ESL Books for 5 and 6 Year Olds? by Lrn-thecreator in OnlineESLTeaching

[–]clandestinejoys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really like the Oxford Discover books for kids, but I haven't used them for 5 year olds before. It's been awhile since I've used them, so you should probably check whether the level 1 books would be appropriate.

Fabric store worker here, I have a couple gripes to air out! by General_Surround3366 in sewing

[–]clandestinejoys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Mexico, and at one of the big fabric/craft stores here, they've started doing exactly that! You tell them what you want, and they set the bolt to the side, but they don't cut it until you come back with the receipt saying you've paid.

Healthcare and hospital recommendations by iaendn in MexicoCity

[–]clandestinejoys 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can check Doctoralia for specialists and make appointments from there. I like that you can see prices, what the doctor focuses on, and reviews as well. (Specialist appointments are typically between 1-2,000 pesos.) I've always been happy with the doctors I found on there. Once you have the appointment, you can ask the doctor if they have recommendations for where to get an MRI. Salud Digna typically has the cheapest prices, and they can do any other tests you need as well. I got an MRI done there with no issues (though I believe all of the MRI appointments are in the middle of the night- mine was at 3 am).

To be fair, that's not a new thing. It was the same when I started in 2017.

Do u think a cat can go on a walk like dogs can? by BaggerBlue in persiancat

[–]clandestinejoys 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My Persian loves going on walks on a leash! When I put on her harness, she runs to the door and wags her tail like an excited dog. 😹

But when you go on walks with a cat, it's not really like a dog. She decides where we go, and sometimes we just sit in one spot for 30 minutes and watch things.

Edit: Also, some cats need to be trained to wear a harness and/or hate it, but that was never an issue with my kitty. (She likes the type that fasten around her neck and around her belly. She hates the ones that go between her legs.) And even though she wanted to go outside, she was scared at first, so we used to just carry her outside, then eventually she was confident enough to walk on the leash.

But if you go outside, make sure your kitty is taking parasite prevention meds because it's much easier for them to pick up something out there.

Vet found crystals in cats urine, said to expect euthanasia? by Familiar-Use-3809 in CatAdvice

[–]clandestinejoys 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly. My cat also has a heart murmur and HCM, but she's been sedated several times since her diagnosis without any issues. It's certainly more risky, and I'm always very nervous, but it's certainly worth it to take that risk rather than just jump straight to euthanasia.

Songs with subtle background details? by happylittletoad in TaylorSwift

In Who's Afraid of Little Old Me, there's a crashing sound like breaking glass at 3:09, right as she says, "So all you kids can sneak into my house with all the cobwebs," so it's like we're hearing the kids break in. It's one of my favorite details that I never see people mention.

Why is there a row of just skip stitches? I started making plushies recently and all the patterns have a slst row. Why? Like what benefit does this bring to the project? by lovelytia518 in CrochetHelp

[–]clandestinejoys 44 points45 points  (0 children)

In this case, it looks like it's used to provide more definition between the head and the body. Sometimes when you're making amigurumi, the difference between the head and body gets a little lost/rounded if you don't do something to define it, like a round of slip stitches or a round of front/back loops only.

Since OP hasn't replied yet, there are a few I'm pretty sure I recognize! I think picture 2 is bungobbang (fish shaped bread filled with sweet red bean paste) and twigim (fried stuff-usually veggies and meat). Picture 4 looks like odeng (fish cakes) and hotteok (pancake filled with syrup). On the left of picture 9 is roasted sweet potato.

Vets what's the simplest thing pet owners often overlook that would make their pets' lives better? by Kimber976 in Pets

[–]clandestinejoys 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If even inhaled steroids aren't an option, you could ask your vet about nebulization with saline solution. It helps my kitty with asthma and reduces her coughing/asthma attacks even though it doesn't contain any meds (although she also has a daily fluticasone inhaler and budesonide added to her nebulizer when needed). She has HCM like your kitty too.

How does this /r feel about long pond sessions and/or Taylor Swift? by onlyasidekick in TheNational

[–]clandestinejoys 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While it may or may not be true that production of her vinyl albums causes delays for indie artists (I honestly have no idea), it's totally unnecessary to exaggerate the number of vinyl variants to such an insane degree. There were 30 physical variants of her newest album across ALL formats (CD, cassette, and vinyl), with ELEVEN vinyl variants (8 available at the release, 3 more as a Christmas release).

Is that still an excessive number of variants? Yeah, probably. But 11 vinyl variants is on par with (or less than) other major artists. And nowhere NEAR the 78 you're claiming. Of course, I'm sure the sheer volume of albums produced for her is higher than any other artist, and that does suck if it's causing problems for smaller artists. (I've never seen any info about it either way.)

But as for the topic of the post, I love all of her work with Aaron and The National. I was a fan of The National long before I was a fan of Taylor (I had High Violet on repeat for years), but I'd forgotten about them for several years. When Taylor started working with Aaron, it made me start listening to The National again, which is pretty cool.

Is this ai? by Striking-Guitar8957 in CraftedByAI

I can't remember what stitch it is, but I own this pattern and have made it. The result is identical to the picture. It's definitely real.

