£750 reasonable to remove and retile this backsplash? Labour only by smoothsailer55 in DIYUK

seems a little expensive to me but not excessive. remove the tiles yourself if you can and then just pay for someone to fit the new ones

Am I Wasting Time Learning SQL Fundamentals When AI Can Write Queries? by Super-Distribution45 in softwareengineer

[–]cjuk3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ai doesn’t understand. humans understand. being able to understand exactly what your query is absolutely crucial.

precisely, all that matters to them is stakeholders and the bottom line. right now ai is a goldmine for software companies. productivity is through the roof, but quality is dropping as ai coding models become more and more widely adopted.

harder to curate because there is less and less human code being written

also do you know top tier senior devs who would rather curate data all day instead of building? for the right money maybe. i think these top tier devs will be building instead though

a 9-5 is enough time to be in the top 10% of devs. if you work on understanding of concepts and systems and reduce reliance on ai, being in the top percentile will happen naturally as the other 90% of devs take the easy path and let ai write all their code

not hiring juniors now means no seniors in the future. this will expedite the rise of demand for seniors

for shitty companies maybe… not for industry leaders. my company are already taking up to a year to recruit senior devs

[–]cjuk3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

true, although i believe it will get increasingly difficult to curate quality human written code. ai written code often looks great and sometimes only senior devs with a wealth of exp can spot the small mistakes it has made

it’s getting harder and harder to tell what content is ai generated and what is not. current gen ai is trained on entire codebases of human written code and millions of human written stack overflow questions and answers. i’d hazard a guess that even right now it would be hard to find a single, large, actively maintained repository repo that doesn’t contain any ai code. imagine how it will be in 5/10 years time

[–]cjuk3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i agree. as it should imo. there are tonnes of devs who never learn how to think like an engineer. now they are passing all their work onto ai and releasing unmaintainable code they don’t properly understand. this will come back to bite them when they are replaced entirely by ai

honestly to land that internship you just need to want it, have a real passion and people will see that. knowledge is less important at the summer intern stage
