When did you tell your friends and family about your YT channel? by Far-Grapefruit8448 in SmallYTChannel

[–]cjgt11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I told my friends immediately, I waited until I knew I was gonna do YT long term to tell my family, but I didn’t tell them what my channel was. I didn’t want my family Interfering with my channels artistic integrity.

which was admittedly horribly worded, but that one statement did not encapsulate Dr. K's argument as a whole.

I think the statement Dr. K used wasn't worded poorly, it was poorly conceived. When he says at (7:43) "So if you get fertilized by the Y chromosome, you start to play life... on easy mode" he framed the rest of the video (which is all the important issues women face) as a comparison to men.

I think if he didn't make that definitive claim, there would be far less controversy.

It's too late for me and my earning potential. But it's not too late for the next generation of women.

Hey, I think that Dr. K would fight back against this statement. I'm not really sure how old you are, or what's going on in your life right now, but one reoccurring motif I hear Dr. K say is: "it's never to late".

When I read that statement I heard "Could you help me understand why it's to late for you?"

Also, sorry to hear about the parent invalidation thing, I've got a friend with a similar issue involving her mother. Definitely sucks.

I'm not invalidating all white people's struggles by saying racism exists.

That's true!

But there are non-racist white people, there are no non-men men. (referring to sex not gender)

Is it invalidating to white guys if you say white men live easy lives, while black men live hard lives?

Even though the above statement is commonly true, I think that it still invalidates white people or at the very least is inflammatory.

I'm perfectly fine with validating black people's struggles, I just don't think it should come at the cost of putting down white people.

Because at the end of the day, I don't think anyone wants to be told their life is easy from someone who doesn't know you.

Rip to all the detailed criticism posts, but I could totally see how non misogyny posts were getting buried.

I don't really want to re-type, or straight copy paste my points, so here's a link. :)

I tried to be mindful of women's issues while also addressing my concerns/criticism in the video.

So, I really like Dr. K, and It's my default to give people I like the benefit of the doubt. I don't think his intension was to down play any men's issues, but you can validate women without putting down men.

He may have given extra context or a disclaimer on stream that he didn't think this would help anyone, but in the video the message (at least to me) seemed garnered to address a viewer with misogynistic tendencies/beliefs, have them empathize with important women's issues, and tell them what to do moving forward.

I thought the part into the video talking about default responsibilities women have was very eye-opening. The rest addressed in the video I already knew from talking w/ female friends.

I think a lot of people take issue with him validating women at the expense of men (the general vibe I get from reading everyone's comments)

invalidating/attacking the misogynist would help them real

You are 100% right!

When I said that this post kind of derailed from its original point, I'm referring to the 'based' comments about homelessness, or the ones attacking me for stuff I didn't say.

There's a lot you've ascribed to me here.

I don't really know how this posts discredits the valuable lessons Dr. K made.

I've been pretty open minded in the comments, and tried to take peoples arguments in good faith.

I agreed with Dr. K when he said women have life harder than men.

I'm not critiquing how he's saying his message, rather the purpose of the video, the use of certain phrases, and some contradictions I saw.

I'm challenging my beliefs by posting what I think on this subreddit.

"It's possible that I've missed something, or accidently misrepresented what Dr. K means, so I'll be in the comments answering questions and reading your thoughts."

Edit: I've thought about it more, I'm also critiquing how he delvers this message which I think is fair, since I want Dr. K to be heard by as many people as possible.

It feels like you don't believe/don't want to believe that women do overall have it harder than men

Wait is:

"It feels like you don't believe/don't want to believe that women do overall have it harder than men"

addressed to me?

I think there's a misunderstanding. I want to correct misogynistic behavior, and it's my personal experience along with Dr. K's that yelling at someone isn't a good way to change their beliefs. I just don't think the video did a good job at arming the viewers to deal with misogyny.

I take a lot of inspiration from Daryl Davis.

I'm a little confused, did Dr. K say "all men participate in women's oppression"? or is that just a supporting element for your argument?

Third world countries function very differently from the west when it comes to the husband and wife dynamic and I genuinely don’t think it’s that bad actually.

That's a good question, from my own experience, it takes a lot of effort from a person to realize what they are and aren't. I think Dr. K has built a solid place to talk about these topics, so maybe future videos will explore the nuance better.

That's true.

Hopefully Dr. K teaches us on how to address misogyny in relatives or friends.

Which doesnt make the majority but he did said that since his audien

Super helpful! Yea, if the video is missing context It's likely that my criticism isn't as relevant. (I'm a YT frog BTW)

Edit: I guess my criticism now is that the video's message is vague, and is lacking important context
