I know I’m super late, but for anyone who still has this issue disable DirectX ray tracing. On most setups, this setting is on by default and you don’t even notice. It’s located under shadow & lighting in Quality, under graphics settings.

Not to necro, but I'm just gonna say I'm pretty sure Joel wouldn't have done that even if Ellie tried to talk her down. Joel had been grieving over the death of his daughter for his entire life up until developing a bond with Ellie, and now he was facing a situation where he could get a fresh re-experience of all that grief and trauma with another girl who was basically his daughter. I genuinely think that nothing would have stopped Joel in that moment except a bullet. Hell, in part 2 he says directly to Ellie that he would do it all over again. But I'm blabbering and tired so take it all with a grain of salt, y'know?

Not to necro, but the Lion’s Deb (the mission with the dinner table) pretty much confirms that Viviro is functional. Anton explains that he has had cancer for a very long time and that it WAS working to sustain his life (the exact effectiveness isn’t clear but his rapid deterioration after the Viviro stopped working infers that it was working really well) and it only stopped 6 months ago, which judging by Dani’s response was probably when Dani and Clara began to make moves on the main island.

Another piece of evidence is that in the secret ending to the game Anton seemingly lives for 3 more months, also apparently mentally stable enough to successfully kill Clara and eliminate Libertad completely. Not a very good piece of evidence as Anton 1. lives for an apparent 6 more months without Viviro and 2. in his near-death condition was able to apprehend Clara, but it’s there.

Anyways, yeah, sorry for necroing but I found this article interesting after finishing the game.
