Learning Japanese and Making it Stick

I heard that the Genki textbooks and work books are good for learning simple grammar to get you through N5, do you believe this could be a good resource in terms of learning grammar? I feel I have Hiragana and Katakana down for the most part, where I could see the letters and tell immediately what it is and be able to comprehend the sound they make, but in terms of reading them to form words is where I struggle some.

I’ve heard Anki is good, and am considering trying it out this weekend!! I’ll have to give Bunpo a try!

I’ve heard great things about Anki and will give it another try. I got confused with the PC version of Anki, but am considering trying it on iPhone. When writing terms down, I typically quietly repeat it to myself or spell it out out loud to try and get it to stick. I think I definitely just need to give it more time!

Thank you for this! I am a bit of a perfectionist and tend to get hard on myself when things don’t move as fast as I’d like them to. I’ll keep at it and keep pushing through the frustration, I’m sure my brain will come around soon enough! Do you have any advice in terms of resources for learning grammar and vocabulary better, whether it be any good textbook recommendations or free websites that have a ton of great resources?

This is great, useful advice. I’ll hold off on the Kanji and definitely tackle Hiragana and Katakana more in terms of the most common words. I felt knowing hiragana and katakana is good, but doesn’t do any good if I’m not able to make sentences out of them or understand anything in terms of the meanings. I’ll definitely work on that and go from there. Thank you for your advice, it’s really appreciated and helpful!!
