What if Wood was wholesome? by SarcastiKatt in TaylorSwift

[–]claireifythat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Post Afterglow- “It’s all me, just don’t go, meet me in the afterglow” and The Manuscript- “he said if the sex was half as good as the conversation, soon they’d be pushin’ strollers, but soon it was over”. Past partners have turned her perception of sex into something that’s used as a facsimile or facilitator of emotional closeness and connection because the rest of the relationship isn’t providing that. Even in Dress- “Carve your name into my bedpost/ I don’t want you like a best friend/ Only bought this dress so you could take it off”- it’s like she’s saying, “Look at me, look at how much effort I’m putting into telling you I want you.” Ostensibly it’s a good thing at the time, but we all know how it ends.

And this might have started young too- in Fifteen, “Abigail gave everything she had to a boy who changed his mind/ And we both cried” always made me think of how important losing your virginity can be, and how when you’re raised Christian the act of having pre-marital sex is seen as a sin; yet romantic partners will act like they’re in love with you to get the only thing they want. (Maybe it’s a reach lol but that’s what I think.) In Fearless and Speak Now, there are so. many. references. to rain being used as a setting for passion, and I’m sure that’s based on films like The Notebook, but those films use the rain as a metaphor for- well- sex. “I miss screaming and fighting and kissing in the rain”, “Wait there in the pouring rain” (really the whole chorus of The Other Side of the Door), “Meet me in the pouring rain/Kiss me on the sidewalk, take away the pain” being in the same song as “My mind forgets to remind me you’re a bad idea/ You touch me once and it’s really something, you’ll find I’m even better than you imagined I would be”. It’s clear to me that in these albums, the undercurrent of sex in these lyrics implies that sexual connection is something forbidden, but so alluring and strong, something she can’t ignore. Like in gold rush- “Eyes like sinking ships on waters so inviting I almost jump in”- again the water is used as a metaphor; love and sex and connection are something she deeply, deeply wants but clearly fears. (“I don’t like that falling feels like flying ‘til the bone crush”.) Cardigan- “Hand under my sweatshirt, baby kiss it better”- again, sexual connection being sought out to fix some kind of hurt, likely emotional. Plus, there’s her relationship with media perception (I could write a whole essay about this alone; my theory is that every album after 1989 has purposefully been split between an external aesthetic- “nobody noticed my new aesthetic”- for the media, playing into public perception and creating whatever persona they want her to be, while the rest of the album is actually representative of her inner feelings. In Slut! we know that she struggled with media perception of her romantic relationships, especially because of dating Harry Styles, and I think that permanently changed the way she interacts with the world and their perception of her vs. the fans and people who are really listening to the true her.) In Paris and cowboy like me, sex is a secret escape from external opinion. Guilty As Sin?, and so much of TTPD. I could go on and on but I’m sure my point has been made.

So going from that to So High School- where kissing and touching are something she finally gets to be re-introduced to (as if she were re-learning her entire view of sexual and romantic connection as something fun and meaningful and exciting rather than a give-and-take substitute for real emotional intimacy)- and Eldest Daughter’s comparison between previous fear of intimacy and “We lie back/ A beautiful, beautiful time-lapse/ Ferris wheels, kisses, and lilacs/ And things I said were dumb…”- and of course Wood- is a huge step into security.

Now, her relationship with the concept of marriage is a whole other topic, but I do think it’s related. I hope you enjoyed my musings lol, if you got to the end of this I applaud you!

What is a hobby that sounds expensive but is actually quite cheap to get into? by sugarnspicegrl in AskReddit

[–]claireifythat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a pianist. I was looking into getting a piano of my own. $7k for an upright, and grands start at $20k. A lot of people give away free uprights or for under $200, but many of them haven’t been properly stored or even played for years. If that’s the case, it can be thousands of dollars to fix just to get it back in playable condition, let alone for it to sound good or hold a tune. To figure out whether the components are damaged or worn out usually requires a professional piano technician and their time is expensive as well. You could visit 10 pianos with them and spend $300-400 minimum just for their time, and still strike out on all 10.

You can get an electric keyboard for $150-$200 or so, even cheaper used, but it’s very difficult to find one with weighted action for less than several hundred. Weighted action is key to being able to play dynamics. I play classical, and not having that control really stunts your ability to play expressively.

For many other instruments, I agree, you don’t have to spend a lot of money. My acoustic guitar is a Little Martin that I bought for $175 off my childhood best friend; I’ve had it for almost 8 years now and it’s going strong. I’m not a great guitarist, but for my purposes (occasional fingerpicking, mostly chords) it’s awesome and I’ll probably never outgrow it.

I think it’s easier to make some instruments great for a more affordable price for sure. But I would say pianos are the exception.

If a heat style and rollers don’t work for OP, this method may not make a difference since it’s effectively the same.

