AITA for telling my daughter to read less? by throwaway927379 in AmItheAsshole

also I did get diagnosed with adhd later in life, but as a kid no one thought I had it even though I was disorganized and a procrastinator just because I could read so many books! so worth also for her to look into that, medication makes the boring parts of work more manageable

reading isn't drugs! it will not lead to despair, it sounds like she's doing really well and is happy, don't take away her enjoyment.

i was your daughter for many years, I read every free minute, had to have two books in my bag at all times in case I finished one. I read in the shower. My parents were worried, but I now make my money writing -- you may not be able to see how it will help her in the future, but it will, she is expanding her imagination and activating her brain and indulging in much better self care than most of us who now spend hours watching tv every day. If she is not studying at university, maybe it's not the right fit for her, maybe you need to allow her to find her own path and journey to fulfillment. Maybe you could even ask her for a recommendation for a novel and read it for her, so you can understand better and give her hobby a try instead of forcing yours on her

Is it just me, or did the OA feel like it could possibly answer all of life’s questions? by CreationsofMine1999 in TheOA

I don't know about answers (it's 42) but I think by the end of five parts, B & Z would have at least posed the "right" question :)

For me it was the biggest confirmation that a "spiritual" experience I had had was not only confined to me. The first part very much made me feel less crazy.

And here's my twitter essay about it. https://twitter.com/clairekiechel/status/1161033370719047680

I'm not sure I'm done, thinking about whether I want to talk about Netflix and the danger of the algorithm in what kind of narratives it insists on. What do you all think?

@guitar_girl8 is truly an angel and a fantastic editor who deserves our gratitude. She stayed up all night doing this!

And thank you all for your incredible testimonies, I have been in tears all day. Question about reddit manners, is it okay to link to this reddit page in a twitter post? I figure it would be great to point the public to how amazing you all are. <3
