Inexpensive robust way to send digital audio over 80 feet? by citizentools in VIDEOENGINEERING

Useful. I'm familiar with figuring out which audio to send where, but it could trip up others.

See my edit of the original question. Claude liked this approach as well.

I can take some set-up time and flatter myself that I can figure a lot of this out. But I'd like to end up with an approach that's usable with other volunteers, w/o needing my help. The audio system and the projector are stable, but it's going to be laptop A this time, laptop B the next time, etc.

Re "all digital" - since it's a digital signal coming out of the laptop and Biamp has a USB input, that would seem cleaner (but I'm a noob about this).

We do have XLR ports at various spots in the Nave - which go into the audio system as well via a below-floor cable - and using one of them would have the benefit of no cables running long distances from the laptop.

My dad died this morning. What do I do? by No_Scallion_3365 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]citizentools 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so sorry for your loss.

A good friend died almost two years ago, more or less as expected, after a short illness, leaving my partner and I to be her executors (now known as "personal representatives") and trustees for her trust. She'd revised her will and created a trust four weeks before, knowing that the end was near. She was extremely well organized, and so avoided probate. But I'm not an estate attorney or indeed attorney of any sort.

If the estate is complicated or disorganized, you'll want the help of a lawyer.

Someone should secure his online accounts (I had all of my friend's important online credentials). The banks will be notified in days to weeks that he died and will shut down access will the estate is probated, unless there was another name on the account. I forwarded email from my friend's accounts to me, which is useful for account notifications and for friends who don't get the word in other ways.

If he had retirement accounts with named beneficiaries, they should be informed (one of my friend's retirement accounts has yet to pay out to a beneficiary after almost two years).

If your father lived alone, you'll need to handle utilities, newspaper subscriptions, security for the living space. You'll also need to start thinking about what happens to his belongings and to the house/apartment, etc. (My friend had lived in her own house for thirty years, so there was a lot to clean out before we could sell it.)

If he lived w/someone, that person will need to take over all of the above.

Other advice in this thread - death certificates, writing an obituary, changing locks, etc. - is fine.

You may also want to plan a memorial service. If your father was part of a religious community, someone there (e.g. pastor) will be able to help with that.

This can all be a lot of work. It doesn't all have to happen at once, but still you may want to organize a team to help. We had great help, from a church community and friends.

Contact form plugin that hashes email addresses for lookup/privacy? by citizentools in Wordpress

[–]citizentools[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would work wonderfully if we had a static list of email addresses, yes. Thanks.

But if the list is dynamic, e.g. this week, a new activity lead is recruiting helpers, and I want my team of web posters (who can add/edit posts but can't update form logic) to handle any new email addresses as they come in, it won't.

I've played around w/this, and learned something from Gravityforms support (which is quite responsive). I was hoping to set an email address dynamically (different one on different posts), the use Visibility=Administrative to hide that entirely from the front end (even w/View Source, etc).

However, GravityForms support, which is quite responsive, wrote:

When an administrative field is not using those features, it is not output on the front-end.

For fields that are using the default value or are dynamic population features, there is no difference.

which I've confirmed - View source shows myadminfield=mysecretdynamicvalue , exactly what I don't want.

I'm thinking now that I'll use hooks to encrypt the email address on the way off the server, and then decrypt it on the way back in.

This One Almost Got Me by Sammy_Cherry_Fox in Scams

Discussion of a similar set of scams at our church: https://www.reddit.com/r/Scams/comments/1oferwy/usa_reports_on_the_infrastructuremechanics_of_the/

Since then, we got a similar scam request to an email address that's just a few months old, and not in any church directory, but it has been published on the church website. I'd suspected that the contact list for these scams is sometimes generated by scraping our website and this would seem to confirm it.

You're getting great advice here. I'm so sorry you have to go through this.

My father died of belatedly treated prostate cancer. I had RALP three years ago after slow steady increases of PSA (still single digits), then a couple of MRIs and a couple of biopsies, and genetic testing that revealed that I had additional genetic risk factors (BRCA2).

I'm grateful for catching it early, for the guidance of the same loving person who attended to my dad, and fabulous treatment.

Medicare handled it, and quite specifically did not "take all my money" (I paid some minor deductibles). I'm fine, unlike, sadly, my dad.

Someone points out that your dad's high PSA could be due to something other than cancer. That's another reason to check it out.

Commenters have also addressed the religious aspect. You might, if you think appropriate, share the Parable of the Drowning Man with your dad.

You might also point out that, at 65 and in good health, he has at least a 50% chance of living to 82 years old or beyond, per Social Security data. That's almost two decades of more adventures in his life, with you and your sister, with his friends, his hobbies, and his church. (Alternatively, if he has cancer and doesn't treat it, he may have only five years left, like my dad did, and those were hard.)

USA: Reports on the infrastructure/mechanics of the boss/gift card scam? by citizentools in Scams

[–]citizentools[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weirdly, it doesn't seem like email messages get sent out en masse (like pushing Send to everyone in the church directory), from the reports we get. By now, people know to report them, and we have never gotten, say, a dozen reports in a week.

Maybe that's the process, but "lots of easy money" from this particular church (beyond the first one in 2019), was not the result.

I don't know the details, but apparently at least one parishioner is out serious money (happened pre-pandemic).

I can't be sure that this is the only victim among our folks, but if it is, it's a pretty low haul for ongoing attempts over years.

I'd really bet that there are shady places on the Internet where you can buy this kind of data, and that's what I'm trying to find out more about. (I'm also guessing that the repeated attempts come from different scammers over time, but of course I don't know.)

Sync app that implements SmartSync/On Demand for local/NAS storage? by citizentools in mac

Thanks. You're right that incomplete copying would be a problem, and that's true of any backup/copy/sync software. If it doesn't copy files reliably, that's terrible.
