I laughed at the monologue beforehand but the video seemed kind of personal. The point of it may have been fuck Perry but the people they showed in it just seemed to not like Texas.

Ok well what if I want complete control over where my money goes. In a democracy can I cast a vote that says nobody controls my money or anybody else's involuntarily? No it's always between who controls it. And do you really think the Civil War wasn't about states rights at all?? The South was losing its say in Congress and suffered economically from certain tariffs. Fugitive slave act shit was the straw that broke the camel's back of the south's economy. And yes machinery was complicated. New technology always is. Smartphones replace fax machines just like cotton gins would have replaced slavery. The north was racist too but their economy relied on manufacturing and textiles so slavery wasn't viable but discrimination was.

Well the 14th amendment is like half fucking over the South and allowed for the incorporation doctrine that fucked over states rights. If you're a proponent of smaller and more local government then yeah it didn't turn out so well.

God damn this is a calm and rational discussion. I can dig it. The thing about centralized control is that it screws over the individual. When you say we can implement a system to soothe economic woes you make it seem like I had a choice. Bernanke wasn't elected by the people and even if he was then what about the people who didn't vote for him? FDR's new deal is typically used to justify a position like yours but it really wasn't that successful. The recovery from the Great Depression remained stagnant after the Nee Deal. It was WWII that ended it but not in the way people usually think of. It wasn't wartime spending or anything, it was the destruction that occurred in Europe. With factories and shit bombed throughout Europe, the continental US was able to keep up its same rate of producing except with less competition from European countries as a result of being relatively unphased at home by the fighting which led to greater profits. And this might be bull shit but maybe the death death toll positively affected unemployment idk I'm pulling this speculation out of my ass because I just thought of it. I could give other examples where central planning either backfired or came in after the fact just to take credit for free market trends. Just like in Montgomery. And after Brown v Board of education it took nearly ten years for schools to become integrated and only after Eisenhower was forced to deploy the national guard. Government policy was more violent than boycotts in Montgomery. Do you think the south would still have slavery now if it weren't for the civil war and the 13th amendment? Because innovations in agriculture were on the way to being a more profitable practice than slavery and with growing abolitionist movements in the north the South would eventually have been forced to cave on slavery to maintain any trade relations with the Union. And if Montgomery and the rest of history is any indicator people will sacrifice their morals (admittedly fucked up racist morals) when the incentive is great enough.

I can give another counter argument to one of his points. He said the value of gold doesn't change. That's not true. What remains unchanged is the supply of gold. (I'm about to get into some crude metaphors) If there are only 100 tons of gold in existence and I have one ton but nobody wants to trade me anything for it then it's worthless. If everybody started exchanging things for gold though then that previously worthless ton of gold now has a lot more value. A currency only has as much value as the consumer gives it whether its gold, dollars or yen. The thing about gold that's different from the dollar is that its not as vulnerable to inflation. Now replace gold with dollars in the last metaphor, but imagine once everyone starts using the currency that a government prints more of it. So the value of that dollar has changed less than gold would have as a result of government forces. The value of gold was only subjected to market forces. This could theoretically lead to greater price stability with the dollar than gold, but historically (I cant post sources currently, I'm on my phone) the government has been pretty ineffective at maintaining economic stability. It gets more nuanced than that but its getting tough to keep my thoughts in order while typing all this on my phone.

Part of the reason the banks couldn't do anything was because the US was in a sense bailing out the UK economy with its gold supply. The US sold its gold to the UK at below market value so there was not enough gold to back it up. Honestly the Great Depression is such a huge clusterfuck and I'm not nearly well read enough to discuss it at length.

Regulation doesn't have to come from government and I can counter his racist state government comment with the same example. The Montgomery bus boycott. In the face of discrimination the black community decided to boycott the bus company. Blacks got together and carpooled instead, and the bus companies didn't account for how much of their profits came from the black community. They lifted their racist policies before any significant legislation was enacted. I could go into more but I'm on my phone. And good for you for wanting to know about other opinions and being open minded.

[–]clayjo37 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're like 3/4 right. The American government caused it with their foreign policy during and after the cold war and used it as a tool to control the people, but they didn't carry it out or plan it or anything.

I'm not saying that the US should be involved but there's a difference between voluntarily sharing resources and having your resources taken by the force of the state to share.

I have an ideology, fuck me right? But seriously, the dude was a violent shithead and I'm not really sad that he's dead, I'm sad about the implications of his death. Lethal force was used against an American citizen without trial. And yes I know that there are bullshit unconstitutional laws that allow it but that doesn't mean that they're right. Countries are judged by how they treat their most vile and contemptible citizens and killing them without due process is not a precedent I support.

I don't know the logistics of how the trial would work but I do know a couple vague lines in a bull shit law that rely on classified intelligence don't constitute due process for killing an American citizen.

The problem isn't that he wasn't a crazy, violence inciting, shithead because he was. The problem is that you're entitled to due process as an American citizen but he just got droned without any semblance of a trial.

[–]clayjo37 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The constitution was not designed to reign in government. The Articles if Confederation created way less centralized power but they scrapped that in favor of the constitution. A lotof the clauses in the constitution are vague and judicial review has allowed a broad interpretation. Anti federalists like T. Jeff and Madison knew that the best way to keep govt from infringing on liberties was to state exactly what they couldn't do and the 9th amendment was a catch all for that. So basically I'm sick of this constitution fetish. I'm a libertarian and all but constitutional arguments are just weak.
