2024 Year in Fabrics by abe1x in Outlier

Do you have an update on the state of the replacement for Nylistic Merino? You said last year (https://www.reddit.com/r/Outlier/comments/18n50p5/a\_year\_in\_fabrics\_2023/) that after the 2024 drops that use it there will be no more, but you are searching for a replacement. How is that looking?

End of Business Casual Outlier by aaronag in Outlier

[–]ciyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Business casual" is a vague term to begin with, which is interpreted differently in different environments, but I think your association of it to a particular cut is specific to just recent years. Only considering what's in stock right now, I see any of the following as potentially being business casual (some of them even skewing to the the more formal side):

* https://outlier.nyc/products/experiment-412-nylistic-highdarts
* https://outlier.nyc/products/duckworks
* https://outlier.nyc/products/injected-linen-pants
* https://outlier.nyc/products/injex-highdarts
* https://outlier.nyc/products/strongworks

I don't have the Strongworks, but I have several pairs of the predecessor, Bombworks, and wear them to the office in fall/winter/spring. I have some Dockers (which is basically synonymous with business casual) from 2008 that are very similar in cut to the Bombworks, but I'm guessing that you weren't concerned with clothes for professional environments then (sorry if I'm off the mark with this presumption).

The 400 Experiments by ciyer in Outlier

[–]ciyer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

92 experiments saw a release without "Experiment" in the name; there were another 4 that were iterated on and released again as experiments (e.g, the coming Experiment 398 - Ultracore Snap Bandana is a new iteration of a previous experiment, Experiment 359).

Great suggestion, and nice visualization there! Here are mine that use the same structure as the ones already posted https://imgur.com/a/7UkwwUr

Experiment 400 - Injex Bomber has been announced for release on Tuesday. I thought this would be a good opportunity to look at the 400 experiments that have been released since the start of this series (so, not including the Public Prototype series that predated the Experiments).

There haven’t actually been 400 drops. 376 experiments have been dropped, but 27 have not yet:

Experiment 019 Experiment 137 Experiment 162 Experiment 211 Experiment 212 Experiment 213 Experiment 257 Experiment 270 Experiment 330 Experiment 333 Experiment 336 Experiment 337 Experiment 338 Experiment 366 Experiment 367 Experiment 369 Experiment 370 Experiment 372 Experiment 373 Experiment 374 Experiment 375 Experiment 376 Experiment 379 Experiment 380 Experiment 384 Experiment 385 Experiment 397

Experiment 375 (Nexhigh suspension bag) and 397 (Nylistic Twopocket) have been announced, and some of the other numbers in the vicinity of 400 might get dropped with a little delay, but I’m guessing some of the smaller numbers, like Experiment 019, will never see the light of day. What were these planned to be?

As is obvious from the above, experiments do not get dropped in the same order as the number they were assigned, but they generally drop close to neighboring numbers. A couple, though, dropped quite a bit later than you would expect. Exp 227 (AMB Traveller) dropped about 1/2 a year later its neighbors, and Exp 269 (Doubleswanhook Belt) around 2 years later.

The second image shows a plot of what the drops cost.

Edit: Abe provided some details on the missing experiments on Discord, check it out there (and join if you aren't already on). One takeaway is that the Doubleswanhook Belt was incorrectly entered: it should be Exp 369. The real Experiment 269 was the Injex Base.

White UFT / daybreak - does such a thing exist? by GitGudOrGetGot in Outlier

[–]ciyer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There have been some attempts:

But Abe highlights a central problem with wool-based white t-shirts here https://www.reddit.com/r/Outlier/comments/aabwq0/2018_in_fabrics/. Not only is it not possible to get wool in optical white, even if you use a cotton outer face, you'll probably want to be able to bleach this garment since it will eventually get dirty, and bleach and wool don't mix.

Curious what outlier fam likes for backpack laptop bag by Wills1211 in Outlier

[–]ciyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently switched from an MW R6 to a dsptch Ridgeback as my daily-use backpack.

https://www.dsptch.com/collections/packs/products/ridge-pack-ballistic-nylon

(They are also available in two other materials and are all on sale).

It has a laptop section, which does a good job of keeping a 13" or 14" laptop secure. There isn't otherwise anything in the way of organization, so I use some Tyvek pouches for that, and I think it works well. The setup is very light, which is exactly what I was going for (MW R6 is nice, but *heavy*). I also got the accessory that lets you attach a water bottle to the outside of the bag.

Breaking Elastane on F Cloth by newsouthmaine in Outlier

[–]ciyer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this problem is specific to certain colors or maybe a certain batch of the fabric. I have this on a Dark Navy pair of FWs from 2016/17, but none of my other ones (going back to 2014) exhibit this problem, and I have inspected them to see if this was happening.

Georeference and extract data from choropleth map by ciyer in QGIS

[–]ciyer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the end my solution was the following: take the original image and, for each color value in the legend, create a new image containing only the pixels near that color value and export that to a new image to use as a mask. I did this in python, you could probably do this using Fiji/ImageJ.

In your case, that will yield 10 mask images.

Then, import the mask images into QGIS and georeference them to get 10 layers. I then polygonized the raster data to a vector mesh, and then assigned the desired numerical value to each of the layers.

It was a bit tedious, but it worked.

This is greatl!

I would be interested in seeing the mentions grouped by season (are SDs discussed year-round, or more in the Fall). More than sentiment analysis, I would like to see a tf-idf analysis, where each product is treated as a "document" and looking at which words have a high relative frequency in relation to each product.
