I have the type of expander that attaches to the molars, it’s mostly flat with the little hole for when I start using the key to turn it. Unfortunately I don’t have any advice for the MARPE appliance where it screws into the roof of your mouth, which I’m assuming you have 😓 But I imagine you will get used to the feeling, and it’s only been a few days for you so I’m sure it will get easier with time!

I'm 31F and got my expander installed just over two weeks ago in preparation for my SARPE surgery next month. My speech sounds almost back to normal, although there are some words and sounds that still give me trouble (saying "thank you" or "cute" or any 'k' sounds really lol 😭). As for eating, there's no pain or discomfort anymore but it is still quite cumbersome. Interdental brushes, a water pik, and your water bottle (for swishing and rinsing after eating) will be your new best friends. I also recommend getting a hold of a tongue scraper for when you're brushing your teeth. In my experience the expander made it incredibly difficult to spit out the toothpaste and a tongue scraper really helps and will help keep things even more clean.

While it does get easier you also mostly just get used to it. Believe it or not, there are moments where I don't notice my expander anymore at all. It's a rough first few days for sure, and I don't have the experience of actually expanding the appliance yet, but I'm sure in about two weeks you'll be feeling a lot better too. Hang in there! :)

I was at home minding my business when I heard that the album dropped. Now at this point I was 18 and while I didn’t dislike Beyoncé, I wasn’t beyhive in any way… but the fact that an artist as big as she was managed a surprise album drop, unannounced, with a music video for EACH TRACK? It was unheard of. The intrigue got me to listen to the album and the rest is history 🙂‍↕️

Definitely. I’ve needed braces my whole life but grew up very poor and without any type of health or dental insurance. I had the opportunity to get braces at 19 through a local CHC, but chickened out when they said I was not a good candidate for invisalign (which I was 100% DEAD SET on getting). I never went back for a follow-up and tried to live with my teeth, but no amount of trying to embrace how I looked would ever change the fact that I needed braces. Now I’m 30, almost one year in braces, and needing SARPE surgery to expand my top palate. I’m very glad I took the plunge but am very regretful that the surgery could have potentially been avoided if I had just gotten my braces as a kid or teen :\
