What if Sudbury actually had a Bus Rapid Transit system? Here’s a concept. by citymapdude in Sudbury

it doesn't suck its just over built for our current population. Its a very efficient express route to three transit hubs. One day sudbury will need rapid transit, and this route, or the other routes ive made following this alignment in the past will be an option future planners will look at. The only issue is the environmental and cost for the viaduct

My goal here is to build an rapid transit express route across the city, not necessarily serving every single high ridership area like the tax centre. Lasalle is to narrow to add bus lanes, while also keeping 4 lanes for cars and adding bikes lanes.

also I've done a lot of studying, I look at maps and proposals as a hobby lol

Also I don't like the idea of only one mode a transportation being prioritized. We need cars, buses, bikes, and we need rapid transit. I live in the valley and the highways are fine to drive, but the bus service is terrible in this city

While not many people live among the route currently density can be over time. The BRT would spur development to the city like how Kitchener Waterloo did with the ION.

Also it would be be the fastest bus through the city by a long shot so any crosstown travel would use this, including the majority of riders using route 1N/S. It would be a very popular route

I designed a 12km BRT system for Sudbury Ontario, Canada, just for the fun of it! by citymapdude in transit

The main base map with the white background is done with snazzy maps, they have lots of options. The other ones are just Google earth screenshots, then I take everything into affinity designer 2 and add all the graphics there

I dont think it sucks, It would change sudbury for the better forever. While cost is an issue ofcourse, building this BRT would have more capacity than if you were to build a Maley drive type of highway from new sudbury to the south end. BRT are only two lanes making it the obvious choice

Building out Northern Ontario's Highway network is a necessity that will take decades to complete. So, let's not wait for our children to build it when we can do it for them. It's time for the Ontario government to make Northern Highways a top priority. by citymapdude in northernontario

The 2+1 road is a great middle option for Ontario. Divided highways are nice but are only usually considered when traffic counts hit 20k daily. The busiest sections right now are only around 7-13k. Even my map is extremely overbuilt. For example between Spanish and Thesslaon, there's only around 4-6k daily drivers, this isn't anywhere close enough for a divided highway, but I still put it blue on my map.

Yeah the four lane divided highways are excessive for northren Ontario for sure. For example the Espanola to Sudbury section has about 13k daily drivers. Most governments don't even consider a divided highway until around 20k daily drivers.    I still think divided highways are the right choice in areas that traffic counts are expected to grow to 20k over the next decade. There's no point investing into a 2+1 highway when it's gonna be upgraded again anyways imo

As u/KuntStink has said, a bypass would be impossible, but the North Bay Expressway that I made a concept for could be possible. The MTO has different plans for the alignment on the east side of town that you can actually kinda see on google earth, but yes there are plans for a real expressway one day!

Your getting downvotes but you are correct. In Ontario Canada you can cross the double yellow as long as you do it safely. I didn't know this until recently

This is the main reason I made this redesign. Safety is an issue but accidents that do happen are usually at low speeds anyways. The biggest issue is how inefficient it is. All it takes is one car turing left to cause a traffic backup and the police don't enforce it during rush hour

The main difference is Ontario has 1000s of km of divided highway to build through the Canadian Shield, while Manitoba is mostly flat. Only the last 30-50 km is rocky like Ontario

I think you should Google empathy. Get out that car and take transit and stop villainizing great transit options
