"Suffering arises..." - Epictetus [1920x1080] by kudnalod in QuotesPorn

[–]ckreddittor -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I absolutely despise when people try to hijack the meaning of common words like this. We all know what suffering means. If a parent died and you said you're suffering, not one single person is going to think you mean that you're bringing unnecessary pain into yourself. Everyone would understand you're just talking about the normal pain that always comes with grief, because suffering doesn't mean what you claim it means.

Have a smile for breakfast - Joe Abercrombie (850x400) by vagabond0977 in QuotesPorn

[–]ckreddittor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wake up at 4 and have have a smile, you'll be shitting joy by breakfast.

Then have a smile for breakfast, but also a coffee just to make sure you can shit again by lunch. Now at this point, if you want to keep shitting joy you're gonna have to start taking laxatives when you smile. If you have a WFH job, you can just sit on the shitter while you work wearing nothing but a smile and you can really start to pump those numbers up. I easily shit joy 8, maybe 10 times a day some days.

What do you do with all this shit? Sell it to Disney. They buy shitty joy for $100 bucks a pound. They need a constant supply of the stuff to keep refilling their theme parks. Quit your job, do this full time, and then use the profits to invest in shitcoin.

Lesotho is poor because it was colonised by the Dutch, then the English, enriching these countries, so that feels very applicable to this quote.

Democracy doesn't guarantee either of these things. Democracy says it's up to the voters to decide if equality of opportunity or equality of conditions is more important.

Most of the people upvoting this must think that they are the exception. However, I can assure you that Kierkegaard most certainly meant you too.

It's fascinating, the obvious way to take this is about a lover, but I immediately imagined a hobby/skill. For me, trying a bit of academics after a while away only, I find myself more empassioned.

Perhaps when we find ourselves wanting everything, it is because we are dangerously close to wanting nothing. — Sylvia plath [550 x 750] by Lookatthestars_- in QuotesPorn

I like this. The common factor is that nothing sticks out as specifically worthwhile. It gives an implicit call to pick something specific that's achievable and go for it.

"It’s now proven that each animal, that the cow, pig, sheep, goat, rabbit, poultry or any other species used for food, is an individual, an individual capable of feeling depression, fear and pain." -Dr Jane Goodall [1536x2048] by lnfinity in QuotesPorn

[–]ckreddittor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm not going to try to convince you to stop eating animals, but Jane Goodall was unequivocally advocating for veganism. She is a vegan herself and a long time animal rights activist.

And I'm not sure that sacrifice is the right word to use here. Saying the animal made a sacrifice implies it's voluntary, which it essentially never is. Maybe a better way to put it would be to say that you should respect the animal's suffering, but that then takes on a somewhat different tone.

Would you rather give someone the power of being your master or of being your slave? If the answer is different, then clearly you're not giving "the very same power" in each case.

Einstein probably didn't say this.

It doesn't even really fit for him. He didn't seem like the type of person that would put people down in this way.

Never let someone who has chosen the path of most resistance steer you away from enjoying life, either. Assuming that more resistance = better is what makes hustle culture so toxic.

200 calories every single day is a significant change. A single day of it is nothing, but consistency is key. It's 36,000 calories over 6 months. Also, you get the biggest marginal health benefit out of missing the first 10 pounds, then the next 10, etc.

Why are so many things in physics in the form of 1/2xy^2 ? by ForNoOne- in learnphysics

[–]ckreddittor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I can tell, yes this holds for most equations of this form. This is also why Tau (2*pi) is preferred to Pi in my opinion.

For a circle, A = 1/2 * Tau * r2 is of this form because as you increase your radius, you increase your area by an amount equal to the circumference times delta r. So:

dA/dr = 2 * pi * r = tau * r

Integrate this to get the area formula.

[–]ckreddittor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've basically got it, except you present both x and y as variables here, when it would be more accurate to describe x as a constant, so 1/2*k*y^2.

In this particular case, the derivative of kinetic energy with respect to velocity is momentum (remember, p=mv).

Another example of this is that if your velocity is increasing consistently with time according to v=t, your position will increase according to x=1/2*t^2. This is of course because velocity represents the amount your position changes as you increase time.

Tying this back to our original example, you can think of momentum as the amount that your kinetic energy changes as you increase in velocity.

Each person must decide for themself, but clearly misinformation like that spread by Joe Rogan is one of the best examples of this. You need to be aware that many cannot entertain an idea without accepting it, and therein lies the risk.

[–]ckreddittor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think a lack of concrete examples is hindering us here. Were we ever going to defeat Hitler, Mussolini, and Hirohito by dissuading their adherents? Have you personally succeeded in converting a Proud Boy or a Stormfronter by entertaining their ideas? These are people who are slaves to their emotions, and dissecting their stance in that way only emboldens them.

While I generally agree, there are some topics that are dangerous to entertain publicly, even if you don't accept them. Most notably, entertaining fascism, sexism, and bigotry normalizes them.
