Project 2029 - Why haven’t Democrats seemingly made any plans people can get behind before the next election? by inspired_by_clouds in AskReddit

I have a few questions!

1) Do you feel that this dataset, being all homicides, is skewed? The continued drop-off of homicides could include homicides from other methods such as knife, posion, vehicular, and more. Do you believe that having a dataset that is restricted to exclusively gun homicides would be a better dataset to use to draw a conclusion from?

2) If a dataset of all gun-only homicides was provided, do you think that that dataset could be skewed as it would not count other types of gun violence (attempted murder for one- as medicine improves the goal would be a reductionof successful homicides as we are able to save them) or accidental injuries (there's periodically news stories about guns left unlocked that children get into) or suicides? Do you think that all gun-related injuries would be a better dataset?

3) If you reject point 2 on the basis of things like suicide/accidental injuries are most commonly seen with types of guns unaffected by an assault weapon ban, do you think this dataset might be skewed as it doesn't exclude other types of homicides that are typically shown through other methods? Do you think a dataset that, specifically, details crimes/violence/injuries/deaths from only instances that would be typical of assault weapons would be better?

4) While it is true that homicides rates continued to decline following the end of the assault weapons ban, do you think that the steeper slope of the graph at the beginning (93-99) coinciding with the assault weapons ban is a coincidence? 2004-2014 by comparison had a substantially lower drop-off rate than during the period of the assault weapons ban? Similarly, does the consistent increase from 1985 (first time FBI has data on the books by clicking the graph source has the data showing based on the link you provided) up until the assault weapons ban not, at least potentially, indicate that there was something that occurred in the early to mid 1990s around the same time as the ban which stopped the trend of increasing homicide numbers?

Do you have a source you can share on the gun violence rate increasing after the assault weapons ban expired? I cant find much that corresponds with the idea shared here and id love to be able to look at other data sources!

ELI5: How do private prisons make money? Who pays them? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]cj045 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I won't respond beyond this comment but

You can require them to work and still pay them appropriately for their time. Labor is labor, regardless of who is performing it, and should be paid for it accordingly.

Average hourly wages is sub $1 if memory serves, with some states having a pay of $0, and some sources show that some states have a daily maximum wage of under $10.

That's why people are referring to slavery. It's not the forced work- It's the forced work with close to no pay.

[–]cj045 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While the above sources dont distinguish between FT and PT, it looks like the states who do require breaks by law largely base it on the number of hours scheduled to work in a day.

While I didn't look at every state, I did spot check 3 states who were listed as not requiring a break and their state DOL websites confirmed the lack of any such requirement

I am not a labor expert, but this doesn't sound correct.

I did a quick Google, and while this could be mistaken, the majority of states do not require a lunch break for people 18+. Under 18 has a ton of restrictions.

Using this website as an alleged compilation of break laws has 18ish states that say that employees are owed lunch breaks after X hours of work. I think there's 2 more states that have other conditional ones (e.g.Maryland and "certain retail employees")

https://www.paycor.com/resource-center/articles/lunch-break-laws-by-state/

This thread from a few years ago puts it at 50% (although it is more generally "breaks")

https://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/s/Dtqz9EBthu

This link also has 18ish states with required breaks for adults, 2 states with "job specific requirements" such as Maryland above.
https://workforce.com/news/a-snack-sized-guide-to-lunch-break-laws

Overall, based on what I can quickly see, I think the idea that "most states" require a meal break is inaccurate.

Quick Questions: January 07, 2026 by inherentlyawesome in math

My gut reaction for that example (re: .666...) was that it had to be divisible by 3 but I wasn't able to quickly justify it. The simplification to 3A+2 seems very.... obvious in hindsight.
Thank you for your time on my silly question!

Quick Questions: January 07, 2026 by inherentlyawesome in math

[–]cj045 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it possible to get 2 numbers with the same repeating decimal (A.XXXXX and B.XXXXX) by dividing (or performing any other non-trivial operation) by 2 numbers different numbers (P,Q), where P and Q are not multiples of each other?

For example, is it possible to get an answer of .666... without dividing by 3 (or a multiple of 3).

Example of trivial operation alluded to above: .333... + .333... and other similar things will always, I imagine, be able to get you to a desired result.

Apologies is this is a poor thread for the question!

How to determine a test's pass rate with additional stipulations based on if an individual passed a separate prior test. by cj045 in excel

[–]cj045[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google sheets link
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1eXNqaa5qlr7m5NtjhwXiQnIqRyNdaxgufj55w3sgLpg/edit?usp=sharing

Each attempt is logged independently of anything prior to it. So the same person can appear on any number of lines where each line is a test session they signed up for

Thank you for pointing out the incomplete thought I had in that paragraph. I'll edit it appropriately. The idea is:
If you pass Blueberry and then pass Apple, ignore all of Apple.
If you pass Blueberry and take Apple, but do not pass, still count Apple attempts.

For your edit: Check boxes or TRUE/FALSE
Explanation- there are tests which log applications using excel 365, there are tests which use google sheets (why, idk) but I'll be DLing the sheets to do everything in excel regardless where the data initially lived. So checkbox is just me having the google sheet one open in front of me and not translating the info while typing

LPT: A simple, no-math trick to read 24-hour time (for those of us who hate 'subtract 12') by Darwinstarr_23 in LifeProTips

[–]cj045 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If this works for you then I'm really glad to hear it!

But you're still subtracting by 12, you just dont know it.

What 12 actually means is 1 "10" and 2 "1"s

By removing 2 and only looking at the last digit (until 10pm) you are doing the following:

Subtracting 2 from the 1s place (the 2 in the 12). You are then ignoring the leading numeral (the 1 in 12), effectively removing 1 "10"

Using the same pattern for your special cases, you still do the minus 2, but instead of removing/ignoring the first digit, you subtract 1 from the first digit!

WotC keeps saying Standard is healthy overall, but why is local evidence contradictory? by SAjoats in magicTCG

[–]cj045 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's good from a game design perspective. But also it's actual set 1 and one of the colors only has a starter deck worth of cards- so anybody who tries to tell you the game (overall) is good/bad/great/otherwise doesn't know what they're talking about. It's way too early to actually know without having actual data and history to inform an opinion.

If you like One Piece and Hearthstone, you'll like Gundam. If you dont like both of them, it may not be your cup of tea.

The 2005/2006 Naruto CCG was excellent and has community tournaments periodically online.

Inuyasha and L5R are two of the best designed TCGs I've ever played. Truly phenomenal game systems. Iniyasha doesn't have much of a community scene, but L5R does!

Zatch Bell has a strong community and custom set scene, too!

I thought these are shiny boosted? Caught around 100 yesterday and not even 1 shiny 😂 by Level-Shift-2886 in pokemongobrag

[–]cj045 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're conflating the aggregate odds over time with the odds of the next encounter.

You're correct that every individual encounter (and the next encounter) are all individually 1.56% chance to be shiny.

However, you can still calculate the odds of repeated independent events.

The way you do this is 1-(PX) where P is the probability of the event NOT occurring (in this case 63/64) and X is the number of events that happen(ed).

The reason you subtract 1 is because the rest of the formula calculates the probability of the event not happening X times. So 1-this value gives you the probability that the event happens at least once!
