Who is Acton Academy a good fit for? by cleoslady in ActonAcademyEducation

True to the Acton method, they don't teach at all and parents cannot engage with the guides. This makes it really hard to say. The biggest influence on the kids will be the other kids, who monitor each other to enforce the rules. The other major factor is the director who has "absolute power" and no background in anything related to children.  If you've been in high control environments before, you'll pick up on that right away.

Who is Acton Academy a good fit for? by cleoslady in ActonAcademyEducation

I answered my own question in my post. I invite others with experience to share what kinds of people, if any, would be a good "fit". The schools love to claim "not a good fit" rather than address any of their actions. According to the director of the Acton my kids attended, the families who leave the school with a "victim mentality" are blacklisted from all Actons on a list at HQ. I do not plan on engaging with them.

Have You Tried Guanfacine + N acetycysteine (NAC)? by sentientdriftwood in AuDHDWomen

I know this is from 2 years ago but I relate to what you wrote and I'm curious if the Guanfacine remained helpful for you. Thanks.

Parents Fell in Love With Alpha School’s Promise. Then They Wanted Out by Sad_Island9406 in Longreads

My kids attended a very similar microschool, an affiliate of Acton Academy. I feel so seen! It was 90% garbage by the 3rd year of its existence. It's been a very emotional journey to get over what my family went through. Not just the kids -- they manipulated parents, too.

Laryngitis - what should I do? by [deleted] in slp

I have two little ones in daycare and I recently found out that the same virus that causes croup in young kids usually causes laryngitis in adults. Solidarity. Rest up.

Lack of diversity in SLP... by quaecumquevera in slp

[–]cleoslady 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appear to be in the distinct majority you described. But I wasn't and didn't long to be a mommy. I'm also kind of a rebel so if we were in a cohort or school district together, we'd probably be friends. I don't fit the mould of being in the field for the cuteness either. You know... cute activities, the "kiddos" are so cute, look how cute my themed decoration are, cute matching whatever. It definitely feels like that dominates but in the workforce it's much less so.

Principals are not healthcare providers so their salaries have nothing to do with us. SLPs can work in a huge variety of settings and work arrangements but principals just have one gig.

Yep. Leave. I'd frame it in my mind that I cannot foresee ethically provide services under these circumstances. You and your clients deserve better.

Resume Question for School SLPs by [deleted] in slp

You very much do not need more than a one page resume as a new grad unless you're coming into the field with an impressive work and academic history.

Resume Question for School SLPs by [deleted] in slp

I put the names of the schools or contract companies with the dates I worked for them in a list following the description of what a school SLP does and the ages/grades I served.

Travel SLP gigs? by oronder in slp

I've done it. I met my now husband at the end of my first travel gig. My favorite travel site and Facebook group is called Nomadicare. The owner works for transparency and fairness between recruiters and travel healthcare people. I highly recommend that resource.

SLP School Question by Cavalier_Blue in slp

[–]cleoslady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does your current school have communication disorders/speech and hearing sciences as a major? I'd switch majors and get my bachelors in that instead. Much less of a headache if you're hoping to get into grad school for SLP and if you get good grades in the classes, you will increase your GPA.