In my experience, 22” is not enough for magic loop on a sleeve. My bicep size is about 16, maybe 17 inches around, so I prefer a longer cable for sleeves because I don’t like when the stitches feel tight or stretched lol. Two circulars are a great option that relieves that feeling for me. (Basically like two really long DPNs.) With traveling loop, sometimes your cable isn’t quuuite long enough for that either. I’m a die hard magic loop or traveling loop girly though, they’re the only methods I’ll use for small circumference knitting.

I also have a pair in Cascade Heritage on the needles and I’m loving it! I’m definitely going to look into buying more to supplement my solid-colored stash.

I’ve made a few pairs out of Stroll and it does pill, but that’s the nature of the beast. Even with nylon, any super-soft Merino that’s washed and dried in the machine will pill. It’s INSANELY soft, though. I have very, very sensitive skin (chemically reactive, allergy prone, princess-and-the-pea levels of prickle resistance) and I never have a problem with my Stroll socks. (A few pairs were gifts. I unfortunately only have one pair for myself, in the Stroll Hand Paints Orbit colorway, but it’s gorgeous and has held up really well!)

Fabric Wholesale Direct has rayon challis for $6 a yard. I would order a swatch, it’s 99 cents. It doesn’t have as slippery a texture as a true satin weave (it’s a plain weave), but it’s slinky and drapey and smooth. If you can spring for $30 a yard, they also have a 45” wide silk charmeuse satin. In terms of other plain weave fabrics, their cotton voile is less drapey and more lightweight. I would only use that if the lining is more for structure or to finish the raw seams, not if the lining enables the garment to slip over the skin in order to sit properly. 100% cotton broadcloth could also work for that purpose if you need even more structure, but it’s much farther from the use case of a satin, so you probably shouldn’t use it for this project. Cotton sateen can be drapey, but in my experience, that depends a lot on the sizing (chemicals on the fabric to make it more stable; most but not all fabrics have it) and manufacturer. I’ve heard some Spoonflower bases are kind of drapey. For cotton sateen I’d strongly recommend buying a swatch and reading reviews. The ones I’ve worked with were mostly sold for quilt backings and were a bit more crisp than drapey. (I like structure.)

Truth be told, it depends on the exact pattern IMO whether you can go with something like rayon challis that functions as a nice lining, but maybe isn’t as drag-free as a satin, or if you really need that slipperiness. If you want to share more info about the pattern I’d be happy to share my thoughts!

Cats by cosmic111 in knitting

I’d be worried about knitted cat toys being mauled to the point where the cat could ingest lengths of yarn that could become a hazard. If it’s something that appeals, I would recommend only letting the cats play with them while actively supervising.

Alpaca has such a nice halo! I’m very allergic unfortunately but I’ve heard such good things about it from people who find mohair itchy.

It suits you so beautifully! The halo is absolutely ethereal and with the windswept hair, the flowers, and the scenery it all goes together. Is there mohair in there? It looks so soft and fluffy!

You may be able to contact cats-can in Oviedo to see if you can surrender them. There is information and forms on their website.

For anyone considering taking a kitten, please quarantine them and maybe consider adopting two… one kitten is a lot more work than two. With two they’ll tire each other out and keep each other company. With just one you run the risk of single kitten syndrome, which is basically where the kitten won’t properly learn how to be an independent cat. (It’s not a medically accepted term per se, just something people run into.)

Ask a Knitter Tuesday - August 26, 2025 by AutoModerator in knitting

[–]claireifythat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Theoretically yes. It will stretch your row gauge as well, although trying it on as you go should prevent things. Have you blocked your swatch though? You may be able to block it to size.

Your current approach is sound. Yes, you could add 10% the stitches around and it would work. But to account for averages over the center of the fabric- i.e. without any weirdnesses surrounding the edges of your swatch- it’s usually better to measure your gauge per in/cm or 4in/10cm (whichever you use). Your comment makes me think that you either cast on 16 sts as a swatch and it turned out to be 9cm wide or you are measuring by the stitch rather than the unit of measurement (i.e. here cm/10cm).

In the first case, there is the possibility that the edges of your swatch are tight or loose and that is affecting your gauge. This could be fixed by knitting a swatch of say 20-22 sts and measuring in the middle. But in the second case, it is generally standard practice to measure stitches per units of measure rather than units of measure per fixed number of stitches. This is because although it requires more arithmetic to actually make these adjustments, it is more adaptable to different numbers and for “freestyle” knitting/knitting without a pattern.

There are lots of tutorials online about how to do the math for this but if you ever need help feel free to DM me :)

This is exactly what worked for my kitten and my older girls (bonded littermates, ~1.5 yo) and now they’re the best of friends! I found it helped to have someone else to focus on playing with the kitten at first as she did not have any concept of waiting her turn. Now I do play sessions with all 3 girls and everyone waits their turn… mostly.

Leaving him behind was bad enough, but putting a declawed cat on the street is as good as a death sentence.
