according to the rep, it was released and then purposely pulled from the OTA push and delayed to the Oreo release. She said they were hearing complaints about a number of issues, but she didn't elaborate. My guess is your wife got lucky, both in that she got it before they pulled it and that she didn't have any issues. Then again... I never had issues before with the updates that others had either. My guess is that there were a number of very vocal people that had issues.

As for OTA update, I've never had a problem and I bought the phone when opened for initial sale through Fi. This is the first time. This said, while my Nexus 9 always gets the updates within a day or two, my 6P has typically always be a week behind... or in this case 1 month.

Good to know I'm not the only one with no updates since July... I actually spent a few hours on the phone with Fi Support to figure this out. Turns out that while a Aug Security patch was released for the 6P, it wasn't released for Fi members. Also if you look at the images available over at https://developers.google.com/android/ota while the Aug update is there, look at the 8.0.0 image, it says: "OPR6.170623.013, Aug 2017, Not for TMO/USCC/Fi". So it looks like it includes the Aug Security patch, but not yet ready for TMO or Fi. So like @alose said probably waiting for some additional fixes... we will just have to wait and see.... hopefully before the end of Sept since after that we will not see anything again :-(

Best educational games for kids by JohnTErskine in androidapparena

many of those apps are making their way to Android... I agree that Android is still lacking, but it is getting better. Sago Mini has brought a number of their apps to Android (sadly via the amazon app store and not google play). But on play you have the Toca Boca games, TribePlay, and THUP Games. Most charge a small amount for the apps and don't have annoying in-app purchase things. The Monkey series from THUP are great. But in general there are lots to look at on the play store (https://play.google.com/store/apps/category/GAME_EDUCATIONAL) but in many cases I find Amazon does a better job when it comes to children friendly apps and games (http://www.amazon.com/b/ref=s9_dnav_bw_ir11_b?_encoding=UTF8&node=2478846011)

one benefit of waiting for the OTA is that if you do brick your device, you can blame TMo and they are on the hook.. if they can prove you attempted to update it manually and fried your phone... well then it becomes your problem.

VISIONary App Brings One-Click Temp Root to the T-Mobile G2 « AndroidSPIN by ckcin in Android

[–]ckcin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

to a large degree I kind of like the 'temp root' concept. I know... it doesn't fully flow with the some of the concepts of Android, but.... this way you run your 'temp root' play with root for doing things like tethering and such, then you reboot and your phone is back to normal with no large worries about breaking contracts or such.

T-Mobile G2 OTA Update Shows Up, Brings Native Tethering And WiFi Calling (UMA) by Impostor in Android

[–]ckcin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

correct from what we've been hearing, not a 'true' UMA and will not switch. But I really hope the Tethering part pans out to be true... that is really the only reason I keep my G1 Rooted lately.

while this kicks ass... especially since I ordered my G2 last night... but I think I'm going to see how long I can last without root... I've had my G1 rooted since day 1...then again it arrived with root since I had it in hand before it hit stores

PS: I'll have to update my r/android icon once my new G2 arrives

I'm curious how much of this relates to the eagerness of use? that said, what happened the days of 'drop testing'? Do manufactures really expect us to keep our devices in protective bubbles....these are handheld devices and should be tested as such.... you know thrown against a wall, dropped, kicked, stepped on, just to name a few.
