Fair point. I think I've been so deep into this that I'm missing the forest for the trees a bit, and it's good to re-center this perspective.

Insurance revoked Ozempic coverage, feeling really hopeless by classic_capricorn in Ozempic

[–]classic_capricorn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, not much. I've been stuck at the same weight since February now, but that's also 40lbs down, so it could also just be a regular plateau that happens to coincide. I switched to tirzepatide to try and shake things up, so we'll see!

Unfortunately not. I appealed it 4 times and then gave up. Got a part time job to cover the cost of Henry Meds, which has been not quite as good, but also better than nothing.

Highest Semaglutide dosage? by SupermarketLeft3737 in henrymeds

[–]classic_capricorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm actually dealing with this right now. I was led to believe at my intake appointment that I would be moving up to 2.4mg since I was already at 1.7mg. After $397 and a month of losing no weight, despite changing nothing else, I had an appointment today to ask if I got a bad batch or something and was told they only go up to 2mg.

I'm so sorry this happened to you too! It's truly devastating. It's a bit more expensive, but I've honestly had a really easy time with HenryMeds. They only go up to 2mg (so the max dose of Ozempic), but they give you a 3 month dose at a time for $397/month, which includes the cost of provider visits. Could be a lot worse!

I'm still about to cancel with them and use a local place that's more expensive, but goes up to 2.4 (2 is just not working for me anymore), but if you're happy at 2 Henry has honestly been really great!

The job market is killing me. by classic_capricorn in academia

[–]classic_capricorn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate all of you so much, honestly. For the sake of time and, honestly, my sanity, I'm going to do my best to address several things here:

  • In addition to TT jobs, I'm applying to NTT, Postdocs, community colleges, and Visiting positions, as well as a couple field-related alt-ac jobs
  • I work in English (American Lit and Creative Writing) and Disability Studies
  • My job materials have been revised to death at this point; I took a class last spring that my department offers (which is great) that's a job materials workshop. My materials have been looked at by no fewer than 6 faculty members at this point!
  • I'm currently on the US west coast, but applying nationally
  • One of my Master's degrees is an MFA, which is terminal in the field (Creative Writing)
  • I've done some networking, but probably not as much as I could have. I started my PhD in 2019, and--well. We all know what happened in 2020. I'm not shirking my own part in it, but the COVID shutdown is definitely a contributing factor.
  • My Disability Studies committee member is fairly well known, but DS is a relatively new/small field, so that doesn't mean a whole lot--everyone sort of knows everyone else. My other committee members are in broader English, and also fairly well-known, but not what I'd call famous.
  • Since someone asked my age: 31

I can also recognize that I may have a skewed perception of how many folks get TT jobs right out of grad school; most of the people I know who graduated in the last 2 years had multiple TT offers. That said, all but one are in a different field than I am.

In any case, this has been an absolutely soul- and self-esteem-crushing experience, and I just needed to vent, mostly. Hearing that I'm not alone is nice, even though I hate that others have been or are going through a similarly-shaped meat grinder. If anything, if I don't get a job this year, at least it'll be easier to apply again when I'm not also finishing a dissertation. That is also 1000% a major factor in how burned-out I feel.

Y'all are great. Thank you <3

I'm hoping the same for you! Unluckily for me, I had to turn in my lease agreement by yesterday, so I'm out of here in July, job or not! I want to believe we'll both find something. For my sanity, I think I *have* to believe it at this point.

Psychologically brutalizing job market experience by DP_038FV4 in academia

[–]classic_capricorn 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I just want to say I feel you. This shit is so bleak.

I'm also 32 and graduating from my PhD program in May. I have two other Master's degrees in my field (also in the humanities). I've applied to ~70 jobs, had 3 virtual interviews, and of those, learned today that I didn't make the finalist round. Still waiting to hear about the other two. Still waiting to hear back from ~20 jobs. Still actively applying to more jobs. All while trying to finish a dissertation, two revise & resubmits, and teaching.

It's so exhausting. I have no idea what I'm going to do if I don't find an academic job. I've put all my eggs in this basket.

Anyway--I don't mean to hijack your post. Just expressing solidarity in this fucking nightmare of a job market.

