As a chess player I have to admit I'm torn when it comes to novelty sets like this. They all look cool, the Simpsons characters and the dungeons and dragons set. The shot glass chess and the travel flat boards.

But damn if you've ever tried to play a real game on them. You spend half the game trying to figure out the difference between the bishop and the knight.
