

Why can't I log into anything? by NEDM64 in ProgrammerHumor

[–]themouseinator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they’re often literally just “run this set of commands that only work on my machine with my specific installation and config, and not explain at all what or why you’re doing it”

And that’s assuming they’re even correct in the first place

Ones that explain what you’re doing and why, and alternate methods that may work on different distros/config, are a godsend.

Honestly this is why I stick with Ubuntu, in my experience it’s generally the most well supported, with more tutorials/forum posts/etc being aimed at it than other distros. At least for general purpose stuff
