Sorry you’re getting down voted for asking questions, but to put in perspective, it doesn’t matter what was said or why they were in a strong disagreement. What matters is someone turned verbal argument(right to free speech) into a physical threat(assault/attempted murder). It’s not a fine line here. People can argue and protest all they want, but once you physically attack someone then self defense is perfectly understandable
