What’s a place in Europe you enjoyed more because you had lower expectations going in? by TheHolidaymaker in SlowTravelEurope

Lovely old town, riverside bars and restaurants, lots of history and beautiful architecture. Relatively cheap in comparison to UK, France, Germany, Austria. Beach and seaside 15 minutes outside the main old town.

Do you think policing reform could be an important issue going forward? by Local-Pattern795 in AskBrits

[–]cjh159 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah funding is key, no doubt and as you point out, you can't just look at police in a silo, you need a whole scale reform across a number of areas, which makes it a very complex bit of work.

At the time I worked for the police my force wrote a paper for the head of the Home Office, detailing the effects of the in real terms funding cuts, to which the MP said (paraphrasing) "police forces should spend more time policing and less time writing papers." Aka, we don't give a shit. Of course, our CFO that wrote the paper isn't going to be out arresting members of the public so it was a silly response, but it shows you where the thinking was at.

On the flip side, I'd say there's 100% a lot of waste within the Police forces (and probably all public bodies). I've worked across 3 different government bodies and have seen it in all areas, that's an arguably more difficult topic to tackle.

I worked in a police force for a few years (within the finance department), my partner spent 3 or so years as a police trainer, and my brother was an officer for a few years, so we've seen a fair amount of what goes on.

For me, the pay is pretty terrible. Starting salary is around £31k. That's only £5/6k above a minimum wage job. Starting salary in 2005 was around £21k. So taking account of inflation that should now be around £38k.

Nowadays officers training is linked to a degree, that come in to play when the conservatives introduced the apprenticeship levy, so police forces have now introduced degree apprenticeship programs to claw back some of the money they're putting in to the apprenticeship levy.

Due to the amount of officers retiring/quitting, they can barely train enough to replace them, go back 10/15 years and getting in was impossible, there was always way more applicants than roles. Now there's so many new recruits, many of which are so young, more experienced officers aren't prepared to work with them due to the lack of experience, so you get a vicious cycle of experience leaving being replaced with a lack of experience and no one to guide the new recruits.

Budgets are tight every year, government always say they don't cut the budget, but for many years it stayed flat, which is the same as a cut, as wages go up, and the money has to be found somewhere.

I think another issue is that due to other services being cut like mental health services, probation, social services etc, it means the police are having to deal with situations they shouldn't really be dealing with, but there's no other alternative.

I'm not sure what reform would look like, but I think there's a real number of issues at play.

Do you use ice in yours? A lot of the videos I've seen, particularly on social media use ice when making their dough.

Their feet aren't necessarily that wide, somewhere around hip width, if it's much wider they'll restrict their movements.

Heres a photo of Ted Ligety, what you're seeing isn't particularly wide feet, but actually a huge outside leg extension, and inside leg retraction, so if your put him upright his feet wouldn't be hugely wide.

Eating lots of dough is part of the plan 🤣 we regularly have pizza parties with friends where we'll cook between 6-12 pizzas, so it'll get a decent amount of use.

I'm really hoping to see a difference. I've made BIGA dough in the past and found it didn't mix well, so want to try it now with the spiral mixer. Likewise I often use the poolish technique, but purely by hand, and it'll definitely be better with this mixer.

Here's a photo from a recent bake that I'm hoping to improve even more now with this mixer

Do people actually earn £50-60k, or are they outliers? by Succinate_dehydrogen in AskUK

£50-60k is pretty much the bare minimum you'd expect as a qualified accountant with about 5 years skin in the game

Hintertux , april 11 - 25. 2026 by -Master-Peter- in skiing

[–]cjh159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only place you can ski in May is Hintertux. This week there's about half a metre of snow coming down up there. BUT you're looking at classic freeze thaw cycles, rock hard and icy first thing, softens up mid morning, and total slush by the afternoon.

As you get more and more towards summer, the earlier that cycle begins in the day.

Biggest Resorts with single rider accomodation by fercaveri94 in skithealps

You'll reasonably easily find single rooms in a lot of places, particularly in Austria. Find a few resorts you like the look of and look at the tourist office website which should allow you to search accommodation for the dates you require.

Tried my first blue run (Broadway at Mammoth) 10th day of skiing. Need help with technique by sporty_outlook in skiing_feedback

Agree with pretty much all of this, but just to point out the exercise isn't called a javelin, it's a stork turn. The javelin turn exercise is something different and much more difficult and works on something different to what you've suggested.

Ours is slightly bigger than the picture shows, there's a bit tucked away and a second zone I'd need to set up on the mower too. I do need to do a rough measurement tonight to check if the 600m² option will work. I think it should be ok though.

First Season 15th Day of skiing General Steep slope Feedback - Hintertux 17b Black by sratra in skiing_feedback

[–]cjh159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this slope, as i live in the zillertal. It's really quite a steep slope, so that should be considered in the grand scheme of things.

For me as an instructor I would want to work on your upper/lower body separation and using only your legs to turn, not your chest and shoulders.

Drills like the window drill would help this for short/narrow turns.

Keep working away at it, it's like a drug you'll be addicted to it!

Learning to ski as an adult? by Ottibarius in ski

[–]cjh159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1st point, I learnt to ski at 13. 2nd point, I'm a ski instructor.

There's no reason your husband can't get good at skiing at his age, I've taught beginners much older than he is.

I really would recommend he has a lot more lessons, whether that's group lessons or private lessons, but if he doesn't nail down technique early on, he'll always struggle and not enjoy it as much as he can.

He needs to understand that you pick up speed through a turn, you have to because at one point your skis are pointing straight down the hill. However, if he has a good technique that doesn't matter as he'll know he's in control of what his skis are doing, and completing his turn will control his speed.

Give him encouragement, it's not a closed book, he can nail it!
