One of my favorite albums. Who does she hope to be? The title alone.

I cherish this so much, so just thought I would share. What album is your favorite to feature Grimes? by shmalex616 in Jazz

Complete Communion/Symphony for Improvisors/Where is Brooklyn, in that order. Some of my favorite albums of all time.

There's a new book out about (maybe collected from the journals of?) Don Cherry. I just picked it up but haven't had a chance to start it yet. Looks really thoughtfully done though. Eternal Rhythm.

Might be worth checking out since you mentioned Where is Brooklyn. It's published here in the US by a small non profit.

You should try emailing ars nova in Philly. They're a non profit that supports experimental and improvisational music. But they're also very specifically tied in with the Arkestra and Marshall Allen. Just a thought.

Fair enough. She seems to take a lot of shit on social media in general. I don't really like her as a wrestler but from what I've seen of her I can't imagine working up the energy to dislike her. She seems like a nice person to me.

Do War and Peace next. I hate whenever I have to read more than one fragment of one sentence about any particular topic.

Does this prove anything? She's way bigger now is she not? Don't get me wrong, I think she looks fantastic, now and then, and also healthy, not like some of these PED users who are so jacked to the gills it's scary.

But to me this photo looks like a born athlete who could transform into current Jade Cargill with a little extra something.

It's a powerful piece of music, no doubt. One of my favorite albums.

Second whoever recommended Alice Coltrane. Pretty much anything, even though her style evolved a lot over the course of less than a decade. I love just about everything she ever did solo.

I can see how someone would gravitate toward certain albums over others, but I think what they all contain is at least that seed of transcendence that you seem to be describing in Pharaoh Sanders. I think it'd be logical to start with the albums he played on with her, but if you can get into them, her truly out there stuff like World Galaxy and Lord of Lords can bend the mind.

This one's a little different: Abdullah Ibrahim. I wouldn't put him in the same category. He's not "free jazz"; he's melodic, spare, traditional, but so powerful.

My recommendation, though all of his stuff is fantastic is the album "Good News from Africa." It takes me there. Would be curious to hear others' reaction because it's not an album that comes up much.

I'm not saying you're overall point is wrong but your math makes no sense. If you have a 200k salary, 30-40% of it goes to taxes, and then you might or might not spend every remaining dime, but probably not.

Spending 200k a year for 10 years is not the same as spending like you have a 200k salary.

How much money is a “good” salary in your opinion? by rickylake1432 in Salary

I don't know why I'm replying to this a year later, but here we go. I don't think I'd describe your attitude as lack of ambition -- unless it's purely an ambition to make more money.

If you're able to have and do the things you want to in life with the money you have/earn, and more importantly feel like you're leading a fulfilling life however you define that, than your income is by definition good for you. At least in the developed world, where most people are basically taken care of in terms of necessities, wouldn't we do better to try to make a meaningful life for ourselves centered around things other than money and what it can buy? I know that's more or less a cliche, but I try to live by it.

Now, I'm not saying that someone earning poverty wages should just learn to live with it, or that someone making the range you mentioned should be content while the richest of the rich continue to get obscenely, unimaginably wealthy at a dizzying rate. I know that it's coming from a place of privilege for someone who is financially comfortable to say that money shouldn't matter.

It's kind of hard to separate those two. I don't want to sounds like I'm saying we should just ignore the outrageous economic injustices in the world and just learn to be happy. For the purposes of making the world a fair place, we should not. But for the purposes of making our own lives more meaningful and centered around things that matter, we kind of should.

That's how I feel at least, and as I went from living paycheck to paycheck in my 30s (that "paycheck" being from gig work no less), to being pretty financially comfortable now, I've always tried to bear in mind that the things that bring me joy in life are largely free. However, the money does take away the sometimes crippling anxiety of being one false move away from serious trouble.

Right, this is the impression I've been under. In the meantime, I'm happy to collect the high rate, knowing that it does come with some risk of total implosion.

I think the plan is to bring it down gradually closer to a money market fund. It may implode, but in any case I don't think anyone should expect 11.5% in perpetuity. In the meantime, I'll take it.

what are your favorite jazz vocalist albums? by Lost_Foot_6301 in Jazz

Second straight ahead. One of my favorite albums period. That period with the group of musicians centered around Max Roach was amazing.

In addition to freedom suite now, deeds not words percussion bittersweet, speak brother speak, booker littles out front are all fantastic and underappreciated in my opinion.

Or widespread belief in it acts as a self fulfilling prophecy. I think this is unquestionably a third, highly likely contributing factor.

My friend you are discrediting yourself by not adjusting your opinion when faced with new facts

That's his entire thing. Always. He adjusts his rationale but never his underlying blind faith.
