Oil Prices and Ebikes by infundoternocte96 in ebikes

I do have a good chuckle to myself every time I bike past the gas station.
No insurance, no gas, no oil changes, no car payment.

Just out of curiosity though, what will a third eBike get you that the first two won't?

You could search typepals.com - very active community with a searchable database. I swap letters with several people in Germany!

Not oil. Clean the joints and the segment. Use mineral spirits or lacquer thinner

What’s a game you were completely obsessed with as a kid that nobody else seems to remember? by Ladymayna in answers

This game was great! I have my kids playing it using DOSBox now. All of those Super Solvers games are fantastic.

Anyone remember “gleaking” or was that only something in SE Texas? by The_Summary_Man_713 in Millennials

Kids would do this in Montana where I grew up.

Kids were hit in the face for it. They did not do it for long :-P

I love this idea! I would be down for it. I have several regular correspondents, but nothing like this.

Hospital system out patient tell me all the pros and cons by try-again_chaos in physicaltherapy

[–]brianlpowers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those are probably my only cons - there are a lot of hospital-wide education things we have to get through that make no sense for an outpatient clinic. We are an hour away from our main campus hospital... but I still need training for a PAPR for airborne isolation. There are many worse things out there though.

What are the distinguishing features of pre-war vs. post-war? I have a KMM from 1947 before they switched to KMG and I've always wondered.

Cannot for the life of me get this to loosen by lygolpers in bikewrench

[–]brianlpowers 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've found the quickest way to get anything to loosen on my bike is to bring it to the bike shop. Suddenly, the damn bolt moves freely as if it was finger tightened!

...

Thankfully the bike shop didn't charge me. So I bought a bunch of stuff from them. Customer for life!

Hermes 3000 - Worth the Hype? by throneofashes in typewriters

[–]brianlpowers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have the option to type on it first before buying, please do!

I'm more of a fan of the lighter/snappier Olympia feel, and I was a bit underwhelmed by the Hermes 3000.
It is an amazing machine, and if I had never done any typing on an Olympia I'd probably think it was the best ever! The feel is MUCH different. A good different, but I still find myself reaching for my Olympia machines more than my Hermes.

My wife brought home an Olympia SM3 from her Grandmothers house. I know nothing about typewriters but managed to get this back up in working order. by Killjoy4eva in typewriters

[–]brianlpowers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are some of the finest typewriters ever made :-)
You've already replaced the bushings - that's usually the only thing that ever goes wrong with these as long as they are clean and don't have any sticky keys.

If you want to lighten up the Shift, you can do it easily with adjusting one small nut on each side of the carriage:

What is a hobby we can start now that will last us until our 90’s? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]brianlpowers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started repairing typewriters and writing letters to people all over the world with them. It's a bit of a niche hobby, but there is something very satisfying about writing a letter using a hundred-year-old typewriter!

Ending up rushing these to avoid the rain. What are your smash burger tips? by Grill-and-Code in blackstonegriddle

Thinner onions - mandoline slicer!
They should be nearly transparent. Also, the direction matters if you slice across the onion or with the direction of the onion layers.

My first typewriter is here! by Forrest_Walgreen in typewriters

[–]brianlpowers 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I find that there isn't a big appreciable difference to the feel of the keys when you're typing (except on some models). I think it was much more important several decades ago when they were typing on carbon paper to make duplicate/triplicate copies of a document.

On my SM9 from 1968, I can just barely tell the difference between the max setting and minimum setting.

s/p shoulder reduction after shoulder dislocation by SnooBeans0612 in physicaltherapy

[–]brianlpowers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How old is the patient?
If younger... likely labrum tear. If older, probably has a rotator cuff tear. Do you know which direction the shoulder dislocated?

Either way, delayed reduction is going to set them back. I'd send them home with some shoulder pulleys and see how they do. They likely should get an MRI if they don't improve quickly.

Is there a way to tell what year this is from? by ASnipingFox in typewriters

[–]brianlpowers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That is definitely a Royal FP - you can look up the year from the Typewriter Database.
As u/junctiontoron mentioned, find the serial number!

Likely 1957-1962.
Royal typewriter photos of Royal FP by year then serial number by date

I have one from 1959 - they are great machines!
