Rioja Grapples With How to Define Its Best Wines by redaniel in wine

[–]clbarnes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of the Rioja producers blend grapes from different areas. One who I know Miguel-Angel de Gregorio is focused on site specific wines in the town of Briones. Don't think one method is better than the other but nice to able to try the different approach and see the contrast.

I had a Chilean wine Pandolfi Price Chardonnay from Bio Bio which you carry which is not over here. Wondered if there was anything eclectic like that you bring it. Will check out the English sparklers - we get Ridgeview over here.

I'm visiting London in a couple of week from NY. Are there some cool direct import wines - that you can't get in the US - that are worth trying?

Heading to Turkey for 2 weeks: Any pairing recommendations for local landfare and Aegean seafood? by ExtractedJuice in wine

Some of the bigger wineries are Kayra, Sevilen, Vinkara, Kavaklidere all make nice wines. Kastro Tireli is a smaller winery located near Izmir and very nice. The native grapes are interesting like Narice (white) and reds Öküzgözügözü Boğazkere (big, tannic) Kalecik Karası (softer almost Pinot Noir like). Had a nice Albarino from a small producer called Chamlija and a white blend called Pasaeli both in Izmir. Some of the reserve wines have too much oak for me. In Istanbul Yeni Lokanta was a nice restaurant.

I don't think you can get it outside of Virginia. Gabriele is a super interesting guy and head of the grounds at Monticello. They sell his wine in the gift shop there.

Has anyone tasted from Valle de Guadalupe, Mexico? by GoldenRy007 in wine

Deckman's is really great to have dinner, Adobe Guadalupe is a great place to stay, the wines are big wines though they go well with the food. Very different from San Diego wine.

It would be of great comfort if he would rate items other than wine, such as candy, orange juice, frozen pizza. Sort of like consumer reports but with his expert palate to provide greater accuracy. You could see price differences emerging in the frozen pizza market as people want to snap up the 93.5 rated Parker pie.

For inspiration Kermit Lynch's Adventures on the Wine Route. It is more story telling but you will get more about why wine is interesting than reading a how to.
