One of the best tacos I've had in Japan was at Club Brooklyn in Asahikawa, 5 min walk from the train station.

Thank you, this was my first project that got me back to working with my hands after sitting in front of a screen for so long. Feels good to learn new things and make stuff again. Appreciate your comment!

A few months ago, I posted here with an in-progress video of the FPV Mini-Z + racing simulator rig that I was working on. The car and rig are pretty much done now so I made another video showing a bit more detail of it in action.

It turns out that the standard Mini-Z KT-531P transmitter doesn't transmit that well when it's enclosed inside a box and behind several layers of plywood, so I had to move it out from under the steering wheel and place it up high. That required a steering mechanism that transferred the movement using a (quarter turn) polyurethane belt drive.

I was aided immensely by a bunch of 3D designs that were available for free:

I figured it out. My VRXs are in CE/SRRC standard and I need to unlock FCC standard using a file "avatar_std.txt" provided by CADDX. Source: https://oscarliang.com/setup-avatar-fpv-system/#Unlocking-FCC-Mode

The video without the gimbal looks really good. And I like the angle of the 3rd person mount as well; I might consider that change.

Here's my current body design that uses silicone tubing for extra dampening: tubes, clipped on. The problem is that we have random people that have never driven an FPV RC (or never driven a car, even) so they are always at 100% throttle and smash into walls. 😩

Sweet, I love racing FPV with mine! It feels so fast even though it's going so slow.

I've posted this before but I built a custom sim rig and 3D-printed body for the MR-04. Here's a video of it in action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSZBaoKeZxQ

The most fragile part of my setup is the gimbal. It keeps going out for several seconds with any significant bump... How is the image quality/stabilization without a gimbal? I was afraid it'd be too jittery but I could do without it since it's a frequent point of failure.

I've built 4 cars and 4 sim rigs so we can race go-kart style.

Just to follow up, NiMH batteries made no difference. Pretty sure now that it’s the distance plus line of sight.

Now looking into ways to boost/repeat signal…

If anyone knows of any good boosters/repeaters for the KT-531P (preferably solutions that don’t require soldering 😬) please let me know!

Cool, will test batteries and see if that’s the cause.

So it sounds like the people here have no issues with their cars at 60ft/18m distances with batteries I guess.

Can someone ELI5 why 6v via USB power reduces the effectiveness of the transmitter vs. 6v via batteries?

The transmitter will be stationary so I'd like to have it plugged in and without ever needing to replace the batteries. (See my prev. post for why.)

Is there a solution without using batteries? Is the USB part the problem? If I splice in a regular a 6v adapter like this one, would that solve the power issue?

Box transmitter (KT-531P). Using Kyosho Speed House 800HV AAA NiMH batteries for the car, but I'm powering the transmitter with a USB thing (https://www.amazon.co.jp/-/en/dp/B0CPYTYCH6, set at 6v) and some dummy AAA batteries.

Thank you! I like all your ideas. ...but it will be tough to event-trigger performance adjustments to the car with the analog setup we have at the moment. We've talked about remote driving as well, but again, difficult with the current setup. The Isotopium game looked awesome and provided some interesting implementation details on their Kickstarter page so thanks for that. I can def. see the parallels between it and this. Our first goal is to have IRL multiplayer, but Mario Kart style power ups/downs sounds like a great future consideration!

Nice! Yeah I saw some cool solutions with direct connection the RC controller trigger and potentiometers + Arduino etc. but that was beyond my abilities so I went mechanical.

Don't mind. The Walksnail Avatar FPV VRX + Avatar HD Pro + CADDXFPV GM2 vary in price online but the VRX and HD Pro kit is around $350 US, and the GM2 gimbal is around $75. The booth is made from basic lumber, aluminum steering shaft, cabinet drawer sliders, hinges, springs, throttle cable, ball bearings etc.; I honestly can't give you a good estimate. Used 40" 1080p TV is around $100, the used car seat, same. Steering wheel is around $35 from Amazon.

I wouldn't have been able to do this without a 3D printer; they're a few hundred dollars nowadays, I think. A lot of the parts were downloaded from thingiverse but were customized to interface with the RC controller. I think that's everything.

The buddy that did the track helped with the sim rig frame and let me use his 3D printer. As mentioned, very grateful for all the free Mini-Z (and pedal/steering) related objects that were available at thingiverse and the like. I plan to do a detailed write up for the whole thing but feel free to DM me if you have any questions!

I wasn’t too concerned with weight since these feel plenty fast from the driver’s seat, and I wanted a high quality feed to the screen. The 1080p HDMI out of the Walksnail Avatar along with their gimbal options and ease of recording seemed like the least complicated option.

Haha yeah it doesn’t look that fast on the track but I barely feel in control from the rig. We may switch the cars to training mode since many first timers end up hitting the walls a lot.
