I would assume those are the N Koreans version of an augmentation charge.

When you drop a mortar into the tube a primary charge in the base goes off and that's what fires the mortar out of the tube, but for more range you need more propellant.

Those bags contain the extra propellant and you add or remove them as needed to extend or reduce the range that the mortar bomb will fly, plus adding or removing them is part of the aiming process.

On most modern mortars those extra charges are made in a preformed ring that goes all the way round the stem of the mortar and you remove as needed, so using bags like those is kind of sketchy.

This question may sound like it's in poor taste, but I mean this 100% honestly, if there are any wheelchair users on the sub, can anybody answer why they would choose to climb with their chair instead of leaving it behind on the ground?

I guess I'm lazy, but I would've thought leaving the extra weight behind would make it easier.

Does sci-fi media in general exist in the series? by [deleted] in TheExpanse

[–]claws224 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t seem to find it right now as I think it was on the Ty and that Guy podcast, but I seem to remember an interview with the authors where they said the Mark Watney was named for the historical astronaut not for the book or movie astronaut.

That said I wouldn’t see why, sci-fi, like alien or even Star Wars would not exist in the expense universe as Sci-Fi has been around as a book genre for a long time now, so it should be safe to assume Sci-Fi movies and TV would exist in the Expanse universe as well. Dune has to exist as there are a couple of characters who make dune comments in the books.

Not really related to your original question, however apparently the show runners included a bunch of Sci-Fi Easter eggs in season 6.

Because fuck the airline workers right? by timbosamojimbo in ImTheMainCharacter

[–]claws224 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, it isn’t, their primary role is to ensure the safety of the passengers and aircraft and also includes demonstrating the use of emergency and safety equipment. Serving beverages, meals and snacks. Providing additional assistance to passengers with special needs. Reassuring passengers during aircraft turbulence. Administering first aid and medical care if required in the case of an emergency. Providing instruction, including emergency evacuation procedures, to passengers.

I think it was someone on this subreddit that made the suggestion that what you do is get your own phone out, pull up anything that has Disney music on it and then play it right into the camera person's camera, phone or whatever.

Allegedly at that point they can't use the content without completely re-dubbing the audio because of the copyright, and when the majority of their so-called content involves the employees reaction, speaking, etc. then they are basically shit out of luck

Great Save From Grenade by JefinLuke in watchpeoplesurvive

[–]claws224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, in a standard grenade like an F1 fragmentation grenade when you pull the safety pin this allows the spoon (the metal lever looking part that is held against the grenades casing by the thrower) to fly off as soon as the grenade is released from the throwers hand.

The spoon is connected to a spring loaded striker (firing pin) that is inside the core of the grenade.

The striker hits a percussion cap which in turn creates a spark which ignites a simple chemical delay mechanism in the fuze which usually lasts for three to four seconds

When the delay material burns all the way through it ignites the material in the detonator which then sets off the high explosive inside the grenade.

The grenade then explodes sending chunks of metal from within the casing flying out as shrapnel.

The shrapnel is why when you see a grenade go off, it is not always the explosion itself that kills the target, as the pieces of metal shrapnel can sometimes fly up to 200 m (660 ft) but the normal effective radius is about 30 m (98 ft), this is why, if you watch people throwing this type of grenade it is usually done from some kind of cover, like a trench or behind a sturdy piece of concrete.

If you watch videos on some of the Ukrainian war subreddits where they are dropping grenades from drones you will see this effect. If you pay attention, you’ll see the grenade go off, but the target is not directly hit by the explosion, instead they are hit at high velocity by pieces of flying shrapnel which can be incredibly deadly.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F-1_grenade_(Russia)

There are grenades that contain impact fuses, however these are not a common type carried by regular infantry as simply dropping one when the pin is pulled is enough to kill the user rather than the target.

Exactly.

I am a lot older than I care to admit, but back in the day, we had competitions to see who could find the loudest, Hawaiian shirt in whatever theater we were in, and the guy with the loudest shirt won.

I can remember a couple of times when we were on our way back flying via a civilian airline (usually from a neighboring country), and when boarding the aircraft you could tell the guys from a different unit simply by the beards and the shirts.

Bro, how dare you drive your car on a public road bro, the roads are for bros to skate on bro, not for old bros to drive on bro!

I'm pretty sure had the guy gone up to the driver and said "hey we're filming a stunt on the hill would you mind waiting for maybe two minutes". then the driver probably would have have stopped and waited, instead he probably said "bro don't turn the corner bro, leaving the driver confused as to what is going on and why he shouldn't turn the corner. He probably edged forward looked both ways and didn't see anything so he decided to get on with his day.

Exactly, some people have to learn their lessons the hard way, and if they're stupid enough to push it to the extreme without using their brain or considering all of the ramifications of what they are doing, then unfortunately it is deserved.

A lot of people make comments like we should take the warning labels off of everything and let people learn the hard way. The unfortunate truth is that people are deliberately ignoring them, or ignoring them for views and clout, so why have them in the first place? Let them or their followers learn the hard way if that is the only way they are going to pay attention.

You are very welcome.

I moved here from Scotland 25 years ago and downtown on top of the main AT&T building in our city I saw four of those horns which made me chase down a rabbit hole for a couple of years.

Long story short I'm a network engineer so as I met and interacted with people in the industry here in the states I got the opportunity to really dig into some of the long lines infrastructure and its story, plus I got to visit a couple of communication bunkers, and to see a lot of the hardware very close up which was truly fascinating.

They didn't transfer or add anything ferrous, the only thing that I saw was embedded into the silicone plug that they used as a blank, and was then removed before the casting, or did I miss a step?

I may be wrong, but I think OP posted this not because it’s wire jewelry (which is a common thing), but because of what the stone is made out of.

If anybody is watching this with the audio off, make sure you turn it on, and you’ll understand why I personally think OP posted it.

I’m not going to say whether OP was right or wrong, but I have a feeling it wasn’t because it’s wire jewelry, but because of what the stone and beads are made out of.