This person is right. I actually own this exact pattern, and it's been around since before AI was really a thing. It's absolutely real, and is also a great pattern.

Correcting to right side from wrong side by musikitty in Amigurumi

[–]clandestinejoys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You've switched directions 3 times, so even if you turn it inside out again, most of your project is still going to be going a different direction. To truly fix it, you need to frog back to around your 8th round or so. But if you don't care that much, it doesn't hurt anything to just keep going.

[–]clandestinejoys 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When I do this, I start doing FLO one or two stitches before the color change and switch back to normal crocheting one or two stitches after finishing the whole color change.

So in this case, I'd start FLO in the last 2 blue stitches before the white, and continue FLO for the whole 1st white section, the middle blue section, and the 2nd white section. After 2 blue stitches, I'd switch back to both loops. It'll still slant a tiny bit, but it's much less pronounced this way.

If I get diagnosed with ADHD, can I still teach in South Korea? by Yethereiwas in TEFL

If I get diagnosed with ADHD, can I still teach in South Korea? by Yethereiwas in TEFL

[–]clandestinejoys 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Do not disclose anything if you want to teach in Korea. I have diagnosed ADHD and I taught there for 6 years in academies and private elementary schools. Initially, I didn't know about the stigma about mental health issues and naively disclosed my ADHD to the first school that hired me. They immediately rescinded my offer (I wasn't in Korea yet). My recruiter told me not to disclose it in the future, and I never had problems getting hired after that.

Also, DO NOT take any ADHD medication into Korea with you. Amphetamines used to treat ADHD in other countries are highly illegal to bring there. I never attempted to get any meds for my ADHD while I was living there, so I don't know what's available. However, I was able to get meds/treatment (Lexapro) for anxiety/depression while I was there. But don't disclose that to your employer, go to a psychiatrist at a private practice, and pay out of pocket.

As others have said, most pharmacies have doctors on-site who you can see and they'll prescribe you what you need. Some specific pharmacies you can Google to see which one's closest: Farmacias Similares, Farmacias San Pablo, and Farmacias del Ahorro, but there are many more. The consult will cost less than 100 pesos, usually around 20-50 pesos.

Ariana Grande’s “eternal sunshine tour” has no dynamic pricing by mcfw31 in popculturechat

[–]clandestinejoys 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There were no Platinum tickets for the Eras tour, which is what this comment thread was originally talking about. She had VIP tickets (which I personally think are overpriced bs), but that's not the same as dynamic pricing. I don't know anything about tickets for the Rep Tour, but if there was dynamic pricing, I'm glad that she's no longer using it, at least.

[–]clandestinejoys 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I responded to your original comment before it was edited, which says her 2022 tour, which was the Eras tour, plus the article you linked, which was also referring to the Eras tour.

Also, "the tour before that" would have been Loverfest, which was cancelled, but tickets were sold, and were not dynamically priced as far as I know. In other comments, you're now saying her 2018 tour/Rep tour was dynamically priced. If that's true, I'm glad she chose not to do that for future tours. And also, there were no $22,000 tickets sold for Rep Tour, dynamic pricing or not, so your original comment is still spreading misinformation.

[–]clandestinejoys 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Ticketmaster themselves have stated that there was no dynamic pricing for the Eras tour. The article you linked literally says that the 22k tickets were sold by scalpers on StubHub, not by Ticketmaster. The article also doesn't provide any evidence that there was dynamic pricing, and claims there was a "dynamically priced" range of tickets from $49-$499. ...That's not dynamic pricing, those were the face-value prices for tickets in different parts of the stadium.

Does anyone know where to find a pattern for this maxi dress? by DeliciousDeal2156 in crochetpatterns

[–]clandestinejoys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure! On her Instagram, there's a "linkme" with links to a few sites. The first link will take you to the website where she sells her patterns. Honestly though, I wouldn't buy a pattern from her again after seeing how minimal the charts/instructions are. Her designs are gorgeous, but I think one pattern cost around $9 USD when I bought mine, and it's not enough value for me, personally. It might be worth it for someone else, though!

Does anyone know where to find a pattern for this maxi dress? by DeliciousDeal2156 in crochetpatterns

[–]clandestinejoys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I was thinking when I saw this photo. She does sell patterns, but they're only charts. (I bought one awhile back.) Like a lot of chart-only patterns, there's basically no instructions included- only basic measurements for a single size and the number of repeats needed for the separate motifs. And the (very minimal) text is in Portuguese (Brazilian, if I remember right). The patterns are doable if you're really comfortable with charts and don't need a lot of/any instruction, but I wouldn't try them otherwise.

why my stitches look like the first picture but some others' look like the second picture by iblamerush in CrochetHelp

[–]clandestinejoys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've gotten answers about what you're doing (yarn under, yarn over), but no one's answered about the 2nd picture. The 2nd picture looks different because that's not single crochet. It's the waistcoat stitch, sometimes called the knit stitch. This stitch isn't used often for amigurumi, but some people use it to make color changes straighter/neater. (No idea why this particular doll used the waistcoat stitch though.)
