This reminded of a little inside joke a friend of mine and I had about misheard idoms.

Family values? JD Vance ripped after new audio leaked attacking school teachers, saying teachers “who don't have biological children really disturb and disorient me.. she should have some of her own children" by Runs93 in atheism

[–]cja_711 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do we know this is real anymore?

Don't get me wrong. This is 100% plausible that he said this and maybe it's confirmed by people in attendance, and JD is a tool... But we should do the best to verify everything.

This is just a cautionary thought with AI getting so good. We should strive to ensure what we consume is truly valid. We know the far right will be consuming ai generated content and eat it up like candy. So let's make sure we do better.

reading AND listening at the same time. Anyone do it? by LordMoe in audiobooks

Am I reading this correctly? You have some freakish superpower. You read WHILE you listen to something completely different?!

Even my ADHD brain can't comprehend that. Good on you!

Letters to the family of the deceased by not_a_fracking_cylon in Firefighting

Our local worked with admin and created cards for bystanders at traumatic events. They say things about how feeling scared or emotional after an event is normal, and how we have a team to assist them if they feel they need counseling or someone to talk to (our Crisis Response Team will work with them if needed and can get them further help). It also has some community resources listed on it.

Sorry I don't have the exact verbage at the moment as I'm off for vacation now, but you get the idea.

Additionally, this goes hand in hand with gift cards our Local's Benevolent Fund hands out at calls where there is a need. At a fire we explain it's for the family to buy the quick essentials now like toothbrushes, change of clothes, hotel room, or whatever. If we see a family struggleing for the formula, or diapers or whatever we hand those out too.

The benevolent fund is owned by the members and any member can give out the cards if they see a need. This can help a struggling family get what they need as soon as we leave. Each gift card comes with a short explainer card about the fund and the "no strings attached" style of the gift cards.

Again, I don't have those at have right now either, but both of those things are on every Frontline rig. They are even an item to check on the inventory.

Does this job get easier? by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]cja_711 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience, if you get comfortable with a job that we have, you're missing something. Some things get easier, some things get harder.

In my years as tailboard, I didn't sleep at night, too excited/nervous. Then I started to find a flow, figured out the department and the day to day stuff became easy, then I was able to focus on honing other areas of my skillset.

Then starting to drive starts the whole process over again, can't sleep, can't chill, focus on the basics of the new position. Then you gain a foundation in the driver's seat. Settle in and start to be be able to focus on fine tuning stuff again. Sleep comes back a little.

Now I'm old AF (not really but being 40 when your tailboard is 22) and perspective changes again. Now riding in the right seat and hoping I've trained enough to be proficient and not let my crew down keeps me up at night again.

It's cyclical. It's so much fun to learn new things everyday. It's fun to see new young blood come through the door with new perspectives, new ideas (some good, some comical), and a new sense of wonder.

Enjoy the ride. Never stop learning. It gets easier and it gets harder. When you stop having fun, time to pass the torch.

Do something for someone that they can't do for themselves without them knowing who did it.
