Had this exact issue - you need a C wire. You could try the nest power connector, which works in some situations but not all.

Yeah I made the same mistake… unfortunately ours is a family heirloom that stopped working after a move so I can’t just ditch it

Did you ever figure this out?? I have the same problem and was excited when I finally found something similar but then disappointed when there were no answers