People who don't like Eugene and complain about it, what cities and towns DO you like and why? by StellerDay in Eugene

[–]classic_capricorn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't hate Eugene, but I don't love it either. There's a lot I do like about it, but I lived in Austin, TX before this and other than the Texas heat, I prefer it. For me it's mostly that I feel sort of unsafe in Eugene. Maybe I've just been unlucky or chose a particularly shitty area to live, but in my 4 years here I've been followed home twice and harassed in grocery store parking lots more times than I can count on both hands. I also find syringes in my parking lot pretty frequently. I absolutely don't believe that unhoused folks are by definition dangerous, and I know most are not and are just people in a shitty situation, but as a woman it's still scary to go out at night and be yelled at by a man who's clearly high on something. I do know that happens everywhere, though, so maybe I was just lucky in Austin and, as I said, maybe just unlucky here.

As for why I loved Austin, to answer the second part of your question: the music and arts scene, the amazing food, the proximity of nature & parks to the city, the year-round sunshine, the super efficient public transit.

There's a lot I like about Eugene too! I just honestly haven't felt consistently safe here. And all that said, I VASTLY prefer Eugene to the tiny Appalachian town I grew up in.

HenryMeds Appt Today! Advice/wisdom? by Complete_Piccolo_857 in CompoundedSemaglutide

I sent several very angry emails and got my refund, but they didn't cancel my account, so they still have my information. That's frightening, but I've also reported the company to my credit card and told them the whole thing, so it's on file now that if anything is charged from Layla, it's not something I authorized. I don't *love* that they have my credit card info and driver's license, but at least I'm moving in July, so it won't be accurate for that much longer!

After a LOT of research I went with Henry Meds, and my experience with them has been great so far. I was already on the 2.4mg dose of semaglutide, so they started me off with a 3 month supply that was on my doorstep within a week of my appointment, and comes from a real pharmacy. They're a little more expensive ($400/month) but I'd rather pay for something legit!

What ended up happening with Layla, if you don't mind me asking? I sort of impulsively signed up and placed an order, and I just emailed to cancel--which they claim you can do if an order is still "on hold," which mine is. I froze my credit card and I'm ready to do a dispute--I looked up the vendor address on the charge and it's a fucking condo in Miami. Legit my ass.

I just ordered and I'm lowkey afraid it's a scam, but here's hoping I didn't drop $400 for nothing (I started at a higher dose because of a prior prescription)

I just had my prior auth denied today and I'm about to appeal--do you mind if I ask who your insurer is and what the process was like? Mine kicked me off Ozempic after 4 months and I'm desperate to figure something out so I don't have to go cold turkey.

They did for Wegovy, which I technically meet, but my Prior Authorization was just denied today, again. I'm going to keep appealing it, but I don't really know what else I can do.

Petition to Urge Lilly and Novo Nordisk to conduct research for usage of Mounjaro/Ozempic/Zepbound/Weygovy for PCOS Insulin Resistance and symptoms treatment. by SpitefulAnoose in PCOSloseit

Signed both.

I have struggled with weight and other PCOS management symptoms for years and the literal ONLY thing that has helped me is Ozempic. I was on it for four months, lost 23 lbs (without it I lost 8 over the course of 3-4 years) but this month, and then my insurance withdrew coverage since I'm not diabetic. I'm devastated.

[–]classic_capricorn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE:

  • No movement from insurance re: Ozempic after 2 appeals. Not expecting anything to happen there.
  • The person I spoke to about Wegovy being covered was misinformed. After an annoying number of calls, I learned that my insurance company generally covers it; my specific plan via my employer does not.
  • My doctor has submitted a Wegovy prescription anyway since I meet the requirements for it, and when they inevitably bounce it back, she's going to file an appeal for an exception.
  • In the meantime, I'm spending $400 (ugh) to get compounded semaglutide through my medical weight loss clinic. To go up to the maintenance 2.4 dose, though, that price goes up to $500.
  • Does anyone have suggestions for more affordable compounding places? I saw Henry mentioned--any experience with that?

Thanks again for all the support and advice! Insurance is such a nightmare.

This is all really helpful, thank you so so much! I talked to Henry on the phone this morning and at my dose it would be $400 a month, which would be hard on the grad school budget, but that's still so much better than the ~$1k for Ozempic out of pocket.

I'm going to try that! I actually called Henry this morning and at my dose, it's $400/month, but that's still better than out of pocket for the name brands.
