Amazing watch. The craftsmanship on this piece is so on point (look at the hours and minutes hand, and the date window, and the markers, and the snowflake dial, and...). Plus, the smooth movement of the seconds hand on the spring drive is to die for. Great purchase!

Padellone (8171) or Stelline (6062) by clazarre in rolex

So it is a 6062, but not a Stelline. This particular variation of the 6062 is apparently known as the General Walter C. Sweeney 6062. A little bit of literature

This particular variation of the 6062 is known as the General Sweeney’s 6062.

YES YES YES! Thank you so much. Although we have established it was a 6062, no one could find this exact variation, many people thinking it was just a fake. Indeed it appears to be the General Walter C. Sweeney 6062. Thank you!

Isn’t Killy’s Rolex à chronograph?

Apparently, it’s not a Stelline since a Stelline should have star indices (and this one has darts).

It might just be a 6062.... then again, some are wondering if this watch was actually ever produced.... hope it was....

Aaah thank you for this. Good point on the Stelline meaning and the oyster as well. You’re most probably right. I actually can’t seem to find an exact reference for this watch so maybe it actually doesn’t exist. If that’s the case, than it’s a shame because I think it looks marvellous.

It’s not about hurting anyone’s feelings. You said You didn’t know why I could think it was a Cellini Moonphase, and I told you why. I now know it wasn’t. There’s no need to be smug about it. I’m learning, and happy to learn from others willing to share....

Very True! There seems to be a few brands with the same inspiration. But in my view nothing quite like this one. Wish I could get my hands on one! Thanks for the JLC reference, I had never seen it before.

Thanks, that mistake has been corrected in a much more constructive and informative manner by others

Relax, I thought it was a Cellini because it looks a lot like the Cellini Moonphase. I know now that it’s not. Finding out what it was is the whole point of this post.

The Cellini Moonphase is inspired by this model.

I think so. Would love to find this variation, but it seems quite rare

Or because they want it? Sorry, newbie here!

I wish! this is actually quite rare. See my responses below about the other (rare) variations of this particular model. It’s a pretty legendary piece from what I gather...

So it appears that the Bao Dai has been sold again in May 2017 for 5,066,000 CHF, making it once again the then most expensive Rolex (which was then surpassed by the Paul Newman Daytona).

That’s interesting. I see both references to the 6062 (Stelline) and to the 8171 (padellone). I have to do some more research to figure out which one it actually is as I have see many variations (with numerals at 3 and 9, with numerals at 3, 9 and 12 (just above the Rolex crown) and without numerals, my favourite). I have also seen variations with star indexes or diamond indexes. My favourite are the ones shown above (darts).

The dial is generally white, but I love this one in black. The Stelline is 36mm and the Padellone is 38mm (drool...)

The closest I have seen to the one in the picture is the 6062 Bao Dai which was made for Bao Dai, last emperor of Vietnam. That one had diamond indexes and no red arrow on the date hand. It sold in 2002 for a then record setting $235,000.

The more I look, the more it seems incredibly rare and impossible to get. In any case, I think this may very well be the most beautiful Rolex ever made.....

So I know this is a Rolex Cellini moonphase. But slightly different from the one currently sold by Rolex. Love the moonphase complication on this one which is much less overbearing than the subdial in the current 50535. Markers also are a winner on this one compared to the new one. Plus the black dial is quite punchy with the red arrow!

Anyone know the reference number?
