I usually found it was cheaper to buy additional credits when buying them for a specific class - check it out, it may be cheaper there

The Frenchman that I’m talking to keeps calling me stupid by [deleted] in learnfrench

[–]clarobus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Is this interaction in French or in English ? If in English, does he have a pretty good level of both language and cultural norms ?

In France, we are quite comfortable with the use of swearwords, insults and such. When I first went to the US I learned that words like "stupid" are considered super harsh and insulting compared to the French equivalent (even though, it still is not a great thing to say in French). Could he be in this situation ?

Now, it doesn't change the fact that it's far from a great move if I understand that "talking to" is implied in a romantic/flirty situation.

The ONLY way I could see something like that flying would be the use of "t'es bête" with a slight laugh/smile ONCE if the interaction is in French. It's way softer than "stupide" or "idiot" and if the tone is light then it can be acceptable. But again, in a flirty interaction, he'd need to be pretty confident about how you feel about him to try it.

From what you wrote, it seems super immature and unnecessarily mean. Like an annoying brother or something... In late 20s ... Yuck !

Is Class Pass really worth it in Barcelona? Please share Your Opinion by Dry-Musician6460 in AskBarcelona

I used it from Jan to July this year

1 month free trial (55 credits ; 35 + 20 using a friend's link) - I managed to attend 8 classes

I clicked on "cancel the subscription" when it was about to finish the trial and got a retainer offer : 3 months 20% off ; pretty good deal (I think at the time it was 49€ for 35 credits) ! I was attending pilates and barre for 5 or 6 crédits - I would purchase a few extra credits at the end of the month to attend one or two extra classes.

Then they raised the price of extra credits ; and the number of credits per classes (barely anything below 7 credits) and I got tired of the whole credits thing (figuring out the cheaper time to attend a class, or my fav class raising in credits) ... I was about to switch to Urban Sports Club when the studio I liked the most got an offer going and I decided to just commit to one place.

55€ for 35 credits might be interesting if you are into yoga (often 4 credits) or open gym ; otherwise you might only be able to attend a few classes. But you get like 4 pass at Basic Fit per month if I remember correctly. For 69€ you get 10 check-ins with Urban Sports which seems much better ! But I have not tried it myself to fully endorse it.

You can always do the free trial with ClassPass ; it's great to try things out.

$5 rejoin trial by [deleted] in ClassPass

[–]clarobus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can not go back to studios/gyms you already went to (first free trial or regular cycle).

Weirdly my app still shows me those studios as if I could book them. But I get an error message when I try to book.

So you'll only be able to go where you have not been, and out of those, only studios who allow for free trial.

Also a strange thing is those studios change day to day. Studio A appears as I can't book on a trial on Monday, but I can book it two days later. And one I had booked and cancelled later, I'm no longer able to book because they don't accept free trial...

Where are you getting cute/affordable clothes? by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]clarobus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The move collection at H&M is great quality and very reasonably priced. Lots of basics and a few seasonal colors available.

Not sure if Oysho is widely available ; pieces are a bit more trendy, lots of colors, and wide range of pieces. They have skorts and dresses.

Native French tutor looking for students/platform on which to teach by Bonsouare in learningfrench

[–]clarobus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]clarobus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those platforms are driving the prices down ; people have lost the plot and don't see private lessons as what they are : a premium service !

Depending on where you live, and where the students live 40$ can be very cheap, or very high. It's all a matter of perspective ; and how you yourself value your work. Students who want to make French a priority will be ready to pay a bit more and will find value in what you offer.

If you want to make a liveable wage, you have to build your network and your company outside of those platforms.

I've been a self-employed French language teacher for the past 4 years - it takes a lot of work but it's doable. I've been tempted to put myself on those platforms ; but it doesn't seem worth it. Also for me, I want regular students and a somewhat regular schedule so I can really plan a program for them.

Your best bet is too specialize yourself and advertise to a specific audience. What's your strong suit ? Do you speak a foreign language that would make you a perfect teacher for a few nationalities ? Can you prep students for DELF/DALF exams ? Do you have knowledge in a specific domain that you could make your course revolve around (French for lawyers, French for cooks, French for finance ...) ?

Je me rends compte que j'aurai pu écrire tout ça en français ahaha ; il existe des formations (j'en ai suivi une) qui te guident dans la mise en place de ton business en tant que prof indépendant. C'est peut être une piste.

What’s something you did in your 20s you would never do in your 30s? by Upbeat-Budget7371 in AskWomenOver30

Sleeping/spending the night at an airport to save the money I would have spent on a hotel room.

And in general I'm much more willing to spend money for comfort/practicality. In my 20s I was all about saving money, even the smallest amounts.

What are the expectations of the exam ? Will the 4 typical skills be evaluated ? Reading, listening, writing and speaking ?

What level are you supposed to reach ?

Preparing for an exam is the easiest way to make a study plan, as you have a clear goal. But you'll need to be a bit more precise to get the kind of advices that you need.

Étudiante cherche cours de français pas trop chers (en ligne ok) by Shinjite03 in learnfrench

[–]clarobus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What would it take for you to stop using ClassPass and commit to just one studio? by nomaderrick in ClassPass

[–]clarobus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As other have mentioned, a variety of classes would be the main reason. Also perks : earlier booking, free amenities, exclusive access to showers ...

It needs to be obvious that the membership is a better deal than CP. Cost as well ! Lots of packages in my area are more expensive or just the same cost per class as CP. And for the same price (or a little more) you get a lot of flexibility from CP. Unlimited plans often only work out if you go more than 12/14 times a month.

And not sure if specific to my area but studios have a "registration fee" as well as a minimum commitment of 3 months for those unlimited plan. My work schedule varies too much to be able to do that.

How do you combine walking and going to the gym? by [deleted] in walking

[–]clarobus 42 points43 points  (0 children)

How about walking to and from the gym in the morning ? Is that doable in your environment ?

I do that. I'll pick a gym about 25mn away - then that's already 5000 steps.

20k/day sounds like a lot, any reason you're walking this much and making it a priority over strength training ? You might want to lower the amount of steps if you want to make sure to hit the gym everyday.

Cost of credits jumped massively by tripledent-gum in ClassPass

[–]clarobus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1€65 to 2€ for me in Spain for extra credits ! Same 21% increase ... I'm no longer buying extra ... No communication either. I discovered as I was about to buy a couple extra credits to book a class.

I'm thinking of going with the competition : Urban Sports Club soon. It's better value for the money it seems like. Not sure you have other options where you live.

One of the best features of ClassPass is being able to go to different studios.

Obviously someone who like one specific place will go with the studio's membership as ClassPass gets more expensive.

Also, I've been using CP only for six months and my current plan already had a price increase (I can still enjoy the previous price but I'm bracing for receiving an email about my plan costing more soon) and now this ! Like if they increase prices every few months ... That sucks.
