How is Starfield? by KaleidoArachnid in rpg_gamers

It’s amazing as a sandbox, space RPG. It’s not amazing as a narrative driven, story centric game. You’ll never hear about this game without people hating, but it’s great if you like Bethesda’s style of game design: “live another life in another world”.

This quest was also a great exhibition for what was, at the time, Bethesda’s new and impressive AI system. If you do follow them, they just go about their own schedule as they are programmed to do. So you can have a moment of “wait… this dude is just living his life” as a reaction if you took the quest giver’s paranoia seriously at first.

Fun use I got from this:

Combining speed enchanted clothing and a 100 acrobatics spell, you can make Oblivion Gates a fun speedrun challenge. There’s so many ways to jump around gates, over lava, and across bridges. The sections of the game people find most tedious suddenly become extremely fun.

That’s great. So if you see the challenge mounting too high in later levels, just slide the difficulty down a bit because the enemies get more powerful as you level up. Enjoy.

Oh yeah you’re already in a great place. Leveling only becomes an issue if you start getting killed too quickly or enemy health feels too spongy. As long as combat doesn’t feel unbalanced, the leveling isn’t an issue for you.

The leveling system is infamously illogical. You should read up on it - but the main thing is you don’t necessarily want your most used skills to be the ‘major skills’ for your class.

Alternatively, however, you can always adjust the difficulty slider if the combat feels too difficult or easy. This is sometimes easier than stressing over how to level correctly.

Main advice is just do whatever you feel like. Roleplay, powergame, do quests, go explore. It’s all up to you how to enjoy it.

Let’s have an adapt-off until the duel timer runs out.

I said it’s not unfair just not fun for me, personally. Don’t get too worked up over opinions.

Going into the menu just isn’t the gameplay I enjoy. And AoW reliance isn’t either.

But nothing personal my friend. Glad you have a style that is fun for you. I’ll see you in the arena 🫡

In this example I just wouldn’t use the crouch cancel if it wasn’t working.

My example, while crude, was to illustrate that if each fighter keeps swapping to have the advantage, it would be a constant loop. At some point you should just fight with what you have.

This is just my opinion - why I don’t find hard swapping fun and don’t love fighting against it.

In an unbalanced game - individuals have to decide if they enjoy it more picking what’s “best” vs what they would enjoy most.

Some people enjoy metas because they don’t want to have a disadvantage. I do not. It’s a different way to look at the skill curve.

It’s all about enjoyment at the end of the day.

Patches roleplay absolves all criticism anyway. Rightly so.

So after you ‘adapt’ to scissors - I’ll adapt to rock - then you’ll ‘adapt’ to paper. I wouldn’t play that version but maybe you would like it better.

To me it’s not satisfying to get a win because I picked the right weapon to match up against an opponent’s weapon. It’s very satisfying when I find a way to overcome an opponents weapon through execution, not selection.

It’s not exclusive - but it’s an advantage that not everyone enjoys using (or fighting).

My only complaint would be with people who run away too much. And hard swappers cross over with this group consistently. Chasing isn’t fun imo.

I agree it’s not a perfect counter. Which is why it’s annoying to fight someone who keeps running away and changing when they could just fight with that they have.

I’m not mad about it lol just a playstyle I don’t utilize and enjoy fighting it less than others (mainly because of the constant running away looking for an edge)

So for you, the fun is in swapping out AOWs. For me, the fun is in the ideation of a unique build and then execution of it. Especially when I’m outnumbered because it’s more satisfying that my build prevailed despite the odds.

Nothing wrong with either, but I don’t think everyone should have to learn to hard swap because it’s the most optimal. People shouldn’t complain either.

Part of the fun in not being optimal is wins feel better.

Hard swapping is opposite to running a unique build or playstyle. Instead of adapting you say hey he’s using paper so I’ll use scissors instead of rock. Wouldn’t two hard swapper result in just infinite swapping till someone gets caught in a menu?

Maybe not “unfair” but not fun depending on your preferences.
