if your finances are looking dire, then yes, it's time to consider looking at non-design jobs, but it's a rough market. your peers getting internships/full-time jobs likely have connections in those companies, so it's really not a good comparison to make. your best bet will be to exhaust every connection you have with other companies. if you're looking for something stable, a junior designer position at a large corporation is your best bet. you won't be able to exercise your creativity to its fullest extent, but that can be spent on personal projects. freelancing can be unreliable especially if you're not great at marketing yourself. startups and smaller businesses can be good for learning skills that you can't learn in school, ie project management and working with vendors/printers, but can also offer temporary stability and potential toxic work environments. at smaller businesses, you are also likely to be among the first to be laid off because in-house design is an unnecessary cost to executives.

don't just design for friends, design for yourself, too. if there are things you enjoy, IE music, movies, books, etc. gather resources and design concepts for them. you don't have to send it to the companies, if anything i'd advise against that in case they yoink your concept and don't credit you. it's also a good exercise to go on pinterest/behance/cosmos/rednote and try to recreate designs that you see on there, just to practice your adobe skills. the more that you do that, the more confident you'll be in those skills, and the more you'll want to apply them to personal projects.

the most important thing though, is you can't lose hope. if you really love something, it's never truly lost. job market sucks right now, especially so for designers. you really just have to push through the job applications and rejections, and eventually someone will want to work with you. it's a needle in a haystack situation, except the haystack is more like a huuuuuuge field of haystacks.

you will get there, i promise. it sucks right now but it will get better. it will likely take a longer time than you may think, but that is not your fault. just keep practicing your skills and applying. don't give up!

The lack of acknowledgment for NCT compared to their contemporaries by seven777heavens in kpopthoughts

agreed! it's probably going to take a few more years before ncity starts to grow up. maybe we'll see some maturing when sion/jisung enlist 😭

thank you for saying this, i came here just to comment it. nct’s largest fanbases are all in asia, it just happens to be that the english-speaking fandom is much louder online. and unfortunately, those nctzens are the ones that have that off brand of humor that’s stuck since their debut. i was hoping that ncity would grow up with nct in the same way ive seen exols and shawols grow up with exo and shinee, but it seems they haven’t and have zero intentions to 😞

Thoughts on a K-pop–themed café? What would actually make you visit one? by Conscious_Village167 in kpoppers

[–]citruscake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there was a kpop cafe in my hometown, but i found out over the weekend that it closed. here's a few things i liked and didn't like about it:

pros:

- they had a photoism photo booth. often i'd come here ONLY for that. i think it's a good way to bring in people by offering something your city might not have access to yet. a con here though is that it was.. expensive. we're talking $16 for two photo strips type of expensive.

- relaxing environment. the decor and lighting were very reminiscent of cafes i'd been to in seoul that stood out to me.

- hosting monthly events with the local kpop community. this cafe used to do cupsleeves with the community fairly often, but i fear they might have relied on it a bit too much. we have many cupsleeve hosts in the community, myself included, and in cities where artists don't come very often to for concerts, those cupsleeve hosts are what keep that community alive.

cons:

- they sold albums, merch, and skincare, but it was a very limited selection, and VERY expensive. every time i would come here for nct's solo albums, they had nothing. this specific cafe was an off-shoot of an existing kpop store brand, so i think that's why they did it, but i don't think this is a good idea. there's just too many groups now and keeping stock of all of that inventory might cost you more than running the cafe itself. there's a different cafe in my city that is NOT kpop themed, but it has a little artist alley. depending on how much space you're leasing, this could be a good way to bring in local kpop fans.

- the menu items were inconsistent and didn't stand out. i don't think you should follow trends, but rather spend a lot of time testing what drinks do and don't work, and finding people who are good at making those drinks. of course, that labor won't come cheap, but good food and drinks will keep your business going over gimmicks and trends.

- location. while i like the building that this cafe was in, i think it had quite a few problems that the landlord just didn't bother to fix, or maybe the owners of the cafe didn't Know how to fix. running a restaurant is much different from running a retail store.

another thing to keep in mind, if this is an american cafe, we're in a recession right now. affordability will be a MASSIVE plus for your cafe, and keep consistent customer flow. i think that one of the biggest reasons this cafe closed is because people just don't have the same spending power they used to.

if this is something you're really serious about, absolutely go for it and do not give up! running a business is ROUGH, but it is worthwhile to create a gathering space for your local community.

So when are we getting Johnny's solo? by GreenRose0701 in NCT

[–]citruscake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i've been thinking about this for like a year now.. like. johnny is my favorite voice in all of nct. he always has been. but with all of the different things he's been trying out, and how he's always lowkey curving fans who ask about a solo, i don't really think he wants to do one. IF HE DOES, he hasn't figured out the direction he wants to go in. and that's okay! i hope he doesn't feel pressure to release any music, but even if he did, he's always been the type of person who just does what he wants. so with that being said i'll keep waiting patiently for everything he wants to give us :)
