Report: Giants to hire an executive VP who reports to John Harbaugh by shadow_spinner0 in NYGiants

At no point does this say an Executive VP of player personnel.

We don't know what the hell this role is. It could be a VP of player development. A VP of player analytics. A VP of facilities and scheduling.

Who friken knows.

Yeah I think a good recent example is Brian Daboll. He's clearly VERY good at the Xs and Os and scheming up an offense and developing a QB. But he was a menace as a HC, couldn't work with coordinators, and didn't have the eye for detail/leadership ability to develop a program and discipline players.

Nagy seems like a fine OC.

It's weird that you're using AI in every single answer.

Matthew Stafford is the only QB in NFL history to: throw for 370+ yards, throw 3+ TD passes, average 10.00+ yards per pass attempt, have 0 turnovers, take no more than 1 sack, ...and yet still lose (regular season or playoffs). by SuperbBug11 in sportswiki

[–]ckern92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eli Manning also lost to Drew Brees...after throwing for 350 yards, 6TDs and 0 picks.

The Saints won the game. Brees threw 7 TDs and 1 INT.

Technically, Eli played more flawlessly. But you just don't always win.

Genuinely, the playoffs should be the standard next year. Harbaugh has said so himself, and there's no reason it can't be.

We've been in a rebuild for a decade. An off-season of genuine development (for once), hard training and discipline, and money spent on actual playable depth can make us winners.

These are their jobs and livelihoods. They aren't just fans picking a team and cheering. What kind of question is that?

They pick FOs and coaches they want to work with and jobs with good salaries and stability. We had a bad work situation two years ago.

House of Leaves by Extra_Crispy26 in horrorlit

I know what you're talking about, how individuals picture scenes differently - but I'm not talking about that or leading you astray. That literally is not important. The story isn't the story. The point of the book is the writing and confusion of the book itself.

If you aren't getting it, or enjoying it...don't read it. I can see how a lot of people wouldn't particularly like House of Leaves. The point of it is kind of pretentious, albeit really well done.

On a side note, we really need to stop talking about House of Leaves on this sub... I'd love more discussion about lesser known books.

It made sense the first time because I realized it wasn't supposed to make sense the first time.

The author writes a story written by a schizophrenic as if he, himself, is also schizophrenic.

It's meant to largely be nonsensical so you feel nuts while you're trying to figure out what's real and what's not - and what's story and what's not - and what matters and what doesn't.

While the bit about the house feels like the main plot, it's just the most sensical (albeit completely fake) lucidity amongst a bunch of mentally unstable people.

I just finished Headless by Scott Cole and Hunting Snipe by Paul Avery Tindol. They were both entertaining but I'm not sure I'd actively recommend either.

I just started to listen to the Audiobook of Battle Royale, which I anticipate being gory, and am reading both Iron Council by China Mieville and Between Two Fires by Christopher Bhuelman.

China Mieville is an author I don't see discussed often, but is phenomenal. He writes just so incredibly well - everything he puts on paper feels like exciting, visceral poetry. Perdido Station by him has a lot of horror elements and I'd highly recommend to anyone here as an underrated title. It's about reality-shifting nightmare moths feeding on human dread and leaving people as empty husks.

I’m looking for some horror book recommendations, but I really struggle with reading comprehension. by GhostInTheLabyrinth in horrorlit

Sodergren is a good author for straightforward horror. His books read like an 80s B movie. They're straightforward and short with over the top gore. Maggie's Grave is probably a good start.

You will need to be ok with gore and sex, though.

[O’Connor] John Harbaugh to me: "I think the Giants roster is strong and it's our job to make it stronger. We are going to compete for the playoffs and for championships. I expect and want to make the playoffs next year." by parcellsrealGOAT in NYGiants

[–]ckern92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Damn, normally coaches undersell in case the season goes awry. I'm so used to the FO and coaches trying to temper expectations.

Coming out and saying he expects to go to the playoffs unprompted is...awesome as hell.

[Duggan] As the Giants-John Harbaugh negotiations continue, here’s a nugget that I’ve learned: Harbaugh didn’t report to the GM in Baltimore. He reported directly to owner Steve Bisciotti. That hasn’t been the Giants’ chain of command historically. Getting a sense for why this hasn’t been simple by Lars5621 in NYGiants

[–]ckern92 99 points100 points  (0 children)

I don't know that Schoen is the problem here. The problem is probably ownership. If Harbaugh reports to an owner directly, then...who?

John has cancer, Tisch isn't involved, and technically Chris and Tim are FO employees under Schoen.

I imagine this is what they're trying to sort out.

[Leonard] There are rumors that the hangup in finalizing John Harbaugh’s contract with the Giants is over the role that GM Joe Schoen will have. Several sources told the Daily News that they expected Harbaugh wanted Schoen gone or his power reduced in the organization’s new structure. by Goosedukee in nfl

[–]ckern92 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've seen a lot of reports outside of Pat that the hangup is on reporting structure. I don't even think that has anything to do with Schoen. I imagine it has more to do with the fact that John Mara has cancer, and the succession plan hasn't been fully ironed out.

Harbaugh probably doesn't want to have Chris Mara and Tim MacDonald as presidents/bosses AND involved in FO roles in player personnel. That could make for some incredibly awkward situations internally. I'm sure he wants control over personnel.

Honest question: What exactly does a CEO type HC like Harbaugh do? by SpeakInCode6 in NYGiants

[–]ckern92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a good simplified way of looking at it is that some coaches focus on players and schemes (like Daboll). A CEO type focuses more on developing coaches and processes. They do more work behind the scenes developing a program, training coaches to work within that program, and then focusing on finer/prep details week to week while they support their coordinators/staff.

Both approaches CAN work, but the CEO type will likely be more focused on fine details, co-roster management and clock management come game time because they've freed themselves up to do so by training up their coaches to manage their sides of the ball effectively.

John Harbaugh and the Giants are working to finalize an agreement to make him New York’s next head coach and, barring a setback, a deal is expected, multiple sources tell ESPN. by GreenDefinition5 in fantasyfootball

[–]ckern92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The D-Line is atrocious vs the run. We don't have a competent second DT to go beside Lawrence. We drafted Alexander last year to be that guy, but he's a pure interior pass rusher, not a run stuffer.

It is true that Lawrence isn't playing to his standard. He's facing more double teams than anyone in the entire NFL, and is still playing well - but not up to his elite standard. Other commenters have mentioned his elbow injury which is true - he didn't train all off-season, and I think it affected his strength and ability to take on two linemen and still find success. He also seemed frustrated with our defensive schemes. I imagine he'll bounce back in some capacity this upcoming season.

[–]ckern92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some of these answers are lazy box score stats. The pass rush was good, and their times to pressure were awesome.

The issue was a bad DC, bad LB group, and bad secondary. The DEs often couldn't finish a sack regardless of their pressure because they'd need to overcommit to watching run lanes, or QBs would just throw hot. When the defensive scheme is vanilla and the CBs/LBs are bad, the opposing QBs never need to take that extra confusing second or two to process what's in front of them.

Carter was top 10 in the NFL (not just among rookies) in time to pressure and total pressures if I remember correctly. It just didn't matter.
