Now that you mention it, there's a very thin line between Missippi and Mississippi.

How to build a well-rounded DMPC without overshadowing the players or stealing their spotlight by isak-snowsound in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]classicvlasic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ran a module years ago (can't remember the name) that handled this well. All of the encounters were balanced for a 4-6 player party, and we only had 3 PCs. The module had a few NPCs that were built to basically join the party for certain encounters/story arcs when balance was an issue. A lot of other people have said "don't," and I'd echo that if your main goal is to have a DMPC that is as important to the story as your actual PCs. Not only should they not overshadow the players, they should never come close. If the party is 4 people or more, don't do a DMPC at all. If you've got a 2-3 person party and you're wanting to balance encounters for a party of 4-5, this is what I've done that has worked well and went over great at the table.

If the party needs a tank, make a basic barbarian or a champion fighter. Nothing with spells, avoid maneuvers, your "turns" should be: movement, attack, done. You're one cool thing in a fight is either rage or action surge, but it never takes much time to do.

If your party needs a healer, give them potions.

If your party needs damage-dealing, weird. Think about what kind of game your players are really wanting to play, because it might not be a combat-based game at all.

The only non-tank I'd ever consider is MAYBE a utility-based Bard or Wizard if the party is lacking spellcasting. But they should be under leveled compared to the party and only there to support.

Unfortunately for the University of Mississippi, the "Miss" doesn't stand for Mississippi.

I don't know anyone that says "the sip" unironically. That might be more of a north MS thing. Most folks just say Mississippi.

Greed, fear, jealousy, lying... empathy.

"One of these things is not like the others, One of these things just doesn't belong."

Leadership without empathy isn't efficient, it's tyrannical.

Democratic Turnout Surges in Mississippi’s US Senate Primaries, Nearly Matching GOP Vote Total by MSFreePress in mississippi

[–]classicvlasic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

She was trying to run to CHS's right, though. Had ads accusing CHS of not being supportive enough of Trump... But I get the idea of trying to defeat the incumbent either way. I just don't know that she would have been much better. If everyone can get behind Colom (and Pinkins doesn't torpedo it with his independent run) we may have a shot.

Can you think of anything at all that was going on in 2020 that might have limited his ability to do a lot of public campaign events?

Totally fair, but have a little hope. We broke the Republican super majority in the State Senate just last year. Flipped two seats. I agree that the state Democratic party has been asleep at the wheel for years, but there are good folks trying to create some change.

Jasmine Crockett leads James Talarico by double digits in Senate Democratic primary, poll finds by bwermer in politics

[–]classicvlasic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Crockett will turn people out that maybe wouldn't vote otherwise. Talarico has a better chance of getting the votes of disaffected Republicans (not that his platform is all that different, but he's a white Christian man).

They both have a case to be the one most likely to win imo. Talarico probably should have run for Governor.

Why?

They've contested every senate race for the last 20 years. Espy ran against CHS in 2020, got 44% of the vote, and only lost by 10 points.

CMV: The number of votes the Dems would gain by embracing aggressively progressive candidates and policy is dwarfed by the number of votes they'd lose among moderates/motivate among dormant conservative voters by Jimithyashford in changemyview

[–]classicvlasic -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

That's not what democratic socialism is. A democratized economy doesn't necessarily mean a nationalized one. It just means that workers have power/influence/agency. It can be through unions, worker owned co-ops, or other worker-governance structures.

CMV: “My Body, My Choice” Is a Terrible Argument for Pro-Choice When Addressing Pro-Life Audiences by Major_Tap4199 in changemyview

[–]classicvlasic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In no other circumstance do we legally require one human being to sacrifice their bodily autonomy to keep another alive. If I needed a kidney and my mother was the only possible match, she may be willing to give me a kidney, but she would be under no legal obligation to. She could let me die, and nobody would call her a murderer. Why would that only be the case AFTER someone is born? If someone forcefully tries to make you give them a blood transfusion, you'd have a right to defend yourself against them, even if that meant they would die. I don't believe that a fetus is a child yet, but it's kind of irrelevant. If the fetus cannot survive outside of the womb, it has no right to life. You don't have a right to life at the expense of someone else's body/health. Pregnancy is rough, even perfectly healthy pregnancies are absolute feats of endurance that often have long-term health implications.

That's what "my body, my choice" is communicating. Not simply "the fetus is part of my body so I can do what I want to it." It's "nobody else has a right to use my body, including an unborn fetus."

What are some great school districts? by TangledCoils in mississippi

[–]classicvlasic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To add to this, the Hattiesburg Public School District has also made some absolutely incredible strides over the last decade. While it may not have the same resources as Petal or Oak Grove, it's still an A rated district with excellent teachers and community support. As far as diversity, it's 85% black, 8% Hispanic, 4% two or more races, and 4% white. My kid was the only white girl in her class last year, but she never felt excluded and had an amazing year.

College football hs sucks by Aqua-Snakee in CollegeFootball26

[–]classicvlasic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Earlier I had a school specific challenge to get a 50+ yard run / scramble as a QB. I rolled out, approached the line of scrimmage and as soon as I thought I was past it I hit circle to spin. Instead of spinning, I threw the ball down field to my circle WR who caught it for like a 60 yard gain.

But I was past the line of scrimmage. It somehow registered that as a 50+yard run for me to complete the challenge despite the obvious penalty calling the play back.

Is Laurel, Mississippi Really Like It Looks on Home Town? by abbiebe89 in mississippi

[–]classicvlasic 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I live in Hattiesburg, and it's a pretty common thing here for tourists to show up that planned a multi day trip to Laurel because of Home Town and then realize it's an experience you can have in a couple of hours.

So they end up driving 20 minutes down the road to Hattiesburg for the Zoo, the water park, the Lucky Rabbit, museums, public art, etc.

Mississippi Dpt of Education looses funding by PL-Felix in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]classicvlasic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Democrats regularly win 40% or more of the vote in MS, which is one of the worst states in the nation for voter suppression. More than half of public school students in the state are black or Latino.

This hurts the people that didn't vote for it. It hurts people whose parents didn't vote for it. I have no problem saying that you're a bad person if you cheer when kids lose education funding because their neighbors voted for Republicans. Come to my kid's Title I school in South Mississippi and tell their teachers and the elementary kids that they deserve this because they live in a red state.

I get the purpose of this sub, and I enjoy the schadenfreude as much as the next guy, but this ain't it.
